Wipeout has been an iconic series since the launch of PlayStation itself. Appearing on nearly every PlayStation console and handheld, it brought in a new type of racer to the genre but has Sony moved on from the long running series? Could this be the end of Wipeout?

BallisticNG is the spiritual successor to the first 3 Wipeouts. It has the option for an immersive cockpit view and a VR mode. Well worth checking out.

Unfortunately it uses the Wipeout/W2097/W3 physics, not the Pure/Pulse/HD/2048 physics that Omega Collection uses.

@@thegambler9994 There is a mode which can allow you to play with the HD physics. You can enable it by going into the main menu, going into cheats under the extras section and changing the physics mode to 2280 mode.

They better come back. One of my all time favorite racing games that didn't use real cars. Wipeout has always been very immersive for me. I always wished I could Teleport into the game and live in the wipeout universe

Studio Liverpool is long gone unfortunately. BNG is the closest thing we have on replicating the WipeOut physics, both old and new.

One small correction: Wipeout 64 was not the first Wipeout featuring analog controls. Wipeout supported analog controls from its very start on the PlayStation via Namco's NeGcon and racing wheels in general.

@@squills1 Probably not officially, since the controller came out after Wipeout was released (not sure about the second though). But IIRC the 3D controller was detected as a wheel in older games that had wheel support. So, if Wipeout had wheel support, you could use the 3D controller there as well.

SONY told Studio Liverpool AG Racers weren't popular after HD was released, and there were to be no more [must mean USA, as it has always been popular in Europe], but then SONY released the VITA, and told them to make 2048 for it. The Omega packed surprised everyone. Historically SONY has always used Wipeout to demo their new technology, don't be surprised if the same happens with the VR2 release, probably under SONY XDEV with a good deal of help from Firesprite studio, which SONY bought, and was started by the two former heads of Psygnosis/Studio liverpool.

WipOut was my first game on ps1. Love this series and its music which got me into Orbital and Leftfield. A new next gen only WipOut would be so awesome, also would love to see a new Extreme-G racing game.

Wipeout Fusion has been retconned out of the canon somewhat, with the wierd feel and edgy vibe of the game having an in-universe explaination, thst being corporate meddling and corruption. (Look up the lore for the Wipeout series. Its very fascinating. Temtesh Bay is very infamous in the lore of the series).

I must be so out of touch. I enjoyed Wipeout Fusion so much. Grew up on the original games and thoroughly enjoyed those too, but the upgrade paths on Fusion just ticked all the boxes for me. Stopped playing after Wipeout Pure, then picked up the Omega collection. Been playing that ever since. WipEout won't die, it'll come back some day.

FACTS, i remember taking my friends game and cuz he didn’t play it and I played that game over GT3 for time cuz I was hooked, I played all the others before that and it didn’t feel the same as fusion, it had complex tracks, it was the only wipeout with visuals damage and a repair pit zone too

I mean, at least Sony actually gave you a remake of your best titles. We F-Zero fans got nothing from Nintendo for over twenty years after GX, and then a 99 style Battle Royale based on the original SNES game (which, to be fair, is a lot of fun, but not really what we were wanting). But what really annoys me is that, with games like BalisticNG and Redout 2 on the WipeOut side of AG racing gameplay, and Aero GPX and XF: eXtreme Formula on the F-Zero side, and with the general renaissance the AG racing genre is having, the originators of the genre are completely ignoring all of that and claiming "there's no interest", "no one would buy it", etc. and only producing half-assed "appeasement" titles. It's almost like Sony and Nintendo specifically _want_ the AG racing genre to die off, as though there's something about it they're either afraid of or hate.

this might sound like heresy, but for me, Fusion is the best of the original four games. I even like it better than Pure and Pulse. its soundtrack is second only to Wipeout 3 imo. it even introduced Zone mode which became a staple of the franchise ever since (and which I'm sure most who never played it credit Pure for). I know getting rid of the speed classes was controversial, but the customisation options that were available more than made up for it. it made you feel like you were progressing in a competitive world of futuristic racing. I agree that G-Tech was an ugly ship, but that's about the only real criticism I have of the game. its reputation as the black sheep of the saga really doesn't do it justice.

WipEout fusion is actually really fun, having a fighting component and not necessarily focusing on the race all the time is rather refreshing, it doesn't feel the same as eliminator but it's unique on it's own way and I kind of get why it got that reputation, but there is no denying that it's fun

I’m actually kind of glad Wipeout had been laid to rest for a while. I’d rather see it remain loved and enjoyed by a cult following than revived and turned into a live service cash grab. We all know Sony would do it, and we all know that the game’s formula could be translated to a live service setting very easily. Wipeout should show people that it is more or less the goal to master the game so you can play at Phantom or Rapier. It’s a totally different game then on Venom speed. And even reviewers show pretty slow and crappy footage.

I really loved how drifty Wipeout felt compared to F-Zero, and how you could pitch up and down a little like an aircraft. It gave the game a feeling of realism. You had to really master the tracks with each team, and understand when and how to pull every turn. But once you did that, the sense of flow you would get is something no other game has ever achieved. But Pulse made the ships a lot more twitchy, and the magnetic tracks just felt too much like Extreme G. Locking to a track and travelling vertically for 50 storeys is just not Wipeout. And 2048 really lost what made Wipeout feel like Wipeout.

Regarding the magnetic track sections, I think a light hand with them would have been really smart. There were a few places where they allowed for track patterns that weren't otherwise possible, and that was really neat to see. The issue I have with them is that they often got used in places where they didn't add interesting variety to a track and felt more like they were there because the designer wanted to put *something* in a straight. There are several tracks in Pulse that have magnetic whoop-de-doos. Why? It's a straight line and the magnetic track removes the player's agency to try for roll boosts on them.

turn wipeout 2048 into full two games - thats what made me sad. I disliked the dlc at first. It did grew on me but I wanted tracks for 2048 not a new game within a game
