The thing about mixers and bottled cocktails I’ve never understood is it’s always the easiest drinks with easily available ingredients like the whiskey sour, margarita and for some reason a Moscow Mule. Like I’m pretty sure people have limes, sugar and lemons around anyways. I’d understand (not approve though) of more intricate cocktails like Zombies and other tiki drinks.
@pl95104 жыл бұрын
yeah, I agree. tho the reason is that those are the most famous ones. People who know of more complex cocktails do not want this premade stuff
@dylanvickers79534 жыл бұрын
i know a lot of people who are the type of people that "always order mules" or "loves mojitos" but don't really tend to drink much and these are the exact person these mixers cater too because they have no idea how simple their drink would be to make, all they know is it costs $8 and it tastes good. These people see "just add alcohol" and that level of "pour some liquor into a mixer" is a comfortable thing because most everybody has had a whisky coke or a vodka cranberry, so poring liquor into a beverage is about all they are willing to do.
@Mister_Phafanapolis4 жыл бұрын
These are for the type of people that order Freshly or Blue Aprons or other pre-made, ready-to-cook foods. They're trying but have low skills, low knowledge and are more willing to throw money than time/effort at the problem.

I've watched your channel for a couple years now and I have some insight into the process regarding dilution. There is usually dilution added to the taste desired by the company. But putting it on ice to add a slight chill and little extra dilution isn't a bad thing. My company @ftbcocktails is releasing a line of canned cocktails and we went through the process to develop it based on my own ratios (including the dilution from shaking). On a personal note, I love a fresh-made cocktail. I make fresh cocktails almost every night from channels like yours as well as cocktails books. However, I think there's a huge shift to convenience, and if you can get a good taste and offer convenience and portability, people want that. Also, not everyone can MAKE a good cocktail even with the right ingredients, and that's another way these products work.

Recently found the OTR Old Fashioned and Aviation useful at a BYOBooze get together where I wasn’t going to be able to make my own cocktail, but didn’t want beer. Being able to take the bottle in the cooler and pour over ice for a decent cocktail was pretty nice. For 10 bucks a bottle around here it 3 drinks at a fair price
@artirony4104 жыл бұрын
On The Rocks makes an Aviation and I think that's the only one that was a good idea because the Aviation at least contains a pretty uncommon ingredient with creme de violette that not many people would have and you'd have to really like Aviations to own a bottle of that stuff

Packing under pressure decreases the evaporation rate of the VOCs in the citrus by increasing the force pushing back at the liquid trying to boil. This is called vapor pressure. Keeping it cold helps even more. Therefore preserving all of the oils and molecules present at pressing!

On the banana thing: artificial banana flavouring dates from the time that the Gros Michel banana was the market mainstay, they all died off in the 50s thanks to a fungus called "Panama disease" and now we use the Cavendish banana. Different banana cultivars mean different flavours - much the same as different apple varieties have different flavours.

I seem to recall that Seagrams (or somebody) had a line of bottled cocktails back in the 70s. They were cocktails for two. The cap was a drinking cup, and the other portion was drunk from the bottle. They weren't very good. Also in the 70s Kahlua sold a pre-mixed Black Russian which was very good.

I've managed to find two bottled cocktails I was a fan of. Cody Road makes a pretty nice barrel-aged old fashioned and a liquor stores near where I used to live sold what they called a "Proprietary Cocktail" which was cask strength scotch that had vermouth and nut bitters added to it.

I've only ever had the OTR Old Fashioned and I am almost certain it comes pre-diluted. It claims to use Knob Creek (100 proof) but only comes in at 70 proof. Even if you assume they mix it a little sweeter (.5oz simple) that's way below where it should be sitting.

Many people said that the age of online and digital reading would kill the book and library industries. We haven't seen it happen yet. While there will be changes and challenges brought to the bartender's line of business, there's no reason to believe a drink in a disposable bottle can topple an empire built on alcoholism and sentimentality.

Curious as to how much these cost -- it seems to me that if I want an easy drink, it'd be cheaper and better to just drink a nice cider or beer *shrug* The Drinxmyth ones do seem like they could be fun to bring on a picnic. The twist and shake makes you feel like you're still doing something, lol. But otherwise, if I'm home, I'd rather just make my own cocktails. Oxidation is a given once citrus is squeezed but another big factor is that the alcohol also reacts(denatures) with juice over time and creates various cough syrup flavors. I think Drinksmith figured this one out

What about the cost using comparable spirits and fresh ingredients? Obviously the bottle of spirit would be expensive but could you make more per dollar? As an adult, I have never understood lemonade mixes. Making real lemonade is as easy as using a mix. Likewise, a real cocktail is so much better than a mix it's not even a contest, especially if you have to mix it anyway, which is probably the most onerous part of making a cocktail. Old Fashioned!? Easiest cocktail ever. Maybe "Gin & Tonic" is easier.
