I'm from Europe but have lived in Malaysia for the last 14 years under the Malaysia My Second Home programme. During my working life I travelled the entire world extensively, with the exception of South America, and there is no place I'd rather be than here. The people are extremely friendly and helpful, the food is amazing and medical care is world class and affordable. What's not to like?

Hi Noah & Monica, welcome to Malaysia. You basically hit the right breakfast, roti canai and nasi lemak. But the roti canai you tasted was for advanced people. I personally would like to suggest you to try the original version, just a simple plain roti with lentil/dhaal and curry sauce on a side. You can just order a basic roti canai (without egg) and you’ll find yourself licking your fingers off cos its sooo good. And roti canai is definitely Indian food, kinda like paratha. Next, the nasi lemak you tasted was an incomplete version. The actual nasi lemak would have sliced cucumbers, boiled eggs, rice cooked in coconut milk, sambal (the red sauce on top of the rice or on the side), some peanuts and crunchy fried anchovies, wrapped in banana leaves. You can easily find them in stalls too.. the one you ate is the simplified version. And nasi lemak is originally Malay food but it has become favourites for all races in Malaysia. Reasons why you saw so many Indians was because you were in Little India streets. We have Chinatown in Petaling Street and for Malay kinda vibe, you can visit Kampung Baru right in the middle of KL. You might encounter some people who are not able to speak in English. Just to let you know they might be immigrants from Indonesia or Bangladesh or even Nepalese or Rohingyas bcs in they all have formed a huge huge community in Malaysia. We Malaysians usually are able to speak English bcs English is a compulsory subject in primary and secondary schools and we even have lectures in English in most colleges and universities in Malaysia. I hope this helps and thanks for coming, I hope we Malaysians treat you well and may you find this little country of ours amazing 🎉

yeah I'd say Malaysian likes to add stuff/modify their food. They're very flexible with their food. So it's important to know the basic form of the food. Like for Nasi Lemak, some people would add scallops, maybe chicken, squid or fish and so on. But really the essence of Nasi Lemak is definitely the coconut rice, sambal and egg. It ain't nasi lemak without one of those. Normal and standard Nasi Lemak consists of those three with roasted peanuts as well as anchovies. Oh and also cucumbers.

The guy who shooed you away is definitely not Malaysian. He's probably from India. Many immigrants from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Burma, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia etc come to Malaysia to work. They also open small businesses. You are smack right in the middle of where most immigrants are.😊✌️

The place you went (near Masjid India) was actually full of illegal workers/foreigners (from India, Bangladesh)...they don't like to be recorded as they may be caught by the authority. Also most beggars you see on the street are not local. Local people are mostly not camera shy and friendly..If you look closely on the outfit, the looks, the language they speak, you can differentiate them easily, which one is which...Another tips, always always always BARGAIN when buying from the shops :)

In Kuala Lumpur, if you met people in shops, restaurants or on the street who are unable to speak in English and not friendly, most probably they are foreign workers (both legal and illegal). Similarly if the person didn't want to be recorded because they afraid to be deported back to their home countries.

They didn't leave the nasi. It's not sold , yet until you take it or eat it. If you asked the Chinese the sweet one is the salty sauce(condiment) AND the salty one is the sweet one. ( If you told the Chinese guy "rojak" he'ld bring you a fruit salad with a black prawn tar. If you told an Indian guy "rojak" he'ld bring you fritters topped with cuttlefish in sweet curry.) Same thing with apam balik where the Malay ,Chinese and Indian have their own versions. The shop you were in , you missed the teh tarik or the Milo ice for the lady. Roti planta (dry , crispy) or the roti cheese(with cheese). The same type of shop might come up with the kaya toast , too if you asked. Outside Kampung Baru , Malay shops display what looks like a salad bar with green condiments , half of them are free. Chinese shops may run allacart. There's no embarassment if you forget the name , just point. Or ask. Welcome to Malaysia. What he told you for breakfast the Chinese will eat for supper at 10p.m.

Welcome to Malaysia..the 'black sauce' is soy sauce, we call it Kicap here in Malaysia, its not the same as Ketchup - Tomato. The different bottle of soy sauce, maybe one is sweet soy sauce, the other one is salty soy sauce...hahhaa Also the Roti Canai Banjir (Flooded Roti Canai), is an advance level...hahaha...the guy should give you the original Roti Canai, not mixed with the dhall/curry sauce.. The pre-packed Nasi Lemak at shops like this (mamak shop - Indian Muslim shop), the sambal is normally very spicy, but you can counter that with a nice hot Teh Tarik..haha.. Happy exploring!

Roti canai.... i have no idea why it got crowned as #1 bread by that Food Atlas but as a local, roti canai is very cheap for morning food (or all day around food) and they're very flexible. you can turn the simple plain roti canai into many other recipes that elevates the taste even more. like roti telur, roti telur bawang (mixed with red onion), roti jantan (2 eggs), roti sarang burung (the famous eggs in the middle with some other condiments), roti planta (uses margerin), roti sardin (sardine) and many others. and then you have the curry/dhal/sambal that you can choose to as a side gravy.. and you can choose your adventure, mix them all, or specific gravy or mix it with sambal from nasi lemak..... ohhh yess it's so good. anyway hope you're having a great time, and gosh you are so good looking my man i envy your body. damn

Brother, I suggest not to pour any sauce into your food. Just put into the hands to taste it first, otherwise you will spoil your meal. Roti canai already taste good with curry without any sauce! Those other sauces are for noodles or hard boil eggs or for fried rice. Not everyone eats the same sauce or food combination. Btw in malay kicap is soy sauce. Tourists thought it was ketchup (which is tomato sauce).
