To be honest I'd be very happy if they just went back to the jewel case and supplied a decent booklet, like they used to. I still buy CDs and that would be my preferred packaging. I am very reluctant to buy CDs in a basic cardboard sleeve- like they used to give CDs away for free with newspapers and magazines. For me that is not acceptable. It is still a great format. I used to love vinyl but like most people I eventually moved over to CD many moons ago when the record industry wanted to kill vinyl and promote the then new CD format. I am not going back to vinyl so woud love to see the industry invest more into CDs, like they do in Japan. Not all current CD packaging is bad- like the book format you showed on your video, and many of the box sets are well presented.

I play CD's in my car, when I shower, when I clean or do dishes, etc.etc. I have multiple portable CD players and yes, they don't last forever, but if CD's are on their way out, why does Amazon, Ebay, and other stores still sell many different types of these portable cd players??? Thanks again Steve! Compact Discs aren't going anywhere, they're here to stay!!!

Yep - simple enough to do that, and it's what record collectors do to look after the cardboard sleeves of their LPs. You either look after your music purchases properly, or you don't, and a pack of clear CD sleeves is much cheaper than buying 50 x 12" record sleeves too.

Very well said. All CD's should return to jewel cases or a hardcase digipack. Too many these days are issued in a flimsy cardboard that look like a carboard CD single and no lyric sheet or photos and I stopped buying new cd's about 3 years ago just due to lack of care of presentation from the record company. All cardboard cd's show wear and tear after a few months, but a jewel case can be replaced if cracked or scratched and looks as good as the day you bought it.

These days its mainly the thrift shop BUT as a tip take a trip to the dump/tip lots of people are downsizing and their CDs are thrown out and given away free in the recycled shop area (this also applies to DVDs and BluRay). Better to rescue them than them winding up crushed in land-fill.

How about a large data disc cd/dvd/ blue ray, etc. or online downloads of final mixing board of each track split into separates. 1 track of the normal recording 2nd track just all instruments 3rd track just vocals 4th bass 5th drums...etc... and continue on with everything added....single play, accent instruments as a triangle, cowbell, gong, and chimes could be combined on one track where there is "empty air" space between. I wonder how many vocalists have the courage to try it ?.. Just one song having 10-40 separate tracks would possibly fill the limited space on a regular cd . Mo cd's, mo tracks mo money, maybe ? It would be interesting for that rumored sound story you sometimes hear about where a faint background non-instrument was used or where the lyrics switched or someone fell off their chair.....possibilities ?

I need the tangible item. I started collecting music in 1960 when I purchased my first LP through a magazine ad. Immediately hooked on collecting. '60s was LPs and singles. Then 8-tracks. Then 70s cassettes. The eighties came along with the introduction of the CDs. But early CD releases seemed to be all Classical music. Not my bag. Made the mistake of totally selling the collection. Have spent the last 12 months going from 15 CDs to 1500 CDs in an attempt to rebuild what once was. I loved vinyl because of the presentation (great album covers). But now, LPs unjustifiably are way too expensive. So, for me CDs work great. The downer is digipacks. They're cheap and no excitement. I agree 100% make a better presentation and I'll spend the extra $$ to have it.

I appreciate your enthusiasm and passion for collecting, I'm the same way, but for somebody with a channel about this stuff you really ought to know your terminology my man! The Collin James CD's are known as "Ecopacks" or "Eco Wallets". Yes, they are garbage; akin to paper straws! The Whitesnake CD is a "Double Digipack". Gabriel is a "Digipack". The Maiden is a "Mediabook". WIlliams ones are "Digibooks". I have 15,000+ CD's in my collection. I'll do a video someday about this. Hope that helps for now :)

Fully agree. At minimum I think all CDs should be released in standard cd jewel case with booklet that includes lyrics. Step up would be a slip sleeve around it. Next steps up would be well designed custom packaging. Not the cheap then stuff as you ere showing. And NEVER just a front back and slit on side for CD where there is not even room to put name on cd the spine. Those are the worst.

I remember picking up some of the metallica remasters at Walmart, they are made cheap and sold for cheap. I think they call them digisleeves. The gatefold art looks terrible because the spine protrudes out, at least they still come with booklets.

The Japanese have always done things better than anyone else as far as technology goes. Japanese Elvis vinyls are extremely collectable elsewhere - gatefold covers, lyrics to all the songs printed in both Japanese and English - who else does that?! Certain companies are re-issuing Elvis music on both CD and vinyl, and the packaging is mostly okay but sometimes leaves a lot to be desired, as you described - the CD floating freely around in a cardboard sleeve, or even worse 3 CDs laying on top of each other's edges in a so called box set

Part of the problem is that everyone has a different idea of how CDs should be packaged. I personally hate jewel cases and would much rather have a gatefold cardboard cover. In fact, I would hesitate to buy a new release CD if it were in a jewel case or something that uses too much plastic. It just seems tacky and outdated. I guess the ultimate presentation is closer to the Robbie Williams titles you've shown here. They've got the sturdiness of a jewel case but a nicer feel like a vinyl sleeve. And the glossy artwork looks great. Maybe everyone can get behind that. I like those 7" covers, too. Great idea.

Buy, now while you can pick up CDs for next to nothing... Before the turn of the decade they will be just as sought after as vinyl and the prices will be crushing on grail items. Many titles have never had vinyl releases. Niche music had limited runs even on that format. Right now certain cassettes and discs are going for triple figures. Of course packing gimmicks will have their place. But there's stuff you simply can't get unless you buy it on compact disc. Streaming just doesn't cover music on the margins. I kick myself for what I didn't scoop up when prices bottomed out on records (though I never stopped buying wax). I'm not going to make the same mistake on CDs while their worthless. For the right titles, take it to the bank on VHS, DVD etc. too. 'To have and to hold...'.

i HATE digipacks >_> the plastic holder for the Discs always comes lose after a few years because the glue, that sticks the plastic to the cardboard, dries out, becomes hard and comes lose. The perfect disc case is really the Super Jewel Case like the ones Super Audio CDs came with. Incredibly sturdy, much thicker and sturdier hinges and overall much nicer for archival purposes and lots of handling. The rounded corners also made it a lot less prone to damages, A digipack is a lot less forgiving towards wear and tear..... Also what still keeps me from buying most modern CD releases is the still omnipresent LOUDNESS WAR insanity. And i certainly won't pay 40-50 or 60 bucks for a freaking Vinyl. As much as i like Vinyl, being able to actually OWN the actual sound imprinted into a grove, without DRM, i simply cannot justify the costs. And i know how good CDs can sound if mastered properly. So i am very picky with what CDs i buy and i often check the Dr. Loudness rating for certain releases to make sure i don't get a dynamic-range reduced "rEmAStEr".

The myth of vinyl superiority needs to die, as well as the anti-digital smear campaign by hipster vinyl snobs that went along with it. The thing with the CD though is it's nothing more than a physical carrier for a digital audio file and the only real value is having your own copy that isn't stored on anyone else's server and subject to their own whims. Everyone even remotely serious about music should have possession and control of their own copies of the music they love, regardless of the storage medium whether it be a CD, a burned DVD with a hundred songs on it or an artist's entire catalog, an SD card, a SSD drive, whatever. The point should be that you have a copy that no one can take away from you or alter without your consent. The physical carrier of that digital file is not nearly so important as the fact that it is in your exclusive possession and not held hostage to some remote server host somewhere.
