Is THIS the Future of the Zelda Series?

So, first off, has Nintendo said anything about the matter? Do we have any kind of official statement, or anything? Well, we do actually. In a 2017 interview with the Japanese magazine Famitsu, series producer Eiji Aonuma, stated that: “I think that, in the future, open air games will be the standard for Zelda,” Ah, well there we have it, I guess, cue the end credits. No, but more seriously, now we know that at least, the series probably won’t completely ditch their open-world approach, and the existence of Tears of the Kingdom certainly reinforces that. And, honestly, they have good reasons to keep things that way, Breath of the Wild did become the best-selling game in the series after all. People absolutely loved all the freedom the game offered. However, for those who liked the linear Zeldas, this probably isn’t very encouraging. After all, an open-world is just one of many approaches, and one of the reasons BOTW felt so fresh was because all the previous games were so linear. If we keep getting open-worlds would we experience that same fatigue? It’s possible, but I think that there’s a pretty easy solution for this, in fact it’s been there for a long-time, and has shown itself to be alive just a couple of years ago. I’m talking about 2D Zelda. With the release of Link’s Awakening, on the Gameboy, the Zelda series had been separated into two.
