Thanks, but plenty of people can make these. Especially people that specialize in windows and doors. They have it down to a science.

Hi HB, I worked in a door factory years ago and everything was done by machines. I have made these joints in my shop and pretty much did them like you. It's trial and error I think you did a great job!!! Timothy

Thanks! The whole time I was fiddling with them I was thinking there had to be an easier way to do them. Happy to hear the process just sucks for everyone.

Looks fantastic! Cutting all those small mitre's and getting them perfect is challenge for sure! Definitely worth making a jig for! Another way would be to cut the rabbit's on the radial arm and make an angle jig and use a back saw and chisel fie the 45"s being a mahogany it would hand tool quite nicely! I know it would be frustrating making the wrong cut for sure! Awesome job Honey!

Thanks! The first time I made these I used a hand saw with a 45 jig and I don’t think my hand sawing skills were good enough for that then. But, I wouldn’t mind another go at it now.

Definitely a complicated joint requiring close attention to setup and a fair bit of planning to make the necessary jigs. I imagine a little nerve wracking making the first cut in each procedure, plus you could need several spare test pieces (at least I would need them) to make sure I was good to make the actual cuts. Nice work.

Yes, what the video does not show is all the triple checking and second guessing that went into all the cuts.

Great job on the jigs. I’ll have to call to make my sashes next time. That way I won’t have to remake jigs because I threw them away. Not going to do that again because you always make more than one.😮

Door and windows are something I will make, but I'm hoping this is my last dip into the door pond for quite a while. There is just so much math and things to consider before even building. It's a very time consuming project.

Very informative. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. You could make a lot of money if you taught classes. I know that these videos are that in essence, but I mean real hands on classes. I’m pretty sure people would pay to take them.

Being self taught doesn’t really lend me to teaching others. I think new students are best learning traditional techniques and proper methods. My way gets it done, but it’s not always the best, most efficient, or proper way to do things.

Hi HB , great job, my last 4/5 sets of doors I made like this, they were double glazed, and the units were 28 mil thick, so as you can imagine, overall thickness of the doors were very thick, but I ended up fitting one very large double glaze unit into the frame. I got the glazing company to make sure they’re done the Infill correctly and they put bars in between the sealed units. And then I intern made up mouldings that went on the inside and outside of the double glaze unit, and they were stuck on with double sided tape, Great looking job , Considering you don’t have the machinery and the tools to make things easier for you, obviously these machines and tools are very, very expensive and you need a lot of room, Well done, look forward to watching the next stage of your project,

It's a difficult joint but i think the way I did it is a little easier, i bought a router bit set that has the profile and the reverse profile.... it's still a pain to dial it in but saved a lot of time.

Just out of curiosity, why didn't you just use a huge pane of glass and do faux-muntins? Isn't that the way everyone else in the world does it? Or were you just trying to be old-school and authentic?
@HoneyBadgerWoodWorks
@HoneyBadgerWoodWorks 4 ай бұрын
From the research I did going into this, professional door builders, and the examples from both of the books I read do it the traditional way. Personally, I do not think the faux muntins make for a poor quality door. But, I do think on something like this the traditional way is the better way. It's a more structurally sound way to make this style door. While all of the joints are time consuming all the interlocking pieces are going to help prevent issues like bowing and warping over time.
