Coil split: you have 2 coils, the switch "shuts down" one of them. It leaves you with another coil active, which introduces the 60-cycle hum, and tends to sound kinda weak sometimes, since half a humbucker is not as juicy as a dedicated single coil. Coil tap: you have 1 coil, the switch goes between high and low output modes. It's done by introducing a breakpoint when winding a wire onto a coil, so by flipping a switch you either use the entirety of the wire or only a part of it. Manufacturers and players get them confused all the time, usually incorrectly calling the feature "coil tap" while it's actually a "coil split", just like in your case. Hope this makes sense.
@geirisk83 жыл бұрын
Damn dude thanks for the great explanation! I wasn't sure but this makes total sense and tells me that this guitar has coil split, not tap :D

I got this guitar because I wanted a cheap baritone... It looks very good and holds tuning really well but the pickups were microphonic and the frets were not properly leveled... It's now getting a fretjob and I got a set of Seymour Duncan black winter to go in it... Hopefully this will solve the issues since it is a great guitar overall

Oh nice that pickup upgrade is going to make a huge difference! I like the stock ones and I don't think I've had any microphonic issues with mine.

I dig that guitar, man. I think for the price it’s a good mod platform at the very least. Anyone with any experience in modding guitars wouldn’t have a problem with that. I’m one of those people lol. I can’t afford super expensive guitars so I buy decent guitars and make them badass over time😂 great video btw!

I'm just wondering when we're gonna get wonderwall in B standard. It may just be me but on your first clean playing it sounded like the pickups were kicking out a lot of high end. Either way, I think you've just convinced me to pick one up as a back up for when we can actually gig again.
@geirisk83 жыл бұрын
Hahah we'll see about the Wonderwall idea ;) Yeah when you split (it's been pointed to me that the coils are being split, not tapped) the pickups they become a lot brighter. For me it's a good thing and offers just more versatility!

I expect to make some corrections such as the nut etc., however I find it to be a great platform and price. BTW, I really like the chords you were playing at the start of your sound demo, very sweet!!! Subscribed. I have several 7 string guitars all 27" scale so no worries about that 🙂If you have a band or solo music I can check out, I'd appreciate a link to it. I like the way you play.

Damn that's beautiful, I wish it came in different colours. I was thinking of getting the standard Subzero Rogue with the trem and down-tuning(looking to do stoner as opposed to the Djenty genre people use the VI for), as far as I can tell it has the same pickups? Coil split would be nice though. This would be more ideal though.
@geirisk83 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think other colours would be a nice option! This guitar has coil splitting so that's a nice feature. I'm not sure about the other models they have.

I bought one last year, and I'm absolutely in love with it. However: It missed one of the four screws around the input, and the locking tuner was bashed and bent (but still 100% functional nonetheless) I could've probably just e-mailed their customer service but I didn't want to wait for it again... Now I've almost switched exclusively to my baritone (switching it up with my Ibanez RG walnut 7-string & Jackson dinky 8-string) Its just a blast to play and it sounds great, almost as good or at best just as good as my EMG (81's I think) on my 7 string.

It seems like all of the gear4music house brand guitars and basses have that same weird residue on them. I got one of their coliseum basses and it had that stuff all over it. Maybe the warehouse where they keep these has moisture issues?
@D20band3 жыл бұрын
I love the tele shaped guitars! Tough call between this and the Rogue. I'm thinking of picking up one soon, but don't know if I need a 30 inch scale. How low have you tuned on this one?
@BardNomad3 жыл бұрын
Commercial baritone strings for a 27" scale guitar usually get you in B standard-Drop A on the lighter end and A standard/Drop G on the heavier end. 30" scale starts you at E standard one octave lower than guitar. It's basically a bass.
@geirisk83 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply! I also have the 30" guitar from them and it's a totally different beast. This 27" is tuned to B-standard (with drop-a as option) and I like that because that gets me the feeling I had when I had a 7-string.
@D20band3 жыл бұрын

Here we are a year after your review, just after you bought the guitar. So... after one year how do you like the guitar now? Did you keep it? Did you make any modifications ? You mentioned possibly changing out the tuners
@rickjames56842 жыл бұрын
I'm so confused about tunings. At about 8:30 in the video, you mentioned the guitar is tuned the same way as E standard. So could this apply to lower tunings like drop E? I just really admire the lower tunings but it's hard for me to learn chords unless I get the regular 6 string (non baritone) out to practice. It's just so boring playing in standard. lol

A very nice, cheap guitar to customize in terms of electronics because it is unplayable. The sound is weak with a lot of feedback. Worth the price display.... a base to customize...
