When my dad (a legendary bassist) was teaching me fretless, I wanted to practice slides. But he kept telling me that fewer glissando makes them "special". I would practice them over and over after school before he came home. Then would practice intonation accuracy and exercise for an anti-buzz tightness that my little hands lacked. I always wanted more slides and the band director at school would say "no" and being in a cover band with my older brother is was also no. When I left home the JB fretless stayed with dad. I built one from a Silvertone in '77. It was years later that I realized he was right, effects, chords, solos, slides are ALL best in moderation. You reminded me of this with your solo on this video. Make the glis like the diamond among thousands of other rocks. The rest of the time play straight. I know YT is for athletic exhibitions of speed and goatness, but you probably have a smart enough audience to recognize/appreciate quality. My dad died in 2000, before 911. He wouldn't even recognize our world. But if he were here, he would certainly tell you: Make it sing with your soul, leave the gymnastics for the other guys.
@JohnnyArtPavlou2 жыл бұрын
I totally agree… I mean if you want to do a little vibrato or some thing. It’s already going to have a distinctive tone without doing those glissandos all the time. I think they get a little tiring to listen to. Less is more.

35 years ago everybody said I'm a freak because I built myself a baritone fretless from an old Kramer alu shortscale bass-neck (ex duke-bass) and diy body. Result is quite satisfying because of the alu-neck. The more tight the neck the more you get sustain and a bright sound, and thats important for the plain strings which are a bit muted by the fingertip. Nice to see that the good ideas will not die...

recently had a guitar of mine professionally defretted, and i'm not sure i'll ever be able to go back. sure, chords are harder and the sustain is a bit garbage (at least on a regular guitar, baritones might fare better in that regard), but the gain in expression and access to any microtone imaginable make it absolutely worth it in my book. currently considering getting a custom made one, just to seal the deal. in any case welcome to the fretless guitar gang !

@@arumyn3070 sure ! although i'd have to try one out before blowing that much money on an instrument. the metal fingerboard probably helps a bit, but to my understanding, the lack of sustain is mostly caused by the softness of the fingertips, so i'm not really convinced yet

This is indeed an instrument that is evolved from the 16th century. Beautiful! Also a member of the vile family which had seven tide frets and the rest of the neck was fretless. They were very delicate due to the lack of technology back then. I once took a six-string fretless bass and added lighter strings to it and use some very different tunings, some of my own and some from centuries ago. But the coolest thing was being able to run it through my rig and just getting some really cool sounds. Thank you for posting your amazing video.

A great benefit of any fretless instrument is it becomes easier to correct for the tuning issues in 12-tone equal temperament. There are also tuning issues with the standard fretted guitar (which can be solved with warped frets, called "true temperament" guitars) that this can help overcome too. Of course, it takes a lot of skill.

@RichardCummings-yo6rz9 ай бұрын
As a fretless guitar player there are a few things I wanted to add: Playing fretless guitar is not harder that fretted guitar but it takes more attention, there is a difference. If you already bend notes on guitar you already have the intonation in your ear, also if you play slide. When starting out on fretless find the harmonic nodes and play them stopped. Right aways you have lots of note that are more in tune. Use open strings and harmonics as reference tones. Altering how you play fretless is the major asset to the instrument. A more linear approach along one string creates a very lyrical quality. Re-voice chords to the essential (1 - 3 - 7 for most common chords) 3 notes are usually enough to give the harmonic intent. Barre chords and barring two strings are tricky to get both notes on pitch (add vibrato when barring). Practice vibrato along the string as with cello. There are some great vibrato videos for cello that apply well for fretless guitar. Like a fretless bass the note blooms so playing longer notes is beneficial. If you are playing electric fretless guitar and eBow helps with finding the notes because of the sustain. We can do our micro adjustments as the note continues. Try playing finger style to get a richer sound, especially on a regularly tunes guitar. Picks can sound a bit thin. With fretless guitar the notes have less overtones and the fundamental is more prominent which gives the characteristic sound.
