I 100% have to agree with you on this. The back kick, as we call it in Taekwondo. Is in my opinion, the most powerful kick to deliver. Especially if you kick slightly in an upward motion as you contact to the body. I had the experience of getting caught with a back kick, during hard sparring once. Years ago back in 2000. A jump back kick to be precise. We had full gear on including chest protectors. I had my sparring partner, backing up to a wall. Thinking I had him I moved in. He came up with the jump back kick. And caught me with it wide open. And I definitely felt it. But didn't realize how bad it was, and continued sparring. About a half hour later, when my adrenaline came down. I started having some trouble breathing. Went and got checked out. Found out I had three hairline fractures on my ribs! Keep in mind I had a chest protector on. And he didn't hit me, with all the force he could have. The jump back kick you threw at the very end, was nice by the way. Just like the one I got nailed with lol!
@MJFUYT2 жыл бұрын
That's crazy. In that, you kept on sparring. You're tough. 💯 I just had some bruised ribs & breathing was hard AF
@streetsmarttaekwondo2 жыл бұрын
@@MJFUYT well, I don't know about tough. But we used to spar pretty hard back then. And like I said, it did hurt when I got hit. But when you spar like that. Your adrenaline gets going really high. And it's not really that uncommon. To be able to absorb the pain and keep going. But, when that adrenaline comes back down. Well, LOL that's when you start noticing the pain! And in my case, the breathing problem, that came with it.

I was practicing the spinning back kick during an open mat session and had a couple guys laughing at me. I chambered a spinning back kick during sparring against one of the experienced coaches (didnt kick out just wanted to see if I could actually line up a spinning back kick) and the coach afterwards said I did a good job with it. Felt good to have a bit of redemption after being laughed at and to see this video, icing on the cake!
@leorosa2 жыл бұрын
I don't think they would be laughing. The spinning back is known mostly as the most powerful kick more or less. Standard straight up typical strikers who only do Muay Thai , might think it's too flashy maybe.
@coookalo2 жыл бұрын
@@leorosa it is a Muay Thai gym which is another reason why I didn’t actually throw the kick in the end cause most everyone is practicing Muay Thai. I’ll admit I looked a little silly teaching myself how to do it but the open mat is the only time I have to practice something like that. Your analysis is pretty spot on, I’m sure they thought it’s too flashy of a move to pull off.

I used to use a similar technique when I was fighting karate competitions I used to throw week front kicks out in an open stance until my opponent was slapping them aside 2 or 3 front kicks slapped aside then whip round with a back kick They never saw it coming and it's devastating Drops them every time even if you hit there guard it still puts them on the ground most of the time. I love watching your videos makes me want to take up training again!

Spinning or not, a Back Kick positions the Glute Maximus (strongest/densest muscle in the body, for most) for maximum involvement in the power delivery of the strike. Makes sense that it could be so damaging.

This is awesome.. Great work.. Just found you via Karate Nerd channel..When I was learning TKD my instructor made me swing a bag tied to the 20ft roof (gymnasium) as hard and as high as I could.. Then I had to stop it dead with spinning back kick with out being knocked backwards.. Then it became a game with my mates at the club, then we added running jumping spinning back kick to the equation, still with the bag swinging nearly up to the roof, that got messy, but occasionally you would nail it and the impact was like nothing I have ever seen before or after, The bag would fold in half..Taught us a lot..We all ended up with crazy good spinning back kick..One thing I found from doing it so much was the back of the heel on front foot is centre line for target.If you centreline off your toes then you will kick 6-8 inches off target.. That was my setup anyway..note in training you can spot target and kick. In flat out sparring or tournament your setup has to be right,cause the kick has to be lightning quick..Keep up great work, all the best for next fight.

This is a kick that I would love to perfect, I have a question, at the end of the video when you are performing the kick both of your feet are off the ground when making contact, you're jumping into the kick. Are you supposed to keep your left foot on the ground for added balance and to push off of for power or is the power being generated primarily from the rotation and throwing your weight with the jumping movement towards your opponent?

A tip to not have your kick go wide. Keep your knees close together as you push through. As long as your hips are lined you with the target it will travel straight in. Just make sure you keep your knee high so it doesn’t start too low.

I wonder why no one is pulling the hand or the wrist in a hand fight. Just a short to pull to distract the opponent and create a opening. Everyone is pushing or slapping it to the side but no one is giving it a quick yank. for example yank to the side body kick or high kick.

Timing, and speed. If you perfect it you can do it while jumping meaning it is less dependent on front foot position on or across the centerline. It is also faster if you sneak your foot up at a shallow angle instead of lifting it to 90 degrees. But beware of turning it into a groin hit if your timing is not perfect. :-)

@z1z2z3z4z1z22 жыл бұрын
side kick = slightly longer kick, knee comes up as you rotate, foot comes knee height, hips rotate, foot comes out when spin is completed, the foot is more horizontal, your body will end up sideways vs opponent. back kick = when you spin, kick starts when back mostly facing away from opponent, when you throw kick, you will end up kinda lean way, with back mostly facing opponent, knee comes up and kick goes out, foot comes from the ground, close to body, foot is aimed down'ish. very hard to see coming the kick coming because the foot is kinda hidden. many times the opponent will think you are "running away" will lunge in to get your back, their eyes will be up. will catch them many times with arms up reaching for you, their chest opened up.
