Appreciate your perspective on this one! I'm going to sedona in november. Very excited to check out all the amazing rock rolls there! I do want to check out the white line and maybe ride it depending on how it looks in person but no pressure!

Good timing, since Friday Fails had somebody's bike falling to the bottom of the canyon at White Line this week. There was some interesting discussion of the trial in the comments, and many folks agreeing with you that this trail isn't what MTB should aspire to.

With people always watching, there's just gotta be a way to pull off a crash test dummy off the cliff prank. C'mon Jeff..that'll make the White Line more enjoyable for you and all of us 🤣

I definitely find myself looking to show people what I can do on a bike... or really anything I've been working hard at. sometimes it makes me look dumb, sometimes not. I definitely really appreciate your view on this stuff. most people would say "oh, yeah that was me way up there" when asked by strangers who were obviously watching you but the way you say "no that's mustve been someone else" and then zip off before they can say anything else is honestly very refreshing and grounds me back on earth in a good way. we all need a bit more humility, I think, but it's very hard to get to that point where you actually just do things for yourself and nobody else. mad props to anyone with that kind of mindset. it is not easy

I appreciate your honesty and ingenuity to do something different on the White Line. I wonder if it would be as popular if it was somewhere where no one could watch??? You always make riding look so easy and fluid. Keep pumping out these kewl videos!

White Line just isn't for me. Maybe when I was 25, but at 45, job, family, mortgage.... not taking that risk. You make it look so easy.
@JCintheBCC2 жыл бұрын
I agree 100%. The fun of riding an off-camber slab of slickrock and then doing a steep rock roll doesn't justify the consequence for screwing up something like the White Line. Take away the crowds and the hype and the White Line is just a sketchy, uninteresting loop.

Absolutely agree. I find unnecessary risk the worst side of mountain biking.

Thats awesome Jeff how you called out about the Sedona White-Line. From others POV it does not look all that bad, and the off camber is not as bad as some other trails I have ridden. I am sure the grip on that red rock in Sedona is pretty tacky as well. I hope to ride out in Sedona one day in my lifetime. Cheers buddy!!

what a nice new take on the infamous white line, I wonder what other famous features and spots have a jib or line that hasn't been ironed out of them yet?
@lonelytrailsmtb81052 жыл бұрын
To me, it depends on the risk. White Line isn’t a trail I’d “risk”. Portal in Moab would probably be my max risk level. But doing something like the White Line really does show the general public what a bike is really capable of as well as the person riding it.
@TheCrookedWheel2 жыл бұрын
White line looks 100000000x easier than Portal, Ahab, or Jackson trail with way less exposure.
@lonelytrailsmtb81052 жыл бұрын
@@TheCrookedWheel unfortunately, I’ve only ridden Ahab a few times (absolutely loved riding Ahab) and I didn’t feel that trail really didn’t have that high of a consequence. The one spot of exposure is/was pretty easy to ride I thought. Portal doesn’t look that bad besides the spots they encourage the rider to walk. Also, I have yet to see a video of someone almost dying/falling from the cliff from riding any of those 3 trails.

Solving riddles rather than taking risks.* Word to the wise! This 52-yr-old mtber here concurs. *some risk is always involved; I just don't seek to constantly maximize it like some adrenaline junkies i know.

It's one those box ticked trails I guess. I've got a few impossible climbs and tight turns on my local loop which are a total buzz but no one else gets it. London to Brighton off road at night was massive fun with a beer on the beach for breakfast but that's definitely box ticked!

Not sure I’d call it the most “embarrassing” trail, but probably one of the most easily recognized lines (from all the videos). For the “average” rider, it would probably rank as one of the top “must do before I die” rides 😂

Hi Jeff, been trying to shoot some trail footage of my own to record the trails where I live before I move away. I have a chest-mounted GoPro with a Max Lens mod. What do you use to film chest-mounted footage? Obviously, shakiness is the main enemy. I've been reading about gimbals lately and I'm interested to know if that's something you use. Thanks!
@PatBK2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that! I actually kind of hate that risk-taking-craze. What's the point in riding an easy trail with the only catch, that there's a big cliff to one side? That does not make you a good rider, it's just dangerous. And it's not only the white line, there's a famous one in Madeira and several ones here in the alps. So yeah, technicality over exposure all the way.
@chrismade1232 жыл бұрын
how steep is this in degree? do you set your sag lower before doing this? that turn on the frontwheel sure is the scariest part to watch :)
@BBurton12312 жыл бұрын
Frankly, I rather watch the step downs back to Chicken point, the drop into Little Horse, or really one of the big challenges like the last steep/switch backs on Hiline. Love that section of Hiline and then Baldwin to Bhudda Beach. Let's see a tech climb up to Templeton from Bhudda! A secret singletrack connection from Mormon Lake to Munds Wagon trail! I agree that the White Line is overplayed.
@JeffKendallWeed2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Blair! The climb up Templeton is fun, but not too hard with clipless- I just got it first try on a big ride last week. On flats, I do struggle to get it first go. Climbing up Ridge is still my favorite tech climb in Sedona- but it's hard enough that I only attempt it like once per visit!
@gregcavanaugh62592 жыл бұрын
I'm think your term "publicity stunt" is an apt description (not to downplay the risk at that corner). I think my more recent problem with the MTB trends/community is that everything has to be "gnarly" and that equals risky and generally downhill. I don't know, but I've ridden the White Rim loop in one day, unsupported, several times and I'd argue pedaling for 100miles is more gnarly than riding the rock roll on the Hangover. I think Ryan Palmer's op-ed about ppl climbing on fire roads was a similar sentiment. And having checked out Bentonville recently, we're certainly curating a new generation of MTBers that think trails are normally machine built, flowy, with perfectly banked corners, and built in such a way to minimize the pain of climbing as much as possible.

Hiline in reverse?
@JeffKendallWeed2 жыл бұрын
hahahaha I rode Hiline last week, and there were so many hikers coming up it that I realized that the climb opportunity might happen! I dont like to climb popular DH trails where i'm totally against traffic- and its a total PITA to do multiple laps on Hiline, so I haven't played around on it. But if there are tons of hikers, everyone's runs are going to be minimal flow and adrenalin, so with all the over tourism, it might be a fun challenge!

I've had a bit of an unpopular opinion for a while: *Content creators need to stop hyping the white line.* That's pretty much the opposite of what this video was, to be sure. But much like creators have been put on blast for outing bandit trails and getting them shut down, I think too many non-pro riders (or those not under the observation of pro-riders) have leveraged the trail for some extra views and it's kinda diminishing the risk factor here. It's getting to the point where every Sedona MTB Fest I'm worried we're going to hear about some teenager that met a tragic end trying to film a viral video to jumpstart their IG or KZbin Account. But maybe I'm just overly opinionated. 😅
@brianrand71912 жыл бұрын
Agreed. This video is hilarious. JKW -“This trail is so dumb because it screams look at me” Also JKW “you may remember my other popular video where I rode a wheelie on this trail. That video got clicks, so I’m back at the same location.” Also JKW - “how can I make a career out of wheelies and stoppies and then claim I don’t care for flashy riding, while riding a high profile trail.” Come on. Give the viewers more credit.
@TrailFeatures2 жыл бұрын
@Brian Rand This wasn't a dig on Jeff. In fact it was a refreshing take on the white line and avoiding taking needless risks. This is why I said *_non-pro_* riders need to stop filming it for clicks, it's diminishing the risk of the feature. That's what I'm saying. Jeff can display more bike skills in 50ft of riding than I'll likely ever learn in my life being in my mid 30s. He's one of the few people that can ride the white line like he's riding a sidewalk. Even then, he doesn't take unneeded risks.
