He is loyal but to the boss. In 1-4, Dwight also loves Michael, but in the episode where he says "I am going wherever they value loyalty the most" is something that comes up in Michael versus Charles. As he likes Michael less and realizes more of his flaws, he distances himself from Michael and tries to rise above based on his own abilities and reputation. Then he becomes endeared to Charles and sees his actual competency and respectable demeanor. But in the end, Michael gets the better of Charles, and Dwight is left somewhere in the middle, with Charles turning on him and Michael no longer trusting him. In the next couple episodes though, they manage to work it out, and they come to a new and more mutual respect for each other.

Agreed. No matter how you look at it, I'm the bad guy. Michael's character arc was epic. And, from moron to well-loved sage, he rains charisma.

I remember this entire story arc. When Michael was begging someone to come with him I kept saying “Go with him Pam” it was so much like Jerry Maguire. Then Michael taking David and Charles down. Perfect!
