No sooner had No 8 Mervyn Davies been helped off the field with an injury, he raced down to the tunnel, took off his track suit and shoved aside two burly policemen in a frantic bid to make it onto the pitch before the referee blew for full-time. Here's is the welsh debut of Derek Quinnell in 1972.

@@errcoche They may have had day jobs - Bill McLaren included - but it was always serious - obvious from the way Derek Quinnell rushed onto the pitch...! Have you ever seen one of the match sheets McLaren used to prepare for each game? Must have taken him hours and hours before each match to write them up in his own particular colour-coding.

Derek earned another 22 Wales caps and become a highly respected administrator. He is currenetly president of Llanelli Rugby Club. Remarkably, his three sons, Scott, Craig and Gavin, all played top-flight professional rugby with Craig earning Wales caps in rugby union and Scott Wales caps in both union and rugby league. Sadly Gavin lost the sight of an eye after being injured playing for Llanelli against Crosskeys in October, 2010. The brothers are all nephews of Wales legend Barry John.

My games teacher at school was a scrum half, so was in the bench multiple times with Gareth a certain first selection. Something similar happened to him, the great man was injured at the end of the game and he ran up the tunnel to get on before the final whistle. Only touch of the ball he had was when the opposition scrum half let him touch the ball before he fed it into the scrum, I.e. not in play! Welsh cap got displayed at school assembled, legend is that it got passed around and someone nicked it! Never managed to prove that. RIP Clive Shell

Back when the lions used to throw up interesting sub stories. 89 Jerry Guscott had played once for England then became a test lion. Dawson and Bentley in 97 couldn’t even get into the England team yet played in the tests. It’s that unpredictability that miss. In fairness that whole Quinell family where rugby beasts.

Ah, the good old days when starting players had to complete the 80 minutes - unless the team doctor judged they were unable to continue through injury! Replacements really were that, and were bench warmers (no cap awarded) unless, like Mervyn Davies here, someone was unfortunate enough to be injured.

was no I in those days - British Isles aka British Lions ; term changed in millennium I recall

Because he was competing in Wales with the best number eight in the world: Mervyn Davies. In those days national teams only played about five or six games a year and always picked their strongest side and there were no subs (only injury replacements). You could literally be the second best player in the world, but if the best player in the world was in your national team in your position, well, you simply didn't play. Quinnell was one of the best forwards in Britain/Ireland at the time, so made the touring party. He just wasn't quite as good as Mervyn!
