There is a part two of this, to address mistakes and give additional info There's a lot people don't realize is Dutch, things like wifi and bluetooth, telescopes and microscopes, speed cams (sorry) but we also invented the Olympic Flame (by accident "totally planned" *sweeps signs of mistake under rug Big Brother and The Voice were created here (any program that has "EndeMol productions" or "Talpa Productions" or variation there of has Dutch roots) Actress Femke Jansen (Jean Grey/Phoenix - X-men, Xenia Onatopp - James Bond (GoldenEye)), Actor Rutger Hauer (Frank Warren - Wedlock, Bishop August Schmidt - The Poseidon Adventure (TV Movie from Hallmark)) and directors Jan de Bont and Paul Verhoeven who gave us movies like Robocop, Die Hard, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life , Basic Instinct and Total Recall (original) among others are all Dutch ... yeah it's much to take in Side note: The chips in nearly all devices these days are made by machines from ASML in Eindhoven PS: Did you know our King is a pilot @ KLM? Fun story about our classic windmills: Like 2 years ago a big river called the Maas flooded due to extreme amounts of rain. Which caused 'polders' (those low-land pieces of land surrounded mostly by water) to flood. We had modern pumpsystems working full speed to drain the land, but not with much succes as it would takes DAYS to fully drain the land. 'Molenaars' (people who operate the windmills) then thought of the idea of using their decade-old systems to help drain. The modern drainsystems couldn't even keep up: The decade-old windmills were 5 times faster!

In ancient times the river delta actually extended into England, until the land between England, the Netherlands and Norway, known as Doggerland, disappeared under water.

Also, in times of many attacks, The Netherlands used the waters to their advantage by flooding areas to make certain places unreachable. There is even a museum which explains all of that! ^-^ It's in Dutch called Watersnoodmuseum (literal translation being: Water disaster museum) in a place called Ouwerkerk which lies in the province Zeeland. Interestingly, they don't speak in the video about how the drinking water is one of the cleanliest 'cause of the filtering systems. If you go on vacation abroad, you are always advised to watch out when you use tap water, 'cause it is normal here to drink from the tap.

I could be wrong, but I think you are mixing things up here. Yes, The Netherlands used water to flood areas to make it hard for intruders. But I think the Watersnoodmuseum is mainly about the disaster of 1953, when a "perfect" storm made break the dikes and causing death and destruction. (Look for 'watersnoodramp 1953). After that the Dutch worked hard to build the Delta Works to protect The Netherlands from future storms, floodings and rising sea levels. The maintenance and building new constructions is a ongoing job till this day.

But if you visit the Netherlands, than suprise us, by speaking it the right way... not important, but it is always nice ! 👍 And our wooden shoes were mostly used by farmers because of Cows and other cattle, standing on their feet. Nobody want a cows on their feet, they are heavy. And many windmills were for watermanagement, but off course for pre production of bread too. If you visit the Netherlands, buy some sliced bread too. I have never heard an American not loving our bread. Yes a big surprise for me too. And Brian, I like your enthousiast reactions. on what you saw.

Well, at most places the dikes surrounding the area you're present and keeping it dry are hardly visible because they're so far away and/or trees and buildings are standing in between. So there's no reference nearby to remind you that you're walking on a flat, former sea floor deeply below sea level.

Oh yeah the land below sea level is kinda weird. But it's kinda like pumping water from your flooded basement into your garden. the wall between the two should be enough to keep the basement dry, But once there's a leak anywhere (in this case rain), You need to actively move the water elsewhere. It's surprisingly safe especially since a lot of the historic windmill pumps are kept in working condition for display purposes, And thus can be used whenever rainfall get's heavy. As for breaches and breaking dikes, that's only a concern if we ever declare war on another country, At which point we have bigger concerns.

I hear your confusion but it’s not that hard: Bonaire, Sint-Estatuis and Saba that are overseas municipalities, we call them BES. As municipality’s they are represented by the Dutch government. Aruba Curaçao and Sint-Maarten are equal and independent countries within the Kingdom. Only Aruba, Curaçao and Sint-Maarten have plenipotentiary ministers. I think in English you could call them gouverneurs. Together with Dutch ministers they form The Kingdoms Council of Ministers. They look after the kingdom affairs such as defense, citizenship and the kingdoms law. Aruba Curaçao and Sint-Maarten have their own constitution and legislation. But in defense and refugee laws they legislate together with the Dutch gouvernement. Difference is that BES are municipality’s and therefore represented by the Dutch ministers in Kingdom affairs.

Dude explained the situation in the carribean rather complicated while in essence it is quite simple: there are 3 autonomous countries, Aruba Curaçao St Maarten, all part of the kingdom and the remaining 3 islands Bonaire, St Eustatius and Saba are special status municipalities of the etherlands. Little facts about the Netherlands that have nothing to do with history and geography: The Netherlands invented Bluetooth. They also invented Wi-Fi alongside Australia and USA, but it has yet to be confirmed which country actually officially invented it. The Netherlands hold a monopoly over modern day computer chips, without us the world would not be able to have computer chips this fast and advanced. We also invented the microscope, Eye Tests, Cassette, CD, DVD and Blu-ray, The Telescope, Blender (the software), Python (the programming language), and many many more which changed the world! And they're still inventing things to this day.

What is sure about crankshaft that it enabled the Hollanders( the Netherlands did'nt existed yet) to build faster, predominantly the ships for the VOC(united east indies companies) a private organisation that were more criminal as most want to admit. Well Dutch EIC (VOC) was the biggest fleet at the time. Think in the Dutch golden age the Dutch were more rich than entire europe combined. Fun fact: In 1667 the Dutch sailed on the medway, sunk the entire Briitish fleet, forcing peace on Dutch Terms. The Brittish only became powerfull later on. The stock exchange / capitalism being one of the biggest reason for the wealth. Was more about trade and money, not about colonizing places, so trading posts were all over but did not control everything. The discovered land but only stayed in places that made money. Indonesia was the milking cow as spices were rare and most came from here, nutmeg, cloves, pepper etc. It was the first big evil corpo, willing to enter into the slave trade, commit genocide and start wars. And obviously the Dutch government did not stop them.

WTF, how is Amsterdam the royal residence? The king lives in The Hague, not in a 'Royal palace in Amstedam'

@albalexdisy That's mainly Amsterdam or Rotterdam, but thinking you've seen all if you've been to Amsterdam is a big mistake.

The popularity of the king is going fast down the hill. He’s start called willem the last. So back to the republic. The people dudn’t choise to be a kingdom. France and Germany made it.

9:08 You're seriously surprised Dutch words aren't pronounced in an English way? :P Although a Dutch person would usually call it "Goudse kaas" instead (cheese from Gouda).
