Is THIS the Perfect Camera for YouTube? Sony ZV-E1 Review

This is the camera I use for all my videos… the overheating drives me crazy. Right there with you. I spend 30-40 mins shooting, then want to do b roll and by then my camera is overheating and I need to wait 15mins or so

Right?! Ugh. It's funny how b-roll clips aren't too long (unless you are trying to do a time lapse) but even just 10-15 one or two minute shots set the camera on fire. Have you considered upgrading to one of the other Sony cams? I hear people rave about the FX-30 but it's hard to go back to aps-c from FF.

Thank you for rhe video. Was just wondering about this topic. Qas thinkong of adding a low light camera to couple worh my A7C2. Ive heard everyone loves the ZVE1 but hate the over heating. Wpuldnt be worth it to me. Thats why i sent back the A6700. I loved that camera, but it over heated constantly while streaming.

I hadn't heard that about the a6700, interesting to know! Yeah it's SO close to being the best camera ever. I still absolutely love it and for the price, I deal with the overheating. It really depends how you use it though. I can't wait to see what Sony does next with the product line. What are you going to get? The FX30 seems pretty slick but it would be annoying to have different sensor sizes.

Absolutely love my ZV-E!, I think it looks better than my A7SIII somehow, but I shoot in mostly 4k24. Great video as always

It REALLY looks good right? I love mine too. If they can just somehow keep it cool I would be so happy! It's almost perfect! I've even had deep menu sessions and looking at videos where it overheated. That's not cool.

Yeah that's great. I think if you use it normally it's fine. The fact I'm maxing out the frame rate and resolution, well, even though it can technically "do it" I wouldn't say the camera was built to "handle" it. So it's a little frustrating for me since I just didn't realize it could only do them for a short time!

Nice! I thought you sold it for some reason...once you get use to 'fan is life' it's the best camera out for this kinda video making. I'm so glad I stuck with it too and chose it over the A7c ii and that 'green tint' (lol sorry a7c ii). Streaming with it the quality is basically unmatched - the AI focuses and white balances a bit better than it's bigger brothers. Thanks for the deep dive.

Thanks for the comment! I know it seems like was throwing shade at it but it really is the best bang for the buck camera out there (imho) for how I use it anyway. It's not perfect and there are workarounds. I probably should have kept that fan as there have been a few times where I just needed a few minutes before it overheated but I was too cheap. Maybe I though I would get a different camera but what else would I even get at this point?! Still happy with it and I'm glad to hear you are too. Do you just use that Ulanzi fan or?

Did you update to the latest 2.00 firmware? There's no mention of any improvement on overheating but maybe the update did something to improve it?

So true. I bought an fx30 because the overheating on my zv-e10ii just made me feel stressed whenever I went to use it

Interesting! How had the fx30 been treating you? Anything you wish it did that it doesn't or is it pretty great?

@@thesahdstudioso I really JUST got it and have had a chance to use it yet. I was debating between the Tamron 17-70, Sigma 18-50, and Sony 18-105. I started with the Tamron thinking it would be a good all in one lens but within the first 5 minutes decided to return it to get the other 2 lenses instead. It just felt a bit bulky to pick up and hold. It’s not that the lens is SO HEAVY, but it is a bit awkward when you’re holding a camera by the grip. The extra weight and length kinda tips it out of your hand. The other 2 lenses just arrived yesterday so I haven’t put them on yet. But my thought process is the Sigma will be more comfortable for just picking up the camera to take shots, and the Sony will be better for using the power zoom and getting stabilized video. The FX-30 zoom rocker just felt so good like it was begging to have a power zoom lens on there. Ask me again in a few days and I’ll let you know what I think of the setup.

Just out of interest, why 4k60 for talking head? I only do 60 when there’s a chance I will want to slow the footage down, what are the benefits for talking head?

It's a good question and I don't have a better answer other than saying I just think it looks slicker. There's something about 50/60fps that I think makes the video FEEL more interactive, even when it's just a talking head shot. I think it looks better for b-roll and having the ability to slow it down when you need (like you said) is nice to have that option. The camera CAN do it but it's just not sustainable, and that's a bit of a bummer. I feel like it's been awhile since Sony has upgraded any of their video cameras... something must be coming soon right? A7SIV? And upgraded FX-3? The follow up to this camera... I still feel like all of these cameras are better value than the competitors but maybe I'm wrong. A lot of people seem to LOVE the Lumix cameras though I am doubtful they will be on par with FF in low light.

I don’t understand why you would shoot in 4k60 unless you are slowing it down -slow motion. Why bother if it’s going to cause overheating? It doesn’t even look any better anyway. If you love 4K60 that much for even non slow motion then sell the camera and get something that won’t overheat at 4k60 like the A7iv

I had the A7iv but it had a crop at 4k60 so it didn't get the shot I wanted. And yeah, I hear you. It's just preferences. I prefer the way it looks and love the flexibility it offers when shooting. They made the camera able to do it so it should be able to do it.

the 4k60 and 4k120 on the ZV-E1 are for shorter sequences. If you shoot for more than a few minutes you buy the OG- the A7S3 or FX3 Or A7iv. Why didn’t you just get a wider apsc lens for the A7iv? You understand that 4k60 is 40% speed of 4K24? And 4K120 is 20% ? For slow motion footage. You’re in a super tiny minority that shoots talking head vids in 4K60. It’s a waste of memory IMO But if you like it just get the FX3. Just finance it at 0% if you can’t afford it. The camera is made for you. The ZVe1 isn’t. You bought the wrong camera.

If the holiday discounts force the used market into the $1,300 to $1,500 price range, I will grab this camera, knowing it may overheat. $2,000 is steep this late in the game.

I really wouldn't blame you. It's so good. I just talked a lot about this camera and Loy-keyrecommend it in my videos so I just wanted to put my official stance out there you know? I think for most people it's more than enough camera... But it does overheat. I guess the extra frustrating thing is you wouldn't expect the camera to get hot when you're just looking around in the menus... But that's when it's working especially hard. So if it takes a few minutes to set up your camera before you shoot or you're changing the settings while you're doing your b-roll. Waiting around for your camera to cool down while you're shooting b-roll, that's even more frustrating for me. And if somebody hired me to shoot their wedding or something I would be pretty stressed out using this camera.

@thesahdstudio yeah I can totally see that. See my perspective is totally different because I am a guy who only has the pocket 3 and my phone lol. So I would purchase this camera as my first big boy camera. I have debated going APSC and saving some money with a fx-30 or a6700 seeing how I am a noob to everything videography. Or even staying with the pocket 3 until I get good fundamentals down. But I don't feel that desire to whip out my pocket 3. And every time I hold a real camera I feel like I need to go film. It just sucks because that motivation comes with a huge price tag haha. Thanks for the vid. I will definitely be checking eBay frequently to find a deal.
