I still think the apocalyptic opening that I used to start the campaign I ran for you was the best I've found. Characters get to choose whatever they might be doing across a large city. A bit of individual roleplay. The skyfalls, now everyone in the city is making split second decisions. Cultists pop up in small numbers allowing groups of characters in the same area to team up and dispatch them. And, it gives them that epic feeling of running toward danger while everyone else flees. They get to the crater for a level 1 boss fight where they can all use their abilities that they tested in the previous small frays to work together in defeating the imminent threat. Though the game I'm playing now was set to start with a shipwreck and I actually really liked that too. They were all on a ship headed to a tropical island get away for a much needed R&R. Starting at 3rd level, we said they had joined forces to dispatch some low level threat levels 1 - 2 and now they were vacationing together. When a hurricane develops in the harbor from seemingly no where. I let the characters make their dice rolls and surprisingly they managed to save their ship and a prince from a nearby wreck, which lead to further intrigue and adventure down the road. I strongly advise that as soon as the campaign opens, let the characters roll if there's a reason to and just improv the outcomes if it doesn't go according to plan. Otherwise though, agree. Shipwrecks are a great starting point.
