I think Frank Zappa said it best when he said that in the early days of music production the executives simply did not care if a song was good or not, as long as it sold, so they wouldn't meddle in the production of said song. Now the producers think they know what makes a good song which has led to almost all songs to sound similar, with almost no unique sound. Just like the music industry, the game industry is showing signs of corporate meddling which has caused many of the new games produced to be unimaginative shlock with no creativity to be found.

It's similarly to the feeling the rest of the world often has for the USA's commercial habits driving so much of the market, because these consumers have more money.
@LaMarcheFutilé1016 ай бұрын
@@aantony2001 The thing is, though, for most of these games it _isn't_ profitable. It is for a very small few of them that become wildly successful, but just look back to the past two years- there have been dozens upon dozens of live-service games made by major studios that have flopped just in that short time period alone. The companies want "live service" to mean "infinite money engine that runs forever," and what it actually means is "low-tier time waster." And players are _painfully_ aware of this fact, which is why most live-service games are bombing, hard. Whales can sustain stuff like microtransaction-ladden gacha games where the costs are low and there's plenty of churn in the player base. Relying on them for a huge AAA live-service multiplayer game like this is almost always a failure, though. And not just in the sense of not taking the top slot in the market, most of them are financial failures that overall lose the company money. They would literally have been better off burying the money in a hole than they would making this game.
@AdumbroDeus6 ай бұрын
@@aantony2001 that's not how it works though. Yeah, people focus too much on Drax being the "haha can't understand metaphor" guy and a lot less on the "scarred warrior who watched his family die in front of his eyes and knows he'll never feel that kind of love ever again". When they say "Rocket Raccoon" they immediately go to "scrappy inventor with a potty mouth" instead of "mad scientist experiment who sees himself as an abomination and hates himself above all". They treat these characters as if the first thing Rocket did once out of prison WASN'T getting himself drunk and screaming "I DIDN'T ASK TO BE MADE!" in the middle of a crowded bar. Peter was stolen from his family to become a living battery, and even if he was saved from that fate he grew up among pirates who, even if they cared about him, still threatened to eat him. Gamora was also ripped from her family, except she also got to watch half her planet being gunned down and was then forced to live as the right hand woman of the person who did it. These characters are only comedic when they're together because their coping mechanisms clash so well. Every time they're alone with their thoughts or with someone else they unravel into the ball of unresolved trauma they are. Drax with Mantis, Peter with Ego, Rocket with Yondu, Gamora with Nebula, all scenes from the second movie without an OUNCE of comedy. The only character who really doesn't fit in this is Groot, who is smartly introduced as a sidekick before becoming someone everyone else can bond over raising.

I'm in roughly the same boat. While I don't mind realism, I tend to lean towards stylization because it doesn't tire out my eyes. You could have all the graphic fidelity and power in the world but that doesn't automatically mean your game will look *good*. Any of you remember LawBreakers? It came out in 2017, made by Cliff Blezinski's studio. It was an FPS (obviously) that mimicked a lot of what Overwatch did, but with some genuinely cool new gamemodes and an interesting low-gravity mechanic. It shut down within a few months because it had quite literally 0 players. It was noteworthy back then - now I see it as the harbinger of death for the modern game industry. LawBreakers should have been a moment of realisation, a warning for AAA companies - instead, they completely doubled down, and now every game is LawBreakers.

I actually enjoyed LawBreakers. The movement felt a bit stiff but that was certainly something that could have been smoothed out in time if the demand had been there. Nowadays, developers see Hero Shooters as easy cash-grabs because Team Fortress 2 is a bot-ridden mess and nobody on the face of the Earth is a fan of Overwatch's monetization system, so as far as they're concerned, the genre is ripe for the taking.

This almost makes me feel defensive of GoTG. The second two movies, Vol 3 especially, still felt like a heartfelt, personal passion project on James Gunn’s part. I feel like we’d all be a lot fonder towards them if EVERY SINGLE OTHER SCI-FI/FANTASY BLOCKBUSTER FRANCHISE _THING_ WASN’T TRYING TO _BE THEM._ They had a fun, goofball, technicolour, slightly vulgar, Flash-Gordon-but-make-it-sarcastic tone. Great. Worked for them. Does NOT MEAN WE WANT THAT FOR BREAKFAST LUNCH AND DINNER. YOU DON’T GET TO CALL YOUR FRANCHISE ‘OFFBEAT’ IF THERE’S 50 OTHERS INSINCERELY FLOGGING THE SAME SCHTICK. 20 years ago nobody was complaining about quips. Maybe they rolled their eyes at them, but they were understood to be a playful genre thing that had their place. Now over-saturation has turned audiences off cheesy, winking Han Solo-esque dialogue and I feel like that’s a _crime._ It was supposed to be a _treat._ Reserved for particular characters and particular films, deployed at the right moments. If they’re exhausting people then something, somewhere, has gone _terribly terribly wrong._

If you want to play a big budget game starring the Guardians of the Galaxy, it literally exists. Most people didn't notice but it was fantastic. But I do feel for the developers of Concord. Sony built an entire studio for THIS game six years ago. They're doing the Overwatch model of introducing its characters first in hopes that you love them. And their big reveal is side by side the Marvel version of their genre of game. And since Marvel is one of the most popular brands on the planet, they didn't have to lay any groundwork to get you to buy into characters like Spider-Man. I feel for the developers. They deserved a project with more defined vision.

I feel like the problem with this is they're revealing their characters first hoping people will love them but the characters are all bland tropes cosplaying as characters... I can see some artistic merit in this game - like, I genuinely think the character designs for this look interesting and do some things right, but that trailer's writing was so weak it doesn't matter how nice they look. Also the 5v5 pvp thing already proved it's not a conducive model for lore-based games (OW keeps shooting itself in the foot bc people love the characters but they just don't give the players lore). Why should I love characters that sound like generic cardboard cutouts and are trapped in a game that's not likely to get a cohesive plot that allows them to shine? If they went all in with the lore and made this a BG3 style single player RPG I'd be genuinely interested in this. But instead we once again get the lowest base line for writing and they expect us to like this stuff, it's puzzling

As somone who's father likes technology and is in their 60s, I think his viewpoint says it all for me about what these executives must have going through their heads. He ALWAYS, without fail, pretty much just judges the graphics. He never plays any games that aren't going for a "realistic" or "war" visual style (kind of like a teenager who never got out of the phase of wanting to consume only "adult" things,) When he does play something that isn't like that, he basically mashes buttons and refuses to engage with the gameplay. Although he does play "realistic" games he buys, (Pretty much either racing games or shooters), I have a hunch that he doesn't play them very often. It reminds me of how these corporate entities basically ramp up the graphics to 110%, use the same "realistic" style that rarely looks interesting or unique, and that rarely deviates. They also barely care about the actual gameplay of their games just ripping off what their corporate partners have made that did okay at one point in time, as a result being extremely out-of-touch with their consumers.
@joshwillcox71416 ай бұрын
You're basically describing my dad who is only 50 but still he ONLY plays "realistic" games such as GTA or driving sims. I've tried to explain why the design of Mario Kart is so clever and actually has a really high skill ceiling but because going round a corner without touching the brake button makes absolutely no sense to him whatever because it's not "real enough" he just writes off any and all kart racers as bad. Then he'll use GTA 5's high sales numbers to convince me it's actually really good like Mario Kart 8 isn't the highest selling racing game ever made. I don't care if a game is stylized or more realistic or aimed at kids or adults. If game fun, I play game.

It feels like AAA video game devs are the network CEO bots from Futurama. One rolled some dice and said "sitcoms are in!", and you simply replace sitcoms with "5 v 5 hero shooters" and there ya have it. It's so baffling how they can see so many copies in this genre fail, and still make one. The arrogance of that thought process is crazy. The genre is so oversaturated but WE can do it better! It's crazy talk. And as a result a lot of people are going to lose their jobs, which sucks. So what's the over/under on the servers for this game shutting down after launch? 6 months? Less than that? You can see its failure already.
@Rainbro3596 ай бұрын
They don't see the failures. They only see the rare successes that blow up and make infinity money. Why spend your time making unique games for decent money when you can just roll the dice repeatedly and hope for the jackpot? And hey, if it doesn't work, fire the devs and try again.
