Is This the Solution to Mowing Slopes?

One of the most asked questions I get in comments on this channel is about how to safely mow slopes on a tractor. It's a topic I obviously won't touch because of liability issues. My stock answer is, "If the slope worries you, don't mow there." The reality is, there are way too many factors that impact predicting how slopes can safely be mowed, they include the center of gravity of the tractor, ground speed, ballast, wheel settings, and what's in the loader bucket and how high it is.
I recently attended the GIE Expo in Louisville, Kentucky. I was there to do video for a magazine I write for, Rural Lifestyle Dealer, but I also wanted to check out the show to evaluate if it was something I could recommend to my viewers, also to see if there was anything new coming that might be of interest. A product that can mow extreme (and rough) slopes caught my eye.
There are solutions on the horizon that would make mowing slopes significantly safer and I got to see one in action at the GIE Expo. It's a rough cut mower that positions the operator down low, and that feature alone makes it much more stable on hills. The game changer, though, is the additional option gives you remote control operation of the mower, so you can stand nearby and guide the process, without having to be on the machine. If you take your weight off the machine, the stability increases drastically.
While the price of the riderless option will scare a lot of us, it shows what technology is available with brush hogging. If you have a steep hill that just HAS to be mowed, this machine may appeal to you. I have to wonder if in the near future there won't be a reason for us to be on the mower, getting covered with grass and risking overturn.

By the way, if you're into mowing or landscaping, the GIE Expo in Louisville is a show you definitely want to go to. It's in October each year and it is HUGE! It's maybe not exactly the show for the rural lifestyle person, but if you're thinking about building a patio, finding the latest way to cut grass, or especially if you have a commercial mowing company, DON'T MISS THIS SHOW!!!
