I think the brilliant "Synthwave" scene on YT has definitely flourished a Cyberpunk scene. Musicians like Perturbator, Timecop 1983, and things like the Drive movie soundtrack have created a sort of Imaginary , fantasized aesthetic, image of what people want the 80s to have been like. Its like the brilliant soundtrack to an imaginary past, with future visions mixed together.

I once saw an argument that people find cyberpunk so appealing because "we have dystopia, but not the neon". We don't have the tech of a cyber-dystopia, but we have a harsh divide between rich and poor. In South Korea we have Samsung, which could be considered one of the first so called "Mega-Corps" with small children wanting to work in Samsung. Here in Croatia, you got the police that don't give a shit, and a very corrupt government that you can end up with a hefty ticket if you critisize them.

I'm sorry to tell you but we have lived in a cybernetic nightmare since at least the turn of the millennium. The stock market has been dominated by fully automated AI traders since the mid-late 00's and there are things you dont want to know and that I dont want to tell that have been done to us all since the beginning of the war on terror. We do have a cybernetic dystopia. In the context of the interdisciplinary field of control systems theory, biology, psychology and social studies, the study of "systems that are under control" (cybernetics is derived from the same word that the island of Cyprus derives its name from, it means something along the lines of "helmsman", cybernetics deals with the "study of the way/workings of the helmsman) we definitely live in a dystopia that springs from malignant and/or dysfunctional interaction of systems and the exploitative behavior of actors within that system.

There is also the entire Vaporwave/Synthwave/Retrowave/Neonwave aesthetic ... Nether Cyberpunk ( 1988 ), nor any of the other art styles ending in "punk", have gained much traction in popular culture for very long before being forgotten about.

Why I like Cyberpunk is because it's sci-fi's pessimistic response to corporate culture. Something which 2077 touches on really well imo It removes itself from the campy nature of a future like Star Trek's and puts the viewer into a dark and gritty future which seems grounded in a realism that we're yet to truly see, but are already in the midst of.

I love Retrofuturism and mainly the retro aesthetics and the post-apocalyptic and, as Jimmy says, the high tech low life story aspect of the late 70s to late 80s which is for the most part all Cyberpunk but I struggle with the fact that people tend to just call Cyberpunk anything that is retrofuturistic. Like for example the Fallout series which is a great example of Atompunk, or the Bioshock series of which 1 and 2 are mainly Biopunk and the Infinite game is mainly Dieselpunk with some hints of Steampunk, and well Cyberpunk 2077 should be an easy guess. And even though there are a handful of derived aspects of Cyberpunk that can exist in other retrofuturistic settings or even outside them they are not all-encompassing and only target small aspects of the Retrofuturism, e.g Biopunk is synthetic life forms and Biotech (like cyborgs and technology that enhances/cures life forms in many different ways), Tech-noir is just a Noir story in a cyberpunk setting or Nanopunk which is just Nano technology so in reality it should be a sub-genre of the Boipunk sub-genre; so they don't tend to be separate from Cyberpunk itself but they can be. So I do understand that it's not hard at all to be confused with a bunch of it. And I know it's just nerd talk to most people but saying Fallout is Cyberpunk is no different than saying Metallica is Classic Rock or saying that Skrillex is Techno, there are different music genres for a reason. I don't know if by coincidence or not but just like cyberpunk the term Retrofuturism which encapsulates all forms of these kind of sci-fi representations was also coined in 1983 (allegedly). Great video as always Jimmy, you actually did a great job for this one and the recall to the Cybergoths was a good bit of nostalgic fun, I sadly was one of those that took time out of his day to mock that infamous group of German Cybergoths "dancing" under a bridge on KZbin when it blew up... They didn't ask for it they were just having fun in their own way.

Great video as always, Jimmy!!! I'm going to play devil's advocate on a couple of points. 1. AI and Cybernetics... The evidence is pretty damning that the former has come nowhere close to passing The Turing Test, and isn't likely to, thus won't be taking over the planet anytime soon. In regards to human beings and machines merging: That's been happening for centuries in some capacity. Using eyewear to correct our vision and mechanical pacemakers are two examples 2. We're bombarded with headlines constantly regarding the growing gap between the haves and the have nots. Fact is though, more people across the planet enjoy lives which are firmly middle class than at anytime in history. Technology in no small part has made this possible

Cyberpunk world is so grim because everything man-made is or eventually becomes faulty because for one mechanisms can't repair themselves, algorithms do only what they are told to or within the defined bonds and we can't comprehend intricate and necessary links between natural processes to make them error free. Not even with man-made AI. By circuitbending nature we could achieve max benefit but it slowly ruins natural cycles and all goes wrong once system encounters error that it can't mitigate in time or human developers have forgotten source code over decades. BTW the oposite to cyberpunk would be described in book "West of Eden" where instead of inanimate technology they had living organisms adjusted by means of deliberate mutation and used them as tools that being alive could heal on their own and could self adjust to local biom and be beneficial to it.

Cyberpunk's premise is that the future brings technology, but doesn't solve social problems - if anything, it exacerbates them. The rich get richer, the poor stay poor, wars continue but the weapons get flashier. You might get a self-driving car, but you're still going to have to make the loan payments on it, and it's still going to be driving you towards a miserable job with a boss you hate. The heroes of cyberpunk stories are characters who use their great technical skill to fight back against the corrupt corporate powers, totalitarian police state and other agents of all that is wrong with the world. They reclaim the promise of technology as an agent for liberation.

Cyberpunk and Cybergoths are different. Got ya. Cyberpunk is like Emo's in the future. Eh? Didn't Emo's evolve from Goths whereas Cyberpunk comes from, er, Punks? 🙃 To drill down further Cyberpunk was written (short story) in 1980 by a guy called: Bruce Bethke. Cybergoths are a subculture of Goth, heavily influenced by dance and rave who have incorporated elements of Goth, Raver, Rivethead, and Cyberpunk subcultures. Although I would consider the argument that Cyberpunk isn't actually a subculture of anything as it exists in art (movies, tv and writing) but I've never met anyone who states: "I'm a Cyberpunk!" gotta be someone somewhere though I suppose. I guess the closest thing we've got in reality to a Cyberpunk are the folks programming and hacking as part of the dark net? But I don't think their all yellow Mohicans, bright coloured clothes, got bits of metal sticking out of them and spend the night shooting up corporations. But, it must be said, Cybergoths are the coolest (in my opinion) looking party revellers! Cool vid though dude and very cool visuals!

I think we need more positive science fiction franchises where technology and science is not perceived as evil.

I believe a core theme that may arise (and is already showing some of its signs) is that technology is merely neutral, and can enable both good and evil depending on the choices we make - rather than it being a directly one-sided theme. More works that operate in shades of grey, rather than black and white, are already presenting themselves in both cinematic and videogame space.

One thing I am gonna call bull on is the Cyberpunk Genre spawning from those other genres specifically, though it's debatable. But it existed since around... the 60s if I'm correct but not necessarily called Cyberpunk, it's possible that the title just changed around as it is still Essentially Science Fiction, but it's more socially critical and philosophically enabled than it's counterparts through its own commentary. I would say modern America and I would also like to blame the UK for turning it into a joke and a trend rather than something to be approached seriously and with a thinking mind. Especially since the dynamics of what being "Punk" is in the modern sense compared to people's ideas.... it's a conversation alot of people will go out of their way to avoid. Basically the punk aspect of Cyberpunk that it is a more pessimistic and realistic approach to telling man not to go to far in trying to essentially transcend his own existence. It talks about the things we should not glorify or chase instead of enjoying life right here, right now, because change or no change man is one pathetic, evil, piece of crap. But the silver lining is always there, in some way, usually internally.

You kinda missed to define what Cyberpunk actually means. Which most people dont know. Cyberpunk goes hand in hand with endstage capitalism. Not a political statement, feel free to Google this term. We are currently in the beginning states of this era. Cyberpunk always takes place at the end of this era. When everything is basically f up already. Cyberpunk 2077 portrays this rather well despite all it's shortcomings. So I kinda fail to see why anyone wants to live in a Cyberpunk universe. It's a living nightmare. That is the whole point. It's not suppose to be pleasant for a vast majority of people.
