This era of the Rigid Pro/Cineback rigs is amazing. It's like the grown up and way more practical version of all of us adding rails/matteboxes/follow focuses to our T3i bodies back in the day.

This seems insane. It feels like people have forgotten the BS1H. Panasonic are more than capable of making a cube camera. Also I appreciate that these are all tools but this feels like opening a can with a hammer. This does seem like it’s missed the entire point of a mirrorless set up with an evf. Given how cheap a canon c300iii is I just don’t understand this frankenrig mentality. Once the audio recorder joints in it really screams get a cine camera with dual XLR audio. Given that you came from an Eva 1 I just don’t understand why bother especially given you have a Komodo. Likewise how much is a second hand fx6? Or even a second hand c300ii? All this phaff doesn’t make it Netflix approved just bigger and now no evf. Even the BGH1 is Netflix approved. I know some people might say why does Netflix specs matter… just as a benchmark of whether a rig is heading in the right direction, i think they absolutely do.

Love the video Ed! I currently use a similar “bits and bobs” rig for my S5ii, but seeing a rig like this def makes me think about upgrading. Also would make me feel better about having this serve as a proper B Cam for my Kinefinity. Great content as usual mate!

Nice review! I've been thinking about getting one of these for my Sony a7siii. What do you say to the "voices" online that say "Just get a cinema camera?" You might have already answered the question now thst I think as I type. You mentioned having the option of going from a heavy rig to a light one when needed. I like that flexibility.
@EdProsser3 ай бұрын
Yeah lots of reasons - flexibility and convenience mainly. Maybe you don't want a full on cine cam all the time... Maybe you're happy enough with the image quality from your mirrorless but occasionally want a more pro setup for certain shoots or just better rigging options. Modern cameras are so competent now that you don't always need to spend a lot more on a larger cine cam... even if you do you're probably still gonna have to rig it up with other bits and bobs anyway.

Thanks - Great review as always. I am always nervous about powering cameras and monitors off the same batterry for fear of frying the hdmi port when powering up/down - I know this was an issue with Blackmagic cameras I have had in the past. Do you know Ed if Lumix cameras are as susceptible to this or if their cameras are better grounded to avoid such issues? Even RED & Arri I believe advise users when powering up to connect SDI/hdmi cables 'last', and to remove them 'first' when powering down... I am quite forgetful so I just power either the monitor OR camera off the v-lock... never the two, even tho it would be way more convenient to do the latter..
@EdProsser3 ай бұрын
I haven't had any issues, I generally follow the protocol with my Komodo but lots of times batteries have died or cable has been pulled out - and never had an issue touch wood.

@TerenceKearns14 күн бұрын
Definitely about impressing the clients.
@EdProsser14 күн бұрын
I think it depends, I use this camera alongside a much larger camera anyway, so it doesn't really matter that my b or c cam is a smaller mirrorless cam - and many of my shoots the client isn't even there! BUT I do think for some people it'll help if this is their primary camera and it's a valid point - I don't think there's anything wrong in wanting to look professional as it's important how you're perceived. If you're chaotic, messy and disorganised it can give off a bad vibe. For me it's mostly functional as I prefer to run the camera off a single v-mount and this is cleaner than a base-plate, rails and v-mount plate in my opinion. I don't like having to monitor and swap out the tiny LUMIX batteries throughout the day. Finally for me - I need bulk when I'm shooting - the bare bones mirrorless setup is too lightweight for smooth handheld work. Basically everything I said in the video.
@TerenceKearns13 күн бұрын
yeah the system has useful function. Ive just personally witnessed non-camera people talk about how they are impressed with operator X because they had a super professional looking rig. I don't care what anyone says, it *is* very effective for getting gigs. And therefore a legit form of marketing. Particularly when it is your A cam, and youre not rollin' around with a big arri alexa. Of course us video nerds know that its not about the rig, as much as it is about the operator - who has all the creative ideas and the skill to carry it through to make a product that impresses ultimately and enduringly. If you got plenty of experience, youre getting the gigs and so the issue is a moot point.

How do you pack this in a case? Do you completely break it down to pack in a case? What case or camera bag do you use for this?
@EdProsser3 ай бұрын
It's not very big, you can store the camera without lens / battery and it'll fit in most average sized cam bags. I'd usually transport it in a pelicase with a lens on, I can fit it in the same case as my Komodo I think it's the Peli 1535.
