Big shout out to0 Marty for the loan of hsi lovely SPB143J1. I thnk for many people this will indeed represent the sweet spot in terms of dollars spend to Seiko received. The 6R35 is a good one, overall build quality is very nice, lume, sapphire etc, all top notch. If only they had actually matched the bracelet to the case??!! Cheers, Jody

This Seiko is Seiko's answer to the Rolex Submariner it will be classic as they got everything right on this piece. The size is spot on, the dial and handset are spot on, a classic in the making. Just my humble opinion of course.

Thanks Jody.. Appreciate the spin on the time-grapher too.. The Job they did on the AR sapphire crystal is the clearest I've ever seen, it make that dial incredible on wrist, and the level of finish on the stainless is far above any other seiko I have. Your great video skills just cant do this justice.. 10 years on down the track.. I'll be putting in a new movement. Not servicing the 6R.. It helped justify the price.. Perhaps that dust will stay in for 10 years...

Got mine during the pandemic, Christmas 2020, and I was so pleasantly surprised. Perfect proportions, no gimmicks, just a great dive watch. Only criticism would be the reflective crystal (I wouldn't mind if that was a flat crystal as the domed one sometimes looks 'foggy'?)

I just love the look of this classic diver. I have yet to find a decent Seiko steel bracelet other than the one on the first gen Monster. I replaced all my steel bracelets with Uncle Seiko and Strapcode options, far superior. I am also fairly certain that I know exactly where Seiko has cut costs; they closed down their quality control division. As always, great video.

I've owned the SPB149J1 for several months and I wholly agree with your review. For me, this is my perfect Seiko diver. I love the vintage styling queues. The bracelet while being solid and good looking just misses the mark on fit mostly due to that awkward diver's extension. The OEM Seiko rubber strap that comes with the limited-edition and the SPB147J1 looks great while also being very comfortable. And as you said it's a strap monster and lots of fun to pair with different straps. Love your videos Jody, best wishes from Ireland.

I actually don't mind the end links. The center male link is flush with the case so it look intentional to me, rather than corner being cut. My real issue is the movement.6R15/35 is good but has wide tolerances. I can spend the same amount of a Swatch Group diver from Mido/Tissot/Hamilton/etc. and it would come with a Powermatic 80, which has much tighter tolerances when it comes to accuracy, I know Seiko movements are "workhorses", but I don't want to spend $1000 and basically hope that the watch is generally accurate. Of all my watches, my most accurate watch is a Powermatic 80, then a Miyota 82XX, then Seiko 7S26, THEN Seiko 6R15. All watches are working within tolerances. If the 6R movements had tighter accuracy tolerances, I'd buy this at full retail, sight unseen online, and in an instant. I fell like I need to go to AD, try it on my wrist, and see if I love it enough to gamble $1000 to buy a watch that wouldn't need to take to a watchmaker to regulate.

Once again a very nice review, this time of a modern interpretation of an absolute classic Seiko watch which needs no introduction. The original 6217-8000 was where it all began for Seiko in the dive watch stakes and anything they can offer us mere mortals which harks back to this legend is ok by myself. The SLA release was out of the price range for most but this particular watch is absolutely on the money for the vast majority, staying as close as possible to the original design and dimensions. The previous 62Mas Seiko release you mentioned was actually the SPB051 and not the 053 which was the blue version but the same watch nevertheless. It’s larger case size although beautifully finished and with a strap to die for, distanced itself from the original on which it was designed unfortunately, but a great release nevertheless. Keep them coming !

I bought this when it came out, your right about the bracelet, very heavy, but it looks much better on a black or dark grey tropic rubber strap. my only issue is it runs about a minute a day too fast, haven't been able to have it fixed yet, waiting for Seiko dealers to open up. but would recommend it, also had the San Martin 62mas, and have to say in some ways I preferred it, but since this is a Seiko I thought I would keep this, also the bezel & dial are a delight!

The SPB147J1 on a rubber strap looks amazing! The sharper angles and boxy lugs gives it a high end tool-y feel that IMHO, a signed crown would diminish. The unsigned crown seems like a deliberate design choice to give this series of watches an understated quality and seriousness.

Have to agree. I panic bought at full retail (no tax via Gnomon, luckily) and love it, but braclet integration is crap, and also, the extension digs in over the day. Had to get a uncle seiko tropic and a strapcode bracelet to try and find a better option. Both fit better, but the bracelet is a different shade. Also, mine loses 10s a day. Pay the money and take a chance.....

Yup. I agree that some Seikos are too dear. I also agree that many micro's offer more for less spec wise, and a number of micro brands hold their value very well. But that doesn't mean that I won't buy Seiko when I like the watch and I'll certainly never pay retail. If I'm prepared to wait until the heat surrounding certain references fades, I will always pick them up heavily discounted. Admittedly, even at a discount they are not cheap for what they are but why should they be? I paid $700AUD (from an online AD) for my SPB123J Alpinist late last year. It's an absolute cracker of a timepiece at a price that I think is more than fair for what I got. Whether the heat will ᴇᴠᴇʀ die down on this piece I can't say.., It seems to be the luxury watch crowds go to 'beater' atm... But if it does and they hit Starbuy for ~$1K AUD, I'll be ᴛʜʀᴏᴡɪɴɢ my $ at this piece!

Awesome review as always Jody 👏👏👏👏 Lovely looking watch. I’ve been very tempted by one of these but being a bonafide bracelet guy I think I’d need Seiko to up their game a bit in the bracelet department for this price. You make a great point about the unsigned crown for $1000. It’s insane that a $50 Pagani has a signed crown and seiko doesn’t even do it on watches over $1000! HiJody, I've only picked up your channel in the last couple of months but really enjoy your videos....keep up the good work. Although I just want to say that signed crowns goes against the Prospex brand. Ever since the first Laurel, Seiko have not put signed crowns on their professional "outdoor/diver" watches. I think that there may be 2 exceptions for short run "limited" editions. I think that blinging up these watches with signed metalware paradoxically dilutes the strength of the branding....I really don't like the signed keeper and buckle on my SRPE37. I won't be going for a "King" version of any of their watches again. I do have an SPB143 and I think it's a really nice watch (luckily it's a good one!), nobody quite does a dial like Seiko - if you're lucky enough to get a dust free one. If somebody wants a signed crown, get a cheaper watch from the Presage collection - I don't think it has anything to do with cost.

Good for you, I have one too, I put an aftermarket quality bracelet on mine, I love it. I have a 7.5 inch wrist and it looks better than the smaller ones on me, certainly. Everything lines up and the dial and crystal are just sublime. I’m getting about 1 second slow per day, over a 5 day period and that’s within Rolex Cosc parameters. I prefer the Zaratsu polishing on mine to the SPB143. It’s one of the few watches I will keep forever. I do fancy the SPB143, but the quality doesn’t appear to be as good as the SPB053.

Nice watch, but I would expect a better movement for the price. I would rather a Borealis/Zelos/NTH, or RLG for less than half the price

I think the market rate is right around $1000. Although I paid full price for my SPB149 LE because I was born in the same month and year as the original 62MAS so I had to have the 55th Anniversary Limited Edition, even at full retail. And yes, I think it's the ultimate Seiko diver. Love mine. The fit is perfection and on wrist it runs 0spd since I got it back in October of 2020. Zero complaints except for the clasp which I simply replaced with one minus the dive extension for a better fit. Enough with the signed crown complaints. I have NEVER cared about a signed crown. Who looks at the crown for chrissake? If it's signed, great. If it isn't, also great. Ya know who signs all their crowns? Orient. And yet the crowns on just about all of their divers suck. Too small and poor of a grip, and no amount of signing it is gonna change that. The SPB143 has a nicely brushed crown that beautifully evokes the brushing of the case and the insert. It works perfectly too with no backspin required to thread it.

Great video as always Jody but would it kill Seiko to work in some nice touches like a fully lumed ceramic bezel, signed crown, a milled divers extension within the main clasp, an on the fly micro adjust and some bloody articulated end links!!?? Seriously, if micro brands can do it AND for less money AND with better QC then WHY can't a giant like Seiko do it and destroy the competition at the same time??? Just saying.....

I prefer an unsigned crown. Signed crowns never line up perfectly and look partially unscrewed. That bothers me.

I once was really infatuated with this and was choosing between this and the Captain Willard because I really like that square/baton indices and rectangular hand look on a watch. However after I tried them on in a boutique and with the introduction of the Traska Commuter and Christopher Ward's C63 Automatic (I know both of them are not diver's, but I was looking for a dark/black dialled sports watch) I really have fallen out of love of the two Seikos. The end link was one of niggles that I had with this piece as well.

People really get blinded by brands and marketing. Okay heritage is cool but if you are making 1k watches with dust on the dial that heritage means jack shit when others are doing better for much less 😂

@@SWatchik Perhaps, but are these companies really making a „better watch“ (timeless, original design, not a stand-in for a more expensive watch, etc.), or are they simply improving specific parts of the watch (end links, clasp, bezel), with the end result only being the sum of its parts, and nothing more? A 40 year old Sub is still considered a great watch, despite being technically not much better than an SKX. On the other hand, I can’t see anyone still wearing their Helm Vanuatu in 40 year’s time, as it is decently made, but a forgettable design from a forgettable brand.

@@hubertuswolfthaler I mean you could argue the same for almost any new watch made by any brand. There are very few iconic timeless watches, but that doesn't mean say something like the Zenith defy 21 for example isn't a bad watch or even a better watch in some aspects than its competition. It probably won't age well but that's a different thing altogether

@@hubertuswolfthaler Unlike Seiko, Rolex made improvements to that 40 yr old design,A modern Submariner is a much better watch than the original. A new SKX still has all the faults of the original, and Seiko's lack of quality control means the new ones are made worse than the originals.

I do think the SPB143 is Seiko’s ‘ultimate’ dive watch when you factor everything in, and I think it’s become quite an iconic model now during its relatively short run time. The OG version with no lume index at the 3 is the best, and now that it’s likely to be discontinued with the release of the next gen I think it’ll garner a bit of cult status.

I was wondering when this would get posted. I have owned several divers, and the one I think i have owned that is most similar in feel was the Christopher Ward Trident C60 38mm. It’s cliche, but I couldn’t stand the name. My worst complaint about the SBDC101: I’m wearing a $1100 Seiko. I’m still on the fence about keeping my SBDC101, as I find it a bit too heavy and borderline big for my 17.5cm wrist. And the bracelet is uncomfortable at the edge of the divers extension. It’s not a great bracelet, but I think it’s more comfortable than the bracelet on the Halios Fairwind. I wish the Halios had the diashield coating that the SBDC101 has. The bracelet finishing really looks good. Good watch though. Thanks for the review, Jody:) (now I too wish I had gone with my gut and gone down the SPB185)

I really loved my SPB147 with the cappuccino gilt dial. It ran like sh!t out of the box, around -30 s/d?! I ended up regulating the watch myself and it then holds a consistent +1 to +2 s/d. Much better! It's a near perfect Seiko diver that does not require any mod to get the design/look up to spec, imho. Could use a signed crown, however. Btw, the bezel was actually perfectly aligned, too. These are pretty much Seiko's equivalent to a Tudor BB58. Agree, the original 62mas never had a bracelet and what they have here isn't quite the perfect match at the end links.. and, it is slightly loose as u showed. Not crazy loose, but certainly could have been better with a tighter tolerance fit. You may noticed I said loved at the beginning. Correction, it really is still love. But, I sold it. Why if I said near perfect? Quick answer, I'm trying to keep collection small and unfortunately only 1 Seiko is required. As such, I wanted a Seiko diver that better represented modern Seiko design attributes.. 4 O'Clock crown and a more unique design language. Sure, these are uniquely Seiko 62mas inspired. However, it does feel a little safe as well as covers a broader range of early 60s dive watch designs. This, I sold it and opted to keep a new 43mm "mini Tuna" instead. I'd say that new 42mm mm200 u have and the like would have met the criteria, as well.

I really wanted to love this watch. I bought it and sold it twice. The dial and case size is perfect but the inaccuracy of the movement and subpar bracelet (pin and collar, uncomfortable diver’s extension) are rather unforgivable at this US$1k-ish price point.

It's a doddle to regulate the 6R35. All you need is a timegrapher and a phone app like the Android WatchCheck to evaluate daily gain/loss over a few days to a week. If there is daily consistency you should be able to hone it in to zero to +3 seconds gain per day average.
@GabrielTan1980

@@Laz_Arus having to regulate a $1k Seiko for better accuracy is like having to buy a $20k Toyota and having to tune it for better fuel efficiency. Yes it can be done aftermarket but that should be the job of the manufacturer.
