A very interesting segment mate. The electric charge differences in medium types is new to me. I've put a couple of broms into inorganic mix..even temporarily, and they hated it. They looked underfed, paled out and dry..even with watering. So absolutely true!

Mike, on the flip side, I knew a dedicated Vriesea collector who only used a lava rock substrate and swore by it, said he never experienced any problems.

I have used lava scoria too..I guess it depends on climate and position.

I make some charcoal with the orchid mix last year. Everything that I replanted died.

I mix them. Putting in around 30% coco peat or peat moss in a mineral mix. Some biochar helps with CEC as well.

Thanks for the tip... do you use this combination for all of your broms or only specific genera?

@@islandbreezetropicals1276 my Dyckias are in that mix. I also grow my dragonfruit cacti, medjool palm in it. The recipe is: 35% Coir or peat 30% pumice 20% perlite 10% sand 5% biochar (activated) You might be able to buy it premade under the name " Garys top pot". Personally I make it myself.

I find cryptanthus root easily when you keep them in a water tray for wet feet.

Thank you very much Ford the experiment. But ley me understand some: you told us that bromelias did not sustente herselves in the médium, that it is mostly to fix them not fot the nourishiment, so I think I do not understand very well this information you are giving us, sorry…

I agree, I thought you could mount a bromeliad on a rock or driftwood.
