Nice to see you back on KZbin! I already feared that you stopped posting material from your long walk home. But there you are 🤗 I have only one tent and a (special) bivvy bag. They work in all weather conditions and are actually suited for expeditions. At least the tent is not really lightweight (2.8 kg with pegs and groundsheet) - but how helpful is a tent that collapses or soaks water like a sponge. I therefore save some weight in other areas and at the end it works for me. Already looking forward to any news from you!

It's a shame because I'm so short and quite light, for thru hiking it's reccomeded you carry 20-25% of your body weight max, so I cant really go higher than 13/14kg including water and food, which usually makes 6kg of the pack. It's such a hard game to play..., I swapped her out for the hubba nx1 which is 1.1kg and worked wonders x

MSR gets bad press about not being able withstand high winds, but I used my Hubba Solo for years with no problem. Definitely more confident with the MSR than my Nemo Osmo Hornet Elite 2p. The Nemo is definitely a fair weather friend!

I bought this last year in time for a summer wild camp where I was going ultralightweight. I invested a lot of money into lightweight pack, bag, etc, including this amazingly light tent. It is technically brilliant and completely waterproof (including the floor). BUT I spent most nights awake staring up at the poles as the wind hammered against it. The first evening it collapsed in on itself. No damage ,thankfully. It never did it again but I was careful to always pitch it into the prevailing wind and pray it didn't change. It was the Lake District, which is rough even in summer. This year it's the Rhinogs and I'm seriously considering taking my 4-season Terra Nova Southern Cross 2. It's a lot heavier, but I value a good night's sleep when hillwalking!

Update - I took my Southern Cross 2. Generally fine weather but the windy times made me glad I brought it and not the Nemo. Plus it got quite chilly in the small hours before dawn and I would have been pretty cold in the Nemo. My Southern Cross 2 will now be my main tent (amongst several) when I'm not hammocking.

MSR Hubba NX got me through the WHW in some awful weather, full on Scottish weather. No leaks and survived some stormy highland winds in Glen Coe. Yes it was a few grams over 1kg but it was reassuring to have a good well tested tent that didn't let me down. Ther is always going to be a compromise when you're trying to save weight.

Can I ask when you bought your Hubba? The reason I ask is that MSR are currently on version 7, so what you have may not be what I've just bought. Which, incidentally, let water in both at the top and the bottom during a rainy night's test pitch in my garden with nobody in it.

Good video. I always take reviews with a pinch of salt when I'm watching tent reviews by US based Hikers. I've stuck with my Hubba because it does well in wind and rain, a lot better than a lot of the trendy ultralight tents.

I have the Nemo Hornet OSMO 1P (not elite) and agree with everything you say. It really is a fair-weather tent. I've only ever used mine with a Polycro (30g) groundsheet so not had any leakage personally. The tiny velcro pole attachments are useless, I'm still looking for ways to beef them up so they at least stay fastened, and the guylines can do their job properly.

I have/had (now the seams are no longer properly sealed due to the glue coming off over time) a Wechsel Pathfinder 1P. It is almost 3 times the weight but I did 8 months and almost 18000km on a bicycle across Europe, and did not regret having it. I started off on the 1st of March 2019 from South West Germany and went westwards across France. Two weeks (give or take) of almost constant rain and wind (I had to push my bicycle DOWNHILL!) and never got wet inside. The next big rain hit I had to endure was in Galicia, where you will get so drenched on top of the bicycle that you can just squeeze your fist in the glove and it will leak like a hose. The tent survived. Went across Southern Europe (Spain, France, Central Italy) with all that sun. During the crossing between Czech Republic and Poland my thermometer was showing around 40+ deg Celcius in the sun. On my way across Central Sweden and then South Norway - rain. A friend of mine swears by the Nemo Hornet 2P (not Elite!). However, I am not sure how much it endures for long periods of exposure to bad weather. He has only had short trips with it. The truly decent tent starts to shine when you have to live in it for days, weeks and even months in a row enduring the elements. Thanks for the review. I love hearing from people, who actually have actively tested the product and are not just paid to promote it (probably 99.9% of all KZbin and otherwise reviews on the Internet). Much appreciated!

Wow, I did not expect that price tag. It's got some nice little design bits though. I'm not sure I'll ever have an inner first tent in the UK though, I've had too many unpleasant surprises with the bloody weather! This is only the second video I've seen of someone absolutely rinsing a tent. I think iirc the first was Haze Outdoors. Good to see as I'm much less trusting of brands these days.

You have to be careful with US designs - they're often aimed at sheltered camping in the woods in dry climates. Safer to go with Scottish or Scandinavian brands unless you really know what you're looking for. At a minimum you need: 1) Outer-first pitching - inner-first like the Hornet is a nightmare in heavy rain 2) A deep bathtub with fabric that's beefy enough to pitch in a bog 3) A sheltered entrance that doesn't drip into the living area when you open the door for venting, cooking and exiting 4) A fly that can be pegged low to the ground - 20d minimum for 3 season, and 30d for 4 season 5) A structure designed to take 40 mph+ winds. With a freestanding design, you simply ain't going to get all that for 600 grams. The low weight is seductive, but there's light and then there's stupid light. A freestanding double-skinned tent that can take exposed UK wild-camping is simply going to weigh more than that, and we just have to suck it up.

used a Nemo galaxy 2p for about 6 or 7 years and its a brilliant tent ,its a heavier tent but like you said Nemo have brilliant designs to make pack backing comfortable and easy ,last couple years ive used a zpacks duplex ive had that in pretty high winds and with it being dcf its 100% waterproof

Great review Beca. Totally fair and based on real world experience. I've looked at the Nemo (and Big Agnes) tents before as a lightweight option but have always had reservations. I live in the Pacific Northwest, west of the cascade mountains. We have similar weather. I never purchased a Nemo because the rain fly doesn’t cover the bathtub on the ends. Which in our weather, water would splash up, making a miserable experience. I have seen some videos since that lightweight Nemo’s are not suited for moderate to heavy rain.

Great video, thanks for making it. I really think Nemo went too far with the Elite versions of these tents. The regular versions are only a few ounces more and use more robust materials as I understand it. There is really a use case for a tent like this but it's not for 99.9% of people and I think it is unfortunate how it has been marketed, especially where you live. In the western U.S. where I am, we can go weeks or even months without rain. While we do get strong winds it is less frequent and often more predictable so it would be appropriate in some cases here, like bug protection and insurance from an unexpected storm, but I'd use some type of ground sheet 100% of the time to avoid punctures. I guess that's where Dyneema tents shine. Quite robust, waterproof, light, and of course even more expensive. Unfortunately not enough free standing, wind worthy designs as of now. I'm looking forward to checking out more of your content.

1200 mm hydrostatic head on a groundsheet or fly sheet is not something that I would have any confidence in. I’m pretty sure from my GoOutdoor days that to pass a definition of waterproof 1000 mm is the threshold. The Nemo barely scrapes over the bar! 3000mm is my starting point.

I bought the last version, and my dad loved how LITE it felt in his hands so bought one for himself before doing a chunk of the PCT. Then we both realized how much this tent sucked ass. Fortunately I learned this the relatively easier way, when I put a hole in the mesh simply by... holding it while pitching the tent. I then proceeded to put more holes than trips in the tent (3 to 2). Two of the holes were repaired when I sent it back, the third was returned from the shop "repaired" but tore immediately on pitching the tent in my living room. My poor dad learned the worse of this tent's suckage while on the PCT: that the bathtub is not water proof, nor is it water resistant, and in fact it becomes an actual bathtub after two days of rain. THIS TENT SHOULD NOT BE USED FOR ANYTHING MORE THAN A BUG NET (if you're okay with the occasional bug getting through due to the holes you'll make during the normal setup process)

Physics dictates that performance and weight are exclusive. A UK 4 season 2 man tent will weigh over 2kg, otherwise there is not enough Al poles or sufficiently strong materials and guy points.

For wet weather a tent which you have to pitch inner first is useless as it will get soaked if pitching in the rain I have a vango and can’t fault it, pitch the outer first , climb in and attach the inner and reverse to pack up

The floor sounds like a manufacturing issue, and definitely not normal. If you send it in they’ll either fix the waterproofing or more likely recycle it and provide a new tent. That said, you live in a super windy country why would you think an ultralight tent was a good idea? If you get extreme winds throughout the year you need a 4 season tent. It’s not a temp rating, it measures the tents ability to withstand wind and snow. For the people seeing this review

Just my tuppenceworth. Trying not to generalise, but having climbed and camped in Scotland for 40 years .........I'd avoid most US stuff. Different market, made for different conditions. MSR and TNF have some good Euro specific offerings, but mainstream stuff like Hille, Terra Nova, f10, Lightwave, Nordisk and even Robens kit is much safer for UK. I've tried for decades to get that one exception to a super/lightweight but "robust" tent. Lasercomp is as close as I got, but even then ....... Take care and enjoy your outdoors.

She posted about this on her insta, but basically she never got an answer from nemo, the company she bought it from said it was never returned (but she paid for extra tracking and showed proof of signature) so the company she bought it from refunded her.

I live in NW Washington state where it rains A LOT. We get snow, rain, wind, pretty much every type of weather you can think of and I have had zero problems with mine. Also just finished the PCT with this tent and had no issues. I’m also 6’-4” and fit great in mine. So not sure what you are complaining about. Nemo has been a great company to buy from and I would buy it again in a heartbeat.

I've now got a Nordisk telemark pu 2.2....not properly tested it out, but it could be an option seam sealed from the factory as compared to the Lw( which is not ) one plus its stronger material and cheaper ......

Had the previous hornet, looks like the weight saving on this one has compromised it a lot. Did however have an issue with the bug net being so thin, managed to get a tare far too easily. I find these ultralight tents are just way too fragile to be shedding out hundreds of pounds on them. You're extremely lucky whoever you purchased it from is even entertaining the thought of refunding you after using it for 3 weeks. Joys of being a youtuber n not a regular consumer I guess

Hiya lovely, I jsut wanted to clarify that they didn't know I had a KZbin or an Instagram, I sent them a lot of footage about the leaking bathtub and it collapsing in mild wind (accidentslly deleted that footage so couldn't put it on this video) but I'm not someone to try and blackmail a company... The tent was clearly misold as suitable for the uk summer season, and it was not, that's why they gave a refund... Sorry to hear you weren't able to get one for your nemo that ripped though. @@muddy_bootlaces thanks for the clarification but I feel I should point out that at no point did I accuse you of trying to blackmail anybody here. I didn't make a warranty claim on mine, I don't think rips are covered, especially since it was me who caused it, was nothing a patch couldn't fix. Plus I bought mine 2nd hand and I believe you need to provide proof of purchase for a UK claim. What I was primarily trying to get across is that if my older, slightly heavier version was so fragile, I don't trust that this new, lighter and even thinner osmo range would be any better. Don't get me wrong tho, my hornet served me well in some wild conditions, had no issues with rain or even waking in over half a foot of snow one morning but it did struggle with wind in exposed areas. I sold mine a while back and have had a couple of tents since then. Weight is important when trekking but it comes to a point where a tent is just too light to be able to perform, especially 2-3 season (UK summer) camping. Apologies, I clearly ramble in more ways than one. Hopefully that made sense and caused no further offence

Shame really. As you say, a lot of thought has gone into the design but, ultimately, the materials appear to be too light to support the design. I recognise a lot of design features from my go-to 1-person tent, the MSR Freelite 1. Of course, that's a fair bit heavier at 1.29kg (including the MSR footprint.

Indepth review of the 1P version - am looking to get the 2P for bikepacking. So yeah, good and some worryingly not so good results. Think the latter may be due to moisture condensate from temperature differences between the cooler, outside air and ground, and the warmer environment inside - aided further by expelled, moist breathing. Is the tent properly ventilated? I know my MSR Hubba Hubba is, and holds up well in rain and moisture-laden wind - campsites near large inland water bodies like ponds and lakes, in the latter's case. Aren't you supposed to put a ground sheet underneath the tent. Maybe that would reduce the water. Also i don't think you should leave the fly door open at night. If you want to reduce condensation, open the mesh door a bit.

Might aswelll buy a tent that's cheaper and a little heavier, but waterproof if that's the case... I think for the price tag the point she is making is that you shouldn't have to buy all the expensive heavy extras to make it work x

A good polite review, however it’s not up to standard. If you can afford it look at getting a tent that is up to such a trip, the Hilleberg range would have one that would fit your needs like an Akto or Anaris, Niak or Rogen. Love your journey and updates, such an inspiration, all the best.😊👍

Akto is a great tent but it's WAY heavier, has a significantly larger footprint and well-documented problems with condensation. Don't get me wrong - I've had one for years and still love it.

Tbh, manufacturers, vendors and users need to get away from using 2/3/4 season as descriptions. It's essentially meaningless as a description, especially without a location. Appreciate your opinion but I have to say after nearly 1000miles in my osmo your not treating yours correctly mine has been spectacular even coming from a Chinese version (Amazon) of the tent I do appreciate your positives on the tent. However there a reason it’s one of the most popular tents on any trails I’ve read or heard about granted nothing is perfect but I’ve had mine in up to 50mph (43knots) winds with zero issues in a tornado prone bad weather area. Again very much appreciate your opinions but my experience has been exactly the opposite I’m sorry you’ve had issues with your kit.

Were you planning on elaborating how she wasn't 'using hers correctly'? I accompanied Beca on this section of her LeJog, both of us being seasoned hikers since our teens. I assure you, I've never seen such a failure of a high price point tent - in fact of pretty much any tent. It straight up leaked and bowed alarmingly in just the breeze. Now, this might well have been pure manufacturing error seeing as the tent design was relatively new at the time, but the utter lack of correspondence (let alone support) from Nemo on the matter was really the biggest failure here.

First time I've heard someone genderise a tent 🤣 Seems a really big rip off. Totally agree with your points at the end 10:45 - get her sent back... I hope you got a full refund. I like that you weren't blinded by your anticipation of getting it. I sometimes realise I should return things but it's often too late :S

I guess my inherent contempt for inner-first pitching tents has spared me, since I refused to purchase a backpacking tent with that design flaw, leading me to resist purchasing a Nemo backpacking tent since they all seem to share that design flaw. I did do some camping in pretty heavy rain... with a tarp + bivy. That was pretty comfortable, to be honest. Sorry that you ended up buying one only to have such an unpleasant experience though 😕

Ah cheers buddy yeah I find some inner tents are OK, like the msr is so quick to put up I don't mind. But the nemo was just trash, I really hope you have better luck x
