7:00 worth saying that a lot of houses cover up asbestos soffit board with UPVC so be carefull when drilling through. Sometimes the give away that possible asbestos soffits have just been covered over is small nails in the UPVC fascia.

I had the same thought, given the age of the property it is very likely that this was the case, particularly serious if AIB was used rather than AC, high asbestos content, very friable. Otherwsie a very tidy install job. Would never want to do this without checking. At work, it is a Health and Safety offence, under HASAWA and Control of Asbestos Regulations.

10mm 3 core SWA is rated to 73amps so you'll be sweet. Even allowing diversity for the sockets and lights. Could have gone 4.0mm at 42amps

I have one of the Little Giant multi-foldy-ladder things, it's heavy but great. 1.7m ladder, fits in the back of my Landie, fits through a doorway, extends out to nearly 6m. Love it. Bit bendy at full stretch though.

Think the only thing I would have done differently is way overspec the feed cable to the garage. But that is because I just wanted lighting and place to charge batteries (4mm) at first few years later I had to upgrade to 16mm to run a welder occasionally along with a freezer and bunch of other 240V tools

4mm2 for lighting and sockets to charge power tools is already quite big. Would normally be 2.5mm radial at 20A. 16mm2 is used up to 80A as a main supply for the whole property. You must have a massive welder!

@@tobysherring1369 the garage is 100 metres away from the supply and was recommended for that length of run to run 4mm, also what I didn't mention was that standard 2core 2.5 was in place for 6months and when pulled from the duct there was signs of heating up like yellowing and cracking of the gray insulation. 16mm was just to future proof it. Welder I have has been converted from 3phase to single phase and liked to trip the 30amp breaker it was on during heavy use

Fact is he could run a welder, a kettle and a compressor at the same time off this cable as long as the EV isn't being charged at the same time. If installing the Zappi, it has room for multiple CTs (one is always used as an overall grid CT) but you can set an extra CT to monitor the load on the garage circuit and set the current limit to let's say 40A - if it senses a high current device it will curtail the charge.

You can grab your multimeter and measure the resistance of the wire to figure out it's length. Just have to look up the resistance for the size of wire you're using. Edit: 10.00 mm2 - 1.91 ohm/km = 0.00191 ohm/m

I assume your refering to the bit through the loft? If so then its above the ceiling joists and as such they provide adequate support for the cable in the event of a fire causing its clips to fail. The requirement is that in the event of a fire the cables don't fall on people escaping which they won't unless the entire ceiling structure has failed in which case a small armoured cable will be the least of anyones worry. Its a bit different if it were a suspended ceiling in a commercial application as these are far more likely to collapse. In most houses the cables run across the back of the ceiling joists and it doesn't matter what sort of clip you use, if the ceiling joists burn through to the point of collapse the clips are irrelevant.

We live in a house built in 1908 with no cavity, all these cables were the source of damp in my living room. They had drip loops on the bottom but it was the water running down the cables which was penetrating the wall all the way down. Stripped them all off, damp problem solved.
