I was very surprised; I halfway expected the Fender to sound better but it's actually got a muddy sound. I was give a Silvertone 1483 bass head many years ago and it sounds great!

@analogemma and, keep in mind that our silvertone amplifiers were likely hand soldered and at the very least point-to-point soldered circuits. And like your Silvertone amp, my 1483 has been used for guitar, voice, and synths. I recently purchased a pair of Fender rumble 40 bass amps, and after replacing the original speakers they sound very good!

Hi Emma. When I met John Jorgenson years ago with the Hellecasters he strongly recommended getting a Matchless SC 30. I saved up for one for about 6 years and ordered one. i still have it 25 years later. I recommend to all your viewers trying one. The sensitivity and response is quite fantastic. I sold my JCM 800 and mint original 1965 Fender Super Reverb amps both in showroom condition. Thanks Respect to all❤

The Princeton certainly sounds "more professional", a more solid tone with plenty of bass. The Silvertone sounds trashy -- but some of us like that. As others have mentioned, an external speaker and/or EQ could transform the tone of the Silvertone (well actually, either one). One important factor to me is, the Princeton likely has more negative feedback in its circuit design. This can end up leading to the user subconsciously "fighting" it to get more edge. The Silvertone will have a natural nastiness due to less feedback; thus, the cleans may not be as clean, but again, to some ears, that's a good thing. NFB can act to reduce the "tubeyness" of the sound and make it more "hi-fi", which I guess Leo Fender liked but it's not my preference. I'd say, work with the Silvertone, try other speaker cabinets and perhaps a graphic EQ, it'll probably surprise you with how many new tones it can produce.
@analogemma7 ай бұрын
Great point there, and yea I think both would be great in a mix in different places
@marsmediaproАй бұрын
I so disagree. The Fender sounds muddy, the Silvertone shimmers.
@satanbaneАй бұрын
@@marsmediapro You disagree with what? Maybe my use of the word "trashy" made it sound like I didn't like the Silvertone? Not at all, to me the right kind of "trashy" can be a good thing. I guess saying that it "shimmers" sounds a little more elegant, but I think we're actually responding positively to the same acoustic qualities.

They both sound good! Just different. I can see where the Silvertone could punch through a mix and not muddy up the bass but also that Fender sounds really good on its own but might get lost on stage. I own a 1967 Danelectro D50 with three 10” Jensen speakers which is kinda related to your Silvertone.

The average Sears Silvertone 1482 is more then $400, double that number for realistic pricing today and then add a basic servicing at the very least and tubes on top of that if truly needed. Great video otherwise, subscribed. Personally I'd take the 1482.

That's interesting. I had heard that Norman Greenbaum has often tried to replicate the overdrive he got on the recording of ""Spirit in the Sky", but he can't remember what equipment he used, and can't replicate it. When you played that Princeton I immediately thought of that overdrive (fuzz perhaps) tone. So I wonder if that's what he originally used??? I think he used a Tele as well.

Switch the speaker, 90% of the tone is the speaker. Try a greenback celestion on a Jensen. Otherwise it's mostly EQ (10 cents capacitors/resistor) in the preamp. Or you put a pedal in front and play with the tone /eq. Btw, a Peavey rage sound way better, what people seek is mostly the vintage look. Try it, make a video of the vintage amp but actually mic a cheap 15w Peavey amp
