People who call out small watches are compensating for being small in other aspects. 33mm dress watch from the late 90s is the smallest watch I own, and I love that I can wear a full gold watch without worrying about getting mugged.

That's so idiotic argument,we are not all Frodo with glass wrists.I am 6.4 with 8.5 inch wrist and even my MM300 looks rather smallish on my wrist,human kind is getting bigger and fatter due to all the hormones and additives in our food.

Great video and perspective. BTW congrats on your new home. I am in the process of moving to a new home this week. So my watch hopes and dreams are on standby with all the costs of moving. The more I see this BB54 the more I want one. I love the thin profile. That's one of my biggest needs in a watch. I'm thinking it wears a slight bigger than my Explorer 36mm. I know it's a smaller watch. I don't mind and I prefer smaller watches. My Speedy and Seiko Turtle are my biggest watches, but I have a 7 inch wrist. So I'm blessed to be able to wear many different sizes. This BB54 looks like a everyday do anything keeper. Low profile, versatile, more low key than the BB58. If Tudor went this far with a throwback design? What's next? The only wish I have for another BB54 would be non-gilt dial, or a navy blue dial/bezel. I think if I had the money to buy one on the spot, and still focused on getting a Reverso, & a Rolex Submariner 14060. I think I would pull the trigger and buy it.

I just fell that they've stripped back some small touches that made the BB58 so great, the minute track and the red triangle, it just looks plain boring to me, unless you're after a homage to the OG 1954 release I suppose. I have a blue BB58 and the 41 Heritage, and trying on the 54 for me it was too small, maybe it was my eyesight 🤣. I'm now burnt out with homages now, come on Tudor let's start looking forward again! Look, it's really down to wrist size and what fits the wrist best, there is no right or wrong watch. I had a Rolex Datejust 36mm, and in the watch box it looked too small, but in isolation and once it was on the wrist it was fine. I still sold it though and bought a Tudor LHD Pelagos🤣🤣

Putting aside the sizing, I prefer the 54 for it’s more simplified aesthetic vs the 58. I think it’s cleaner without the minute marks and the white/silver bezel vs the gilt. It’s interesting how these touches resonate one way or another with people. I don’t particularly care about homage, I just like that we get a vintage aesthetic with modern specs and, for me personally, a better size.

My smallest watch is a 37mm Aquastar DeepStar 2 skindiver. I find 37mm is a happy medium between 36mm & 38mm for my 6.5 inch wrist. Sometimes I find some 36mm or 38mm watches can wear smaller or larger than what they area.

I like the 54 quite a bit and found it to wear larger than expected. The smallest watches in my collection that I wear regularly are a 28mm Aquadive 1924, 34mm Squale No Radiobino and a 31mm Tudor 90910. I have a 6 3/4” wrist and also regularly wear 42-44mm watches up to my 53mm Aquadive Time Depth. I find specs don’t always define the wearing experience.

I think it looks great and fits your wrist well. Watch size is always completely subjective and entirely up to the wearer. What may be too small for one person is okay for another and so on. I'm glad Tudor have taken this route and given options to their customers. I'm considering one for my 17cm wrist. My current daily wear is a 2002 SMP300 (40mm). Weekend usually my TAG Pro200 (40mm). My smaller watches tend to be for office or dress. I wear a 36mm Longines VHP (apparently ladies, but it fits great + I love the tech). I've also got a Gold 34mm 1970 Garrard Eterna for dress. Love them all, and equally like my chunky G-Shock Rangeman and Casio AE2100 if I'm out on my bike etc. Wear whatever makes you happy, and wear it in good health.

This is my opinion for this very cool subject: I have a family heirloom Rolex 6538 but will never wear it in the wild. As a matter of fact it is in a safe in a vault. I bought 5-digit sub back in 05-06 and still love it to this day and will always be in my rotation, but I also wanted to wear something vintage but there was nothing out there until the first Blackbay back in I guess 2010s some time. In hopes it would feel like the 6538, I found it was not and did not wear like it. 2018 comes around and the BB58 arrives. The BB58 wears almost exactly the same as a Rolex 6538. The BB58 is 39mm x 11.9mm in height x 47mm lug to lug and a lug width of 20mm. The crown is 6-6.5mm. The Rolex 6538 is 38mm x 15.2mm in height due to the doomed x 47mm lug to lug and a lug width of 20mm. The crown is I believe 8mm last I checked. I tried the BB54 and it was an awesome watch! Love the fit and feel but also did not fit like a 6538 at all which makes sense because it is a nod to an older vintage but even then it is it’s own thing as the vintage it is based off of is larger lug to lug and thickness. So the BB54 does not wear like a vintage but it wears very different in a good way. For me I wanted something like the 6538 and the BB58 is my preferred. Specifically, the Gilt dial. I think depending on which vintage you like most would determine which you prefer. Another option is simply owning both the BB58 and 54. For me I am waiting for 2028. I have a feeling they will make some refinements with the original BB58. They will make changes with the gnarling on the bezel and crown and may shrink it down to 38mm. Now that is a watch worth waiting for in my opinion. But no one would be wrong to own that nice BB54.

I had the opportunity to borrow it for a few days, and I REALLY like it. It's like the 6-digit Rolex OP34 (or 36) which wears a little larger than the measurements suggest. Having sufficient time to wear & examine it, my criticisms are: There are too many texts on the dial. The Geneve & Officially Certified lines are not necessary, IMO. I would also like to see a larger crown. The clasp is a bit too big/bulky IMO, a little bit out of proportion relative to the nicely tapering, vintage style bracelet.

I know small is in trend , but when a big wrist guy tries to rave about how cool this watch is , I just wanna gently remind the importance of proportion. It’s like a small wrist man trying to wear omega PO 43.5 and insists it’s perfect . The point is that the watch may be perfect, but may not be the case when it is on you. Don’t bring the past into the discussion. The past doesn’t have 38-40mm to know that they fit best for most male wrist

It is a shame Tudor did not go for the drilled lugs on the 54. Now that would have been something. Seems societal tastes are changing regarding watch size trending toward smaller. For a good long time everything was huge at 43+mm or larger. I too have small wrists and cannot pull those off. That said, 40mm seems to be the sweet spot for me. i love the look of the 54 but would have to see it in the metal and try it one before committing to a purchase. I recently picked up a 38mm chrono from Nivada Gretchen and like its traditional throwback looks but I really do not wear it much due to its size. Back in the day I owned a 36mm SS Rolex Datejust I wore every day to work for over 20 years. That watch is small by today's standards yet that was the quintessential man's luxury watch in the late 80s and 90s. .

I don't think the BB54 is too small, but too small for some people. That some people includes me, but I am significantly taller than average. I thought maybe it's not too small when I first tried it on (on rubber strap), but then I saw it in the mirror and realized the proportions are all off on me. As one of my other watch friends said, it looked like I was wearing a toy watch and he was right. The rubber strap/T-fit is brilliant though. The good thing about Tudor is they have the Black Bay in a variety of sizes. The new 41mm Black Bay diver is really nice and the reduced thickness takes it from a no to go maybe I should get one. Really though, the Tudor Pelagos 39 is the most brilliant on my wrist. Just ever so slightly better proportions than the Black Bay 58 *for me* and it feels like a vintage Sub (tried one on recently). If they come out with a blue Pelagos 39, I might not be able to keep my wallet shut. The smallest watch in my collection is a 38mm dressy field watch with minimal bezel and largest is 44.5mm.
@Escapement24
@Escapement24 Жыл бұрын
I think you just nailed it there - size is relative and it's about what you feel works for you. BTW I'm in complete agreement on the Pelagos 39. I tried that on again when at the AD to film the BB54 and I like it equally, even though they're different watches with the P39 being much more of a tool watch. If it had the T-Fit clasp on the rubber strap and the price difference wasn't so great I'd find it hard to choose between the two.

I only wear watches that are at max 38 mm or below that. Seiko SNXS73 37 mm, Omega Aqua Terra 38 mm, Rado 34 mm. I’m on the list for the 54 and an OP36. I’m a gym dude with bigger forearms but relatively small wrists 6.6 inches. I mean I could go for 41-42 mm watches but it always feels like they’re wearing me instead of i am wearing it. A lot of guys with wristsizes between 16-17cm should go for smaller watches in my opinion.

Some great pieces in the collection 👋 In terms of size it's what feels right to you. Size can also be deceptive too which is why it's so important to try them on. For example I've got a 46mm watch that's a lugless design and wears fine for me even on my skinny wrists (wears more like a 41 actually) and that Studio Underd0g I referred to in the video definitely wears smaller than 38.5

There are those who seem to be desperately overcompensating by hating on smaller watches, perhaps because of simple lack of confidence, or some other feeling of inadequacy - anatomical or otherwise - I wouldn’t know. They’re easy to spot because they use terms like “girl’s watch” or “that’s for boys wrists” usually followed by an emoji feigning humour…and they seem to have a high correlation with driving an Audi or BMW for some reason 🤔 The fact is those large wrists are actually lucky in being able to wear ANY size of watch - it’s purely a style choice - whereas those with smaller wrists can find large watches very uncomfortable, impractical or impossible to wear. No-one should “hate” a 37mm watch just because it’s case is 37mm in diameter. After all there’s plenty of choice elsewhere in the Tudor range if what you want is large and slab-sided 👍

In reality big watches are a new trend since 2005ish. I have a 7 inch wrist and anything large that's disproportioned in case design looks goofy to me. Many people go by what they see online and jump on large watches w/out wearing it first. Most guys go by width size. The real difference is lug to lug, the length of a watch. I always tell my friends. What makes a watch large and unwearable is the length size and the thickness (top heavy). If you have small wrists but like large watches. Stick to shot lug to lug case designs. Like Panerai, or Seiko Turtle... Wide large watches yes, but lug to lug they don't overhang small wrists. There's also case proportions. IMO look at how goofy a 40mm Rolex Date Just or Day Dates look. To me they look like cheap knock-offs. Some watches are meant to be classic sized.

As a member of the aristocratic-wristed, I'm excited about the BB54, and want one myself. I want it on the rubber strap as well. The watch I wear the most is a Citizen Promaster diver on rubber. I have "nicer" watches, but the rubber means I don't have to take it off to shower or sleep or jump in the pool. I was looking at the Seamaster on rubber and the Oris Aquis on rubber, but I was worried that the larger cases would take away some of that comfort, or worse, come off as "too sporty." So, I'd love to get a chance to upgrade the Promaster into a "nicer" watch, without giving up convenience.

Citizen make some great watches! I've got the square titanium Promaster and the new Tsoyosa is on the way to review on the channel. Like you I generally prefer watches with rubber straps for the comfort factor.

@@Escapement24 I've been dying to get a Seamaster for a while, so I may try the Citizen Fujitsubo/barnacle for a rubber strap option before the BB54, just to spare some coin. There are just too many options to chose from currently. lol. Nice video! You've earned a sub from me. Cheers!

Hmm....that is the current challenge, though my AD says that Tudor has significantly increased production since opening the new factory and thinks the wait for a 54 is only likely to be 2-3 months. Hope that helps and good luck 🤞

@@Escapement24 my AD said the same, should be around September before I can get one. I love it on the rubber by the way, the bracelet felt too much if a vintage feel. The rubber gives it a modern feel with a little vintage.

You've convinced me to subscribe. After all, one needs to support the community and the ones ( like yourself ) who show others what's out there. Personally, I love the new BB 54, the size is perfect for one like myself, who has only a 6-inch wrist. That's why I love my Tissot PRX 35mm. Yes, your right gender doesn't matter in watches. It's what feels and looks like that matters. Would I buy one if I had the chance to absolutely. However, not being a fan of rubber straps it would stay on the bracelet. Great unbiased review and video. I look forward to seeing more content. Kind regards from Australia, Rikki.

Hey Joe. As I think I said elsewhere in the comments, if you've got the 58 then there's no reason to buy the 54 as well. Aesthetically they're very similar watches. Personally I prefer the size of the 54 and the cleaner look to the bezel, but if I already owned a 58 and liked how it wears, then I wouldn't swap it for the 54.

What is everyone obsession with size? Some watches look good at 45 (some Fliegers) others great at 34 (OPs). Not every watch that is smaller is automatically better. When you look a Muhammad Ali wearing a tiny Cartier , today it looks absolutely ridiculous. Tiny watches on big dudes looks off by todays standards. And this BB54 is so dull looking and boring it’s ugly and no one would give it a second look if it weren’t for every KZbinr stuck in an echo chamber parroting the same views.
@Escapement24

I get the first bit about size...but dull and ugly, really? It's basically a re-issue of a vintage Sub and I don't hear many people who think vintage Subs are dull and ugly. But equally each to their own and I appreciate that this hobby would be boring if everyone liked the same things.

A mate bought one of these giving me the chance to try it and I would say it wasnt too small - if I was 13 and hadnt gone through puberty. More seriously..... The history of watch sizes is more complex than people think about. Yes vintage watches were small - because they werent designed to be functional. The first mens watches were repurposed womens watches - so they started tiny and got a fraction bigger - because well, men were bigger. How much? Was that enough to make watches legible? what size "should" they be? No one had any clue really. Then WW2 happened and the science of ergonomics become big and people started doing testing and people caring about functions (like militaries) used that science to create specs and lo and behold watches jumped in size because small watches dont really work very well and watches 38 and up, generally 40 and up do.

No drilled lugs, no sapphire bezel, no red text on dial, no Tudor Rose on dial, no effort on case design....no reason to buy it. This is a very lazy effort by Tudor/Rolex. The juice ain't worth the squeeze.

Interesting points 🤔 I'd have liked drilled lugs but personally I think all those other details would've taken it too far away from the current Black Bay design language. You and I would've liked it, but not sure it would've had wide enough appeal in today's market.

These will all be getting dumped on EBay when the new METAS 58 and 58 GMT come out with a few more touches from a old Rolex. There will be videos like this one where people all agree that 39mm is actually the perfect size and the 54 is actually a touch small, and then a short while after that Tudor will release another watch that looks like a old Rolex but with a in-house movement in that’s strangely enough in many other brands of watches blurring the lines of what is a house movement ? and everyone will dump their Tudor’s on EBay and do it all again. And this is the Tudor boom and bust watch cycle that people keep falling for because they can’t get a bloody Rolex 🤦🏻‍♂️
