In 55 years of using flint and steel I’ve never had an issue getting a fire started. But my kit always has a good supply of jute for a birds nest. But carrying matches in the char tin is a great idea though. Redundant systems is a recipe for success.

I like this because I know there are ways to get sparks from a broken BIC lighter and this seems like a good way to make them count.

Great idea. What do you think of putting the sparked char cloth into the birds nest, matches on that, then oxygen so the matches flame up in the birds nest and dont need moved?

Dan, you’re the first person that I have ever seen to (1) start a fire without a match, to (2) light a match! ;). Kinda like (1) an ambulance intentionally running over someone, so they (2) could rescue them? As Archie once loving,y told Edith, “You’re a pip!” Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

Thanks Dan for another useful firestarting toolbox tip! The variety of tips and hacks that you share are valuable on so many levels, and it has encouraged me to be more creative and versatile in so many tasks beyond bushcraft. Building on these skills is a great confidence booster... not only for enjoying the great outdoors, but also for having the knowledge & skills in an emergency/survival situation where it could save a life (or lives). All the Best! 🇺🇸 🦅

I’m missing something. If you stick a couple of matches into a bird’s nest (even paper ones) and apply ignited char and oxygen to ignite the matches and subsequently the bird’s nest don’t you then have fire? Why ignite the matches to dry the bird’s nest material to make it easier to ignite the bird’s nest with the char. This seems like extra work and more complicated. I admit I never thought of adding a couple of matches to a bird’s nest. It seems like that is the best fire starting hack ever!

@clivedunning4317
@clivedunning4317 11 ай бұрын
Oh how I hate the fact that in most places you can no longer obtain proper "strike anywhere" matches ! Safety matches and their cr@ppy striker strips suck ! With the old matches you never had this problem , you could always strike them on a dry stone , or even your knife blade. Bring back strike anywhere matches !

The Longhunters.weren't playing a part. They existed within their time and environments, using the best technologies they had. Today they would do the same; modern firearms, clothing, firestarting, etc. It is doubtful any would rely primarily on flind and steel.
@Chungustav
@Chungustav 11 ай бұрын
Honestly, they would be using the modern metal, ferrocerium, not steel. Don't get me wrong. I have dozens of fire steals from the Roman times to the present but just saying as they have evolved so would their fire steals and they did. That's why we have modern fire steals

yes and no. i went back and freeze framed the video and the box clearly says "strike on box", so in that case, you are correct. they DO still make "strike anywhere" matches. they did change the formula so they are not the same. they are not strike "anywhere" but you can make them ignite without the red phosporus strikers. they are not the old strike anywhere matches, those things were awesome.

Don't see the point really, if you are going to go modern just use a Ferro rod, much more efficient than flint and steel, you don't need the charcloth.

Wast of time char is burning get your bird nest going , you should be teaching them to have a tender bag ready from the last outing if not punk wood should be in that tender box also matches r not even allowed on a hike or camp out unless we r dealing with other fuels like bottle gas. Thank u take a kid fishing and camping u got them aim high troop 41
