Is Tithing required in the New Covenant?

Is tithing a requirement for today? Malachi 3:10 is often used to compel believers to give 10% in tithe, in order to receive blessing from God. The New Covenant ushered in a different way to give - joyfully and without compulsion. Listen as we explain this “hard passage”.
Matthew 23:23 is often used as a basis for the act of tithing, but that teaching misses the point of the verse. Jesus was addressing hypocrisy of the teachers of the law. This "hard passage” is rich in matters of the heart.

Abraham tithed 10% to Melchizdec. From the spoils of war. Not from his own wealth. Then he gave the other 90% away. It’s awful when pastors use Melchizdec as an example of tithing.

One of the things that breaks my heart is that Everytime u hear one of these charlatans mentions tithe it is always from Malachi.. as though tithe was only mentioned in Malachi. What Christians must realise is that there is a blessing in giving and not only money.. feeding the poor etc..

@@oneoutoftheninety-nine.3314 yes Amanda... The Bible says... 'Who does not provide for his family is worse than an unveliever'. Tithe was mandatory in old testament because of their lifestyle and levites didn't have any other source. Now tithe God says to give to God... Where is God ? Give to any ministry who is suffering to survive and poor. Give to any poor. Do not provide to self sufficient church or pastor because that's not how it works.... Tithing must come from heart like a compassion and thanks giving. Not necessary you give your own church. You can give to anyone or any church who is suffering and in poverty

I ALWAYS knew that tithing was NOT required from the gentiles, way before I became a more "knowledgeable" christian, one church I went to, the pastor, who was also a friend of mine...at one point, POUNDED tithing down people's throats. Until one day I had enough, I walked out of the church" shook" the dust off my feet and NEVER returned. When I told people that tithing was wrong, they looked at me in disbelief and walked away, oh well, seek, knock and ask, just what I did, that was 30 some odd years ago. Since that "baby" time, my knowledge and faith have increased HUGE, and i'm still learning, and I love it...🕎

@@mariafegonzales5451 Oliver Cromwell, Martin Luther, William Tyndale, and all 54 men who translated and gave us the KJV did NOT believe in tithing. Charles Spurgeon and George Muller spoke out against it as well. Prior to the Revolutionary War of 1776 NO ONE in America paid tithes. A LAND TAX was collected from landowners and was paid to preachers for their salary (indexed for inflation it would be around $200,000.00 per year). In the original draft of the US Constitution this land tax was added then taken out. As a final note the word 'tithe' is not in the original Hebrew or Greek it is an old English word like ye, thee, or thou. It means the 'tenth one' or 'tenth part,' BUT has NEVER meant ten percent. Since the word 'tithe' is a noun and the word 'give' is a verb the are NOT synonymous and cannot be used interchangeably.

@@thevoned why is it that when someone points out the truth of God's word that tithing is not commanded to Christians and that it was an old testament command under the law, to the nation of Israel, that you then insinuate that she said that we should not give??? You know that she did not say to not give so why are you guilt tripping people for pointing out what God himself has said? Tithing has a surely nothing to do with cash, nothing to do with money, never ever did. That's first thing. Second thing is that tithing was specifically instructed to Jews of the old testament under the law and not to Christians who are not under the law. Tithing was bringing a tenth of their crops to the storehouse...vegetation not cash money. But we know that the love of money is the root of all evil so its no surprise that these wicked men put Christians under the law of Moses to extort them fir their cash and tell them that God has instructed them to do so. This is a lie from the gates of hell!!! This is not ok. Don't defend this lie by guilt tripping people who speak the truth and labeling them selfish, faithless, non givers. We are instructed as Christians exactly how to give- give according to what we purpose in our hearts. Not grudgingly but God loves a cheerful giver. That has absolutely no connection to the law of Moses for the Jewish people of the old testament. If you were taught that God is instructing you as a Christian to " tithe", you have been lied to brother. If you have been taught that a tithe means 10% of your Cash, your money, you have been lied to. If you actually gave corrupt men 10% of your money thinking you were following God's word, you were deceived . That's because you failed to study to shew thyself approved. A workman that needeth not be ashamed: rightly dividing the word of truth. There's no blessing in ignoring God's word and taking the word of a man instead. We need to pray and get in God's word for ourselves and let the Holy Spirit guide us into all truth. I don't mean to come off harsh . I'm just sick of these men lying to people.

Yes I know...Law to the Proud and Grace to the Humble... This is how you get to stop paying your tithes and offerings...Luke 14:33 Whosoever KJV forsake all, and God will have all of you...not just your 10% with a little besides... it's your whole life God wants...many people won't give God even 10% of their lives, and will search the scriptures looking for loopholes so they can keep their 10% and offerings... it's all of you God wants...forsake all and give all of yourself to God as a living sacrifice... P.S. Tithing won't save you your saved by faith in a Risen Savior...but if your saved then you will be a tither...but what God really wants is everything, all of you...Luke 14:33 Whosoever KJV... Whosoever is everyone...James 2:14-26... Works won't save you, but if you are saved you will do works of righteousness... if your not saved doing works won't save you... This is something Jesus said to do Luke 14:23 KJV...and Mark 16:15 because of Romans 10:14-17... Reading and studying your bible, praying and fasting witnessing, sharing your faith and loving the unlovable are some the works of righteousness that we're supposed to be doing. And giving your tithes and offerings...to the work of the ministry is a work of righteousness...I don't give tithes and offerings to God by faith because I am being manipulated by a pastor to do it...I give my resources to God gladly knowing God is in control, he will take care of me and my finances...I give myself wholly to God... holiness, wholly giving yourself to God...you won't be in sin if you wholly belong to your Savior... I am not just a believer, I am a doer of God's word, to many people believe but do nothing...the Great Commission is a work and a blessing...to all of God's Saints, Mark 16:15...Hodos!

The "tithe and offering together thing" is another way for some " churches" to add more money into the storehouse ,which is a depository for retirement. According to the Greek " tamēìōn - (" a chamber used for storage or privacy; spot for retirement)- secret chamber, closet, storehouse. Oh my goodness thank you so very much for clearing this up. I constantly felt guilty that I did not relinquish 10% of my income all the time because I tried it before for several months and got further behind in my balls. I am a very generous and charitable person if someone admires something that I am wearing or that I have it brings me great joy to give it to them. When I have and I can give I am more than happy to give and this is such a relief to me that I am not obligated and that God is not disappointed of those times when I just don't have additional even 2% but I would give when I have extra but I was taught constantly that if you only give when you have extra and not as a sacrifice that it wasn't good. I was taught that we are supposed to tithe even if it's a sacrificial tithe and that God would come through miraculously and I did try it for several months as I said before and I really got a whole car payment behind in my bills and struggled even more for the next few months to get caught back up.

Don't break your streak! It's a test! Disobeying the word of God when it clearly tells us to both Tithe and give offering (Offering is what you give freely not grudgingly because it can be significantly more that tithing, you can give a house to the church, a car, more money and whatever) Tithing is fixed and it's 10% of your increase, yes the only increase you get is what? That's right, a paycheck. The old way of gaining increase was owning cows, seeds, farming. In return you tithed from that! But today trading has changed, so if you do not pay tithes from your increase, you are clearly disobeying God 100% no questions asked. Deuteronomy 14:25 talks about exchanging tithes into money, if the (livestock and seeds for tithing are too heavy to carry while transitioning). This gives you an insight that God allows and allowed tithes to be of monetary form, which is very crucial in our modern day way of giving tithes to the Levites (Pastors as we call them today). Explain Then how are we to support Levites of today "Pastors"? With cows and seeds? Remember you are supposed to tithe a 10th of your increase, yes it applies to your paycheck as it is an increase. Confusing tithes as offering and offerings as tithes is a mistake. A tithe is a tithe an offering(giving) is an offering. We are supposed to do both but you just want to omit tithe but then pretend you're tithing as offering. Where is your tithe, bro? Read Deuteronomy, that scripture was kinda written for modern day life, or could be applied for a time like this. In that scripture they were transitioning so it was written for a transitioning period. But for us it still applies because we have transitioned from old form of trading commodity to a new form of exchanging goods, we don't use cows or seeds to tithe for the form of trade today is physical money, actually we shifted now to digital money to trade. Thus pay your tithe with the current mode of trade! I'll paraphrase Deuteronomy 14 but will post the verse in full context...."if you are not able to carry your tithes, then turn it into money", read Deuteronomy 14:22 but really starting from verse 25". Deuteronomy 14:22 Thou shalt truly tithe all the increase of thy seed, that the field bringeth forth year by year. 23 And thou shalt eat before the Lord thy God, in the place which he shall choose to place his name there, the tithe of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herds and of thy flocks; that thou mayest learn to fear the Lord thy God always. 24 And if the way be too long for thee, so that thou art not able to carry it; or if the place be too far from thee, which the Lord thy God shall choose to set his name there, when the Lord thy God hath blessed thee: 25 Then shalt thou turn it into money, and bind up the money in thine hand, and shalt go unto the place which the Lord thy God shall choose: 26 And thou shalt bestow that money for whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, for oxen, or for sheep, or for wine, or for strong drink, or for whatsoever thy soul desireth: and thou shalt eat there before the Lord thy God, and thou shalt rejoice, thou, and thine household, 27 And the Levite that is within thy gates; thou shalt not forsake him; for he hath no part nor inheritance with thee.

Differences in the old testament and new testament. God commanded in the old testament to observe tithing (Malachi 3:10), circumcision (Genesis 17:10), sabbath day (Exodus 20:8-11), stoning to death (John 8:1-11). Why some ministries do not teach the practice of circumcision, sabbath day, and stoning to death but teach to practice tithing. Why are they very choosy what to teach. In the new testament: >Jesus never sent anyone to death. >Jesus heals on the sabbath >Jesus never commanded his disciples to collect the tithes and offerings. >Giving is to the poor (Luke 19:8-9, Mark 10:21, Matthew 26:8-9)

For more than three decades since I became a born again christian I've been giving my tithes regularly. On few ocassions, by the grace of God, I gave my whole monthly salary to the Lord - not out of compulsion but purely love for the Lord and to meet specific needs in God's house. Yet, I had nothing to fall back upon. I regard tithe as the minimum amount for me to give to the Lord. The first time I gave my whole salary to the Lord (1987 December), I did so to meet an urgent need in the church and I gave it anonymously - it wasn't easy because of poverty, debts, bills and other responsibilities in a country with no safety net. But God is faithful. He has blessed me beyond my expectation though I did not give for the purpose of being blessed but out of love and deep appreciation to the Lord for my redemption. All these years that God has enabled me to give for the furtherance of the gospel I have no iota of regret but gratitude to the Lord who owns me and all that I possess.

Re. Matthew 23:23, earlier in that chapter, Jesus commanded his listeners to obey the Law of Moses: “The scribes and Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So practice and observe everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach." (verses 2 and 3) Jesus had not instituted the New Covenant yet. So of course they still needed to tithe and offer sacrifices and obey the Sabbath. But now we don't need to tithe or offer sacrifices or keep the Sabbath.

Compelled is a powerful word. In what sense do you use it here? Because you can be compelled by the pastor's in the preachers other constant pressure. You can also be compelled by the Holy Spirit and feel inside of you that you should feed that homeless person that you see we should help that mother out and buy her some diapers for her children things like this change the world. Money doesn't change the world. If each one of us use that tithe inside of us two others around us this place would be a lot better but as of now we are compelled by the preachers and teachers to give it to some entity.

Matthew 23:23 answers this question. When a pastor or whoever in a church asks for money, do what the Lord has put in your heart. If you are truly born again, you should have the Holy Spirit in you and He will lead you to a true church of Christ. Apostle Paul did write about this in 2 Corinthians 9, also read Galatians 6:6-8). It's better not to give to a 'church's and give directly to the needy than to give to a bad preacher, who tries to extort in the name of the Lord. Do and give what the Lord has put in your heart. Who has ever given to Hod that He should repay him? From Him and through Him and to Him are all things. A lot of preachers are telling people, pay your tithes or some will say: the Lord wants you to give a certain amount so that He can bless you with that new car or house or whatever and people believe. God us not your cash cow. Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and everything else shall be added unto you. People are lazy, they don't read their Bible. If you seek Gidcwith all your heart, you will find Him. The only way to Him is Jesus Christ. Seek Him because you want to get to know Him and not for material things, for what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and yet loses his soul? Our God is an awesome God. If you go to a place where the preacher talks about money all the time and nothing about the gospel of our salvation, the message of the Cross or about the Kingdom of God, you need to leave.

@godgavemee4434
@godgavemee4434 4 жыл бұрын
Abraham willingly gave tithe by faith not under command to Melchizedek when he was given wine and bread that's Communion and hence Levi paid while still in his loins. Under the law because of Levi's act God commanded them other 11 brothers tribes to pay tithe to the Levites. No gentiles mentioned or did our pastors bring bread and wine to the believers today? Was the act done once? Twice etc. It should not be a compulsion the haves can donate what so ever. If it is to be channelled into the gospel then fine but cheerfully and to those in need starting from the immediate members and Christianity will be sweet again. People will be running to lay their live for the gospel. Not this amassing of wealth of off the congregation as a higher class than the laity of worth. Shalom.

What Christ meant in Matt.23:23 which many believers misunderstood, the Scribes and the Pharisees have been faithful in tithing, so Christ was not saying that they should continue to tithe, but that they ought not to have left undone what they refused to do, which is Justice, Mercy and Faith.

Chapters 2 and 3 of Malachi are directed to the priests (spiritual leaders), NOT the average person! Malachi 3, in particular, has been regularly misused by pastors for fundraising. Malachi 2:1 states that the chapter is for the priests. Malachi 3:3 again refers to the priests. The storehouse in Malachi 3:10 is NOT an ordinary storage building, it is the storehouse for the supplies of the temple, which only the priests could access. Non-Levites were not allowed to enter it. The Law required the priests to tithe to God from what they received from the people. They were not doing this properly, so Malachi was sent to warn them.

Tithing is an old testament law it is an obligation to give because the law require it. But now in the new testament church we are no longer under the old testament law we are not require to follow law we are under grace we give out of love not by obligation. As Paul says in 2 Corinthians 9:7 "Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."

This teaching is going to set a lot of people free! Some who are building their own empires will kick and scream, but it is time to stop that madness. Tithes were meant to be put in the storehouse, tacking care of the priests, the fatherless, orphans, widows and those with needs as well as the strangers in their land. I will give to feed the homeless but I will NOT send another cent to buy airplanes, mansions and expensive cars while our countrymen go homeless and hungry!

@@kadidraj ; a tenth of your increase from the land............no where in all of scripture was money ever required as a tithe. I tell you ask you something else, do the "Jews" tithe to the Levites today? The answer is no, as there is no levitical priesthood in practice today. Also, the tithe was for the helpers of the priest (Levites), the priest received a 10th of a 10th of tithe.....this was a 1% tithe that was given to the priest, not a whole tithe. We all have been duped by institution...............up until about the 5th century, no one tithed and it was the council of macom(catholic institution) that re-introduced the tithing concept back into the "christian" church...........
