People who buy upscale hardtail will usually choose more boutique or niche names than Trek. The best trek could do is offer the Roscoe frames on a Marlin budget, screw the marlin altogether get newbies a frame they can actually upgrade...

i agree. i got my roscoe 7 for about 1100 and honestly I think any higher of a price and it wouldnt be worth it. ive had some issues with the rear wheel that required getting a new shimano xt wheel and hub off of jensen. not trek's fault, but if i had paid 1500 and then got a 250 dollar wheel on top of it i would have been pissed because I could have gotten a rift zone for that price

I thought the same way like you, Matty, when I was a beginner - that the "end game" would be to buy an expensive full-sus. It turns out that hardtails were the answer all along. Even tho I could afford a ful-sus these days with nice specs, I have zero desire to buy one. I'm kind of glad that I made this discovery quite early on as a mountainbiker, because I find it a bit distracting to constantly be "searching" rather than just get out there in the trail and ride and have fun. Best regards from Sweden!

If you have the components, Marino Bikes builds custom steel frames. The hardtail is around $400, a single pivot full sus can be had for around $600. You put in the geometry you want and they build it.

I prefer a hard tail too. I got my 9 about 2 months ago (all your videos helped me make my decision) and Ihad similar problems finding a large sized frame. I have a full suspension mountain bike...and it's an ebike. I also have the Trek Roscoe 8. I prefer hardtails as well when under my own power to eliminate the back flex under acceleration. With the Roscoe 8/9, the weight is kept reasonably low and the components never let me down. There is no battery anxiety of running out of juice and having to pedal your extremely heavy E-bike through the rest of the day/ride.

I really like my R7 in Miami green, I made some upgrades to it so I could shave some weight, but there’s lots to be said about it’s alpha gold aluminum vs the alpha platinum aluminum from the Procaliber AL frame! Roscoe’s frame is a much harsher ride with no trail chatter absorption will leave you more fatigued when it gets rowdy. On the procal’s frame I feel I could ride strong/ fresh for much longer when I’m seeking for a personal record. But when its time to get silly, the Roscoe takes the cake, it’s 140mm vs the 120mm from procal it’s not a match.

They are also likely scaling back on production due to a lack of demand in the industry currently. Not just for this specific model, companies are just having to manage their inventory differently. Rosco is the only Trek that gets a nod. I think they'd be silly to get rid of it at the lower spec levels.

The Roscoe 9 wasn't selling well because of the high price point. Once you make the jump from budget friendly hardtail into high end hardtail most people who want high end hardtails will buy a hand built steel or titanium frame and build the bike up fully custom.

It is cheaper to buy the higher model than do the upgrades. I am in that predicament. Upgrading the fork on my bike ( not a Trek) puts me already at a more expensive bracket than getting the next model. Without including the more gears drivetrain, the bottom bracket or the rear hub.

I had a bit of a chuckle watching your zig-zag your 9 around the rocks sticking up out of the ground and also the loose stones - definitely what you need to do on a hardtail to preserve your legs from the vibrations and pounding (all those rocks are prime fodder for mini-jumps & hops on a full suspension bike). Back in the day, hardtails had a huge variety in frame designs and materials that would try their hardest to flex (some even had tiny little spring-only shocks in the seatstay to absorb trail shocks), suspension seatposts, even detuning rear wheels, by reducing wheel tension for a more forgiving ride, the search to soften hardtails back then was a big deal - a burly aluminum frame on the Trek doesn't bother with trying to be compliant like the frames of old used to strive towards, so in a way, hardtail tech has definitely regressed. You definitely still have some cush in your cartilage, as you're still 'young'. Eventually, all that commotion at the rear wheel will catch up to you, as most of us old dogs have experienced. It's not an 'if', but 'when' kinda thing, so enjoy your hardtail while your body still can. cheers, and ride what puts a smile on your face no matter what.

I love hardtails and I think the Roscoe is a great frame. What I don't think is that the R9 is worth the 3k price tag they put on it. It has good specs but they are not top specs and there are many comparable spec hardtails for a lower price point. I also think the Marlin being their hardtail e-bike was a bad choice, they should have started with the Roscoe frame instead and they probably would have gotten better sales of it. The Marlin is a decent entry level MTB but it doesn't take long before its limitations start to show, these are geometry limitations not components. The Roscoe on the other hand can easily be worth it for a beginner because it is a bike that can be with them and upgraded as you go all the way through very advanced riding. Trek has been a good company but they have always seemed slightly out of touch with what people actually want and they price their stuff like gold, that is going to come back to bite them.

I'd have to disagree with your prediction. Making it an e-mtb will further push it into that high end hardtail market and if people are spending 4-5k on an e-mtb, they are probably going to spend a little more and get the full suspension. Applying the same argument you made for the disappearance of the Roscoe 9. They have the Marlin+ because the price delta between that and a full suspension e bike is great enough that someone considering the marlin probably won't spend the significant extra money for the full suspension.

I'd say Trek carries too many bikes that are too similar to each other, from the perspective of someone looking to buy their first or second bike. And each model has tons of sizes, colors, and equipment options. I mean 9 Roscoes, about the same Marlins, on and on. It adds cost to manufacturing and makes their bikes more expensive than similar competitors. BTW, Matty, if you look on any company's website at the bottom will be a "contact us" link, if you email them and tell them you're a KZbinr with 35,000 subs and a known Trek-lover and you simply ask them if they're discontinuing the model, you might actually get a contact from a public affairs rep or someone. Roscoe’s for the parts spec, are significantly over/higher priced than their equivalent spec ranges in either Marlin or Xcaliber counterparts (even compared to the new aluminum procalibers). The Roscoe’s do get better brakes and thru axle (rear), and one can argue the Fox fork on the R9 is better than the Rockshox on the xcaliber 9, but not to the tune of an extra $1,000 better (comparing full/initial list to list). You have to think about what type of riding you doing and using an appropriate bike for it. For all the hardtail riding you do a XC full suspension works better while still keeping it exciting. Trying to use an enduro the same way leaves a lesser experience. This is the reason why I have a XC full suspension and a Enduro, different tool for different task.

MyRoscoe 9 is good bike, problem is the price. Generally Trek bikes are more expensive than the competition, but i never minded that because imo Trek is goated and sell best bikes out there. I have Gen 4 rail 9.8 and gen 5 slash 9.8. I got them on sale so it was worth it for me. But i honestly dont see myself paying more than 1500 dollar for a hardtail even for a Trek. This days with same price as roscoe 9 you can get some pretty good full suspension bikes from second and third class brands. You can get low spec canyon spectral forexample for almost same price you can get YT capra with some decent specs like gx drivetrain, performance level suspension, dt swiss wheels, maxis tires, code r brakes. I dont simply see why hardtail should cost that much when full suspension dont. I get some people prefer hardtail. But for me ill take full sus over hardtail any day

Interesting that Specialized lists the Fuse as 'unavailable' at the moment. Maybe a new model is coming? I haven't been in the sport very long but it seems most ppl will start on a hardtail then go full sus forever.

I got a gen 5 slash 9.8 for $3400 at my lbs. I know I found a great deal on it but why on earth would I get a hardtail for $400 less??

Trek is reducing the number of Skus and they have been at this for some time now. It's super sad that they're likely going to stop producing such a killer bike :( I think the X-Caliber series will be totally gone too!

Trek went over his head with the prices of HTs… that’s it. No one wants to buy a bigbrand aluminium HT with the price of a well speccd direct sales FS bike.

I think youre about a year too late on this info. It’s been known that trek and big manufacturers are going to kill a lot of their multi offering for the single model. Marlin will be the xc, Roscoe will be the trail, and we’ll only have the option of the one Roscoe model - probably the 7

For retail the Roscoe 9 is just overpriced and doesn’t come specked well enough to justify the price. For 3k you can buy a just as nice if not nicer of a spec full sus. Also most people will shy away just because of the ugly color way. But for the sale price I think it’s decently worth it.
