My father had dementia and acted very similarly to how Trump is acting; making up stories, forgetting words, being confused about where they are, exaggerating situations, speech problems (my father was a wordsmith) etc. I have said this about Trump when he was on the campaign trail that he was acting like someone with dementia. There needs to be a cognitive and psychological review of anyone holding a political office, especially the Presidency. We know there is one for a physical, but I have never heard for cognitive etc.

My dad works as a gerontologist and consults with people who have dementia, and he says Trump shows all the signs of someone with the disease. He also states that activities like golfing use the procedural memory which activates part of the brain that is not affected by dementia. This activity would be very comforting and empowering for Trump. In fact, repetitive motion activities like washing something or polishing something are often used to help people with dementia become more aware of their world. Dementia could also be a reason for the constant trips to Mar a Lago, a location where Trump feels at home and safe. I would also agree with those who have stated that Ivanka moving in as care-giver-in-chief is also a sign that something is not right. It's actually really sad.

Right you are. You made this observation in April of 2017. What do you think now? In particular, I'm referencing a) the attempted sale of our latest weapon's technology to the Saudis and b) Trump's pathetic interview with the NY Times. I personally think it is insane to sell the latest offensive technology to a Muslim country which has ties to the Wahhabi Clan - they are known terrorists. I also think that a Wharton School Grad who can't distinguish between a Whole Life Policy for Infants and a National Healthcare Plan is ready for assisted living. There are many other indicators that Trump is mentally incompetent, notably his AP interview and his Lester Holt interview, but there isn't room to post them here. Don't you think, doctor, that a man who believes that healthcare premiums can be purchased for $1/month should be a candidate for a full psychiatric workup?

My mother suffered from dementia which progressed into Alzheimer's disease. All this happened over an eighteen year period. She exhibited all of the symptoms that Trump shows. Especially the paranoia, lack of communication skills, mood swings, inability to reason, read or comprehend the world around her. She died at 88 years old. She had no quality of life for at least ten years before she died. She did not know me or my brother or friends or grandchildren. A terrible thing indeed.

Like the size of a grapefruit. She wanted surgery, which I wish we had never let her go through. Her skull was cut in half, then come to find out their was so much cancer that they just stapled her up. How I wish we had never consented to surgery. At least she could talk a bit before the op. I noticed irrational behavior when I visited her prior to all this.

Queen Bee true, but he would never admit he has dementia let alone allow a doctor to examine and diagnose him. What surprises me the most is that David is the first person I've heard to bring up Trump's father having dementia. I had assumed before I searched it that if it were he case the Dems would've already beaten that horse to death.

Don't count on the Democrats to do even the simplest of tasks when the presumed goal is beating Republicans. It would more fit the pattern if the Democrats did find out about Fred Trump's dementia and then sat on it for months because they were so hubristic they felt they didn't need to mention it.

When you are around people with Dementia or Alzheimer's (both my parents) you notice the abrupt changes in mood, lack of command of speech where there was once a commendable command of discussions, meetings and just normal conversation. There is also the topic of what is real and what is imaginary. There was a significant change in character - where there was a tremendous concern for themselves & little regard for others feelings. Also, what some would consider making up stories - in each parent's case, there was a definite focus on things imagined and you learn to not challenge these changes, in my case because it was sad for me to see these two vital people go through many changes in character so unlike their behavior even 5-10 years before. At a certain point, more pronounced with Alzheimer's - the focus on illnesses imaginary and focus on themselves, so unlike them, was just a knowledge you acquire and can only at some point go along with or ignore the behavior as it is the progression of the disease. One last thing I will share is in my situation both exhibited an unfounded distrust of some people and imagined behaviors on the part of these individuals. Something like paranoia. Conversations, as each interpreted, was a perceived attack on them. It later turned into hospital staffs having talked about them or they were out to get them. That heightened sense of paranoia, imaginary body concerns, health concerns which had one been minimized, now was the focus of much of their day. I am not a medical professional, but did observe & note all these changes attributable to the diseases they each had. I'd never try and diagnose a person - but what I see in Trump is VERY similar to what I witnessed as a caregiver. It was not easy to witness, but each of the behaviors I witnessed with great frequency do have similarities to some of what I see in Trumps behavior. This is not an attempt to find "real mental decline" in all he does, however I cannot discount the stark similarities. The one item that was very difficult to some family & friends was their complete denial that anything was wrong. Some older acquaintances and family tried to talk to them as to facilitate a change - but there is a complete lack of understanding what changes people may be talking about. You won't talk them out of the disease -BUT -there are some very good medications to slow progression and minimize symptoms. Again, these are only going to slow the progress of the mental decline and eventually even medications lose their effectiveness. You must also be aware that dementia & alzheimer's are likely not the only medical conditions the elderly will suffer from. Watching my parents decline over 15-16 years is so challenging - BUT - the caregiver will get an education on each illness and how some interact negatively with others.

Tony Garcia; Sorry to hear what your parents went through., nevertheless a good comparison to Trumps condition, certainly won't improve. Seems he's declining every day. @matthieuriolo: Hi Matt,I have tremendous respect for anyone who is a caregiver for a dementia patient. There are many types of dementia. My Mother who I have taken care of, and is now in a seniors home, has Lewy bodies(DLB). Initially, the symptoms started more with odd judgment, and shuffling than memory. I have taken care of my Uncle for three years, and his first symptoms of what is now diagnosed as Alzheimer's, was orientation and his sense of direction problems.Four times out of five, he would leave a building ,and go the wrong direction.Next was short term memory. He is now at about 3 out of five on the dementia scale and his short term memory is basically gone. What really got my attention with Trump, is that he has walked off in the wrong direction several times in public, and he is having trouble picking words, and repeating the same word many times to fill in for the proper ones. His speech and sentence structure, have diminished.

Donald Trump has Alzheimer’s disease. I specialized in the diagnosis and management of Alzheimer’s Dementia for many years. I believe Donald Trump has Alzheimer’s and may already be moving from the mild to the moderate stage. About one in six Alzheimer’s sufferers do not start out with severe memory loss as their key symptoms. One in six people with Alzheimer’s disease start with psychiatric symptoms first. Those symptoms include: 1. Excessive irritability 2. Blowing up in anger when challenged (the so-called “catastrophic reaction”) 3. Paranoid thinking 4. Delusions (Often based on a dream the person had the night before after which they wake up convinced the dream was real.) 5. Inability to catch humorous comments or the punch line of a joke. 6. Inability for abstract thinking, making concrete interpretations of metaphors. 7. Amplification of the premorbid personality (i.e. if you were shy before, you’ll be more shy. If you were narcissistic before, etc.) 8. Confabulation: “The production of fabricated, distorted, or misinterpreted memories about oneself or the world, without the conscious intention to deceive.” And yes, Donald’s father Fred suffered from Alzheimer’s Dementia for six years before he died.

I have thought this from the beginning of the campaign. My mom had Alzheimer's, and the symptoms are so recognizable--the outbursts without words to express the discomfort, the use of nonspecific words (as you pointed out), the disjointed sentences. Also, I think he relies on his family, particularly his daughter, to be his ears and memory in meetings. That's why she's not off doing her own business right now. Of course, just my non-medical opinion...

He has been obviously in a state of cognitive decline as we've seen from the beginning of his campaign. So many of us saw this, but his behavior didn't seem 'different' to his base, instead, he seemed 'simple' and 'understandable' to the uneducated. His limited vocabulary from his early stage of dementia seemed 'safe' to them, he didn't use big words or seem more intelligent than them

I have been thinking that for over a year. The classic symptoms like divorced from reality, delusions of grandeur, memory lapses so he makes stuff up to fill in the gaps, narcissistic obsession with himself (it's all about him, after all) and a previously admitted promiscuous lifestyle (although that may just be false bragging). Luckily these symptoms only arise in the late tertiary stage of the disease when it is no longer contagious. A shame that he didn't get a single shot of antibiotics early on decades ago.

We are all familiar with the saying that like attracts like. At first I believed that Mr Trump had the ability to speak to his supporters in the campaign rallies in 'their' language. The language of the undereducated and those challenged by words of more than two or three syllables. Except that after a while one becomes aware that Mr Trump is actually very comfortable with this genre. Then it becomes obvious that he is actually at home at this level of overly simplistic analysis and childish promises, sloganizing and chanting. No one is required to think or consider, weigh or balance. Just clap and cheer and boo when appropriate. Not what I understand as adult behaviour.

There's certainly something worth exploring on this very issue David! AS we..Most of The European Community have been looking at Clips From his Interview And speech patterns from his 80's til late 90's Anwers..He Back then seemed So much more Attentive as well as articulate in his responses, and explanations on a variety of subjects that mattered to him at the time ,and also in criticizing Certain Political figures..It's obvious and clear he has lost that ability of Clearness of Mind..! You don't need to have a PhD in Psychiatry or be called Sam Harris..You just can go back only 20 years ago and watch the Interviews to see that The World is now trying to deal with an entirely Different personality..!

Sorry...my bad. I guess it's back to: wait for it, wait for it, wait for it, wait for it, wait for it, wait for it. Hmmm? Maybe we should ask Ivanka, if America is great again. Or, maybe Frau Kellyanne Con-artist is available to give an ETA on when your boy will have us not have to wait for "things" to happen "yesterday, immediately or simultaneously". Maybe *you* can give either of them a call, to speed up an answer to share with all of us. ((Cough, cough, cough)), Sorry. This cannot go on, someone in the Gov has to recognise that he is sick and will only get worse, this is a very cruel disease as it changes peoples personality, and eventually he is going to make a really big bo-bo, even the lies can be due to the sickness as a person cannot remember what has happened even only a minute or two before.

Caged: anything which doesn't contain animal products, so the dietary aspect of veganism can vary greatly, depending on the person. I personally try to eat a diet comprised mainly of legumes, grains, nuts, seeds, fruits and vegetables, with some fortified foods added in, like plant-based milks and meat alternatives. I certainly have my indulgences, as well-Ben & Jerry's has 7 non-dairy varieties, after all. Can't say its improved my complexion, though.

Karen Jones To the best of my knowledge, it's a chapter in the 25th amendment: the Vice President may declare that the President has become unable to fulfill the duties of the presidency. There would be some more steps to go until the President would really have to go, but that route is still somewhat easier than an impeachment. The amendment doesn't exactly specify what makes the President unable to continue, so it's basically the Vice President's job to judge the President's current abilities (or any loss of abilities). [I'm not a native speaker. Bear with me.]

This is one more reason why I, as a licensed clinical psychologist, am opposed to diagnosing him from afar. He does have signs -- from afar-- of early onset dementia...narcissistic personality disorder, paranoid personality disorder and you get my drift. While we should keep our eyes open, those problems are not illegal. In fact, some former Presidents have had psychological problems. What we should concentrate on, instead, is the laws he is breaking and the ethical and judgment problems... they are relevant and, in some cases, actionable on our part.
