In today's video, Ted delves into the complexities of piano manufacturing and string design, shedding light on the tuning challenges they present. If you've ever contemplated tuning a piano yourself, this video is a must-watch. Ted also proposes a non-traditional approach to piano construction and shares an innovative idea that he believes Kawai's EX (Experimental) design team should consider. I was really scared to tune my new piano, but I did it a few weeks ago. It turned out fantastic. It took me 3 hours though. Still it was really rewarding and I plan to keep doing it. I'll still have the tech look at it every year or other year, like a physical.

In this link, from only the played notes with the same piece in each instrument, we can see sk-5 and gx-5 have different fingerprints or signatures. The shape of the soundboard can be drawn in the spectrum, with higher amplitude in the bass tapering towards the treble. SK-5, with the played piece, shows a valley around 300-500Hz range. Or with just one key played, in this video, you can draw the piano shape with an attenuated bass, but with almost the same shape. This is the most interesting feature I've seen in FFTs of pianos, even one single hammer hit can make the whole sound board resonate and show the piano signature or fingerprint. That's what amazes me, a plot of F5 in SK-5, peaks above the board background and you can tell it's that note, of F#5 shows a forest of high frequencies and a tall bass signal (linked pdf), and still the note can be recognized. drive.google.com/file/d/1TOkwRUwcSrkMV4ZvS65zF9K8ev73T6hF/view?usp=sharing If, in every test, you could play a full 88 key chromatic scale, a more accurate spectral fingerprint of each piano could be obtained. Audacity is freeware, and one can get a nice spectrum from the recorded sound, or plot in a spreadsheet the FFT output as txt for comparison. www.audacityteam.org/

The resolution in the frequency domain using FFT is low in the bass and high in the treble. Is the FFT method that by splitting in half the time range increases the resolution in the higher frequencies than in the lower. That's why so few data points are shown in the linked pdf plots in the low freqs.

So are you saying that the Shigeru is less stable than pianos that use a single string per note?

@@tedbarsalou833 meaning that single string is more stable ? What is better ?
@tedbarsalou833
@tedbarsalou833 6 ай бұрын
@@maxrey4055 Pianos that have single string design are better designed instruments. Hope I cleared that up. Individual assessments or generalizations of "better" leading to "best" is not the topic. Although the design may be "better" it could also be built of crap materials by untrained or uncaring craftsmen, so don't look for precision, just the concept.

@@tedbarsalou833ok just checking because I just received my new SK7 and it never occurred to me to consider this when choosing a new piano. I was also under the impression that Shigerus were very stable instruments
