All German Universities left Twitter Bluesky is growing fast and ill take over
@manub.38478 күн бұрын
I recently saw a report on a regional TV station here in Germany about one of our large construction companies that always equips its house builds with a complex package of renewable energy modules and technologies. This construction company has a) canceled all Tesla company car orders; b) canceled every other product from Tesla for its house builds (e.g. batteries); c) deleted (or "muted") its Twitter account. Because the company management neither accepts Musk's political interference nor the media promotion of our country's far-right (Nazi) party. I suspect that some companies have already quietly (internally announced only) left Twitter/X or have left the site with only a reference to other media that can be used. And the advertising campaigns there have probably also been stopped.

There were several socialist parties @1900-1912 and another wave in the 1930's during the Depression. Some went too extreme or wouldn't support the others for being reformists, not revolutionaries, and even sabotaging the "localist first" groups. But there were many State Reps, Mayors, Governors, Councillors during both this period that coul be defined as Democratic Socialist or Labour Socialist. The problem in the period since the Vietnam War is that the Green Party and other socialist countries have mainly focussed of their fruitless Presidential races. Phil makes a good point on oligarchy in US - these are real oligarchs wielding their own power. It’s opposite to what happened under Putin in Russia: there are individuals mandated to rule or to be rich. Such individuals aren’t oligarchs; Persian patrimony was quite an opposite to oligarchy of various republican city-states. Citizenship existed in ancient and medieval republican city-states alongside the status of subject in monarchies. Citizenship was a fact in the cities of Dutch Republics or in Venice in 17-18th centuries. One could move around Europe to some extend but there were strings attached in whose subject they were (or where they were citizens). Naturalisation in republics was not that straightforward as it meant access to citizens’ rights, and even pronouncing on elf a subject to another monarch needed to be accepted by authorities of the new realm. In England the status of a subject gradually evolved into citizenship over 16th and 17th centuries. In USA and France modern type of national citizenship was established in respective Declarations (of Independence, and of Rights of a Human and a Citizen) upon the revolution in each of those countries. Gradually it spread over many countries. Nation became a collective of citizens who nationalised their state and government. Passports were widely in use in 19th century; they were issued by authorities for travelling purposes. Travelling individuals had to present them to the border services and various authorities in the places where they stayed.

There is already a rule in places I know about where you obviously are liable for taxes in a country, if you spend over 183 days there of a calendar year. So that part already exist, where you can't for example stay in France legally for ages without paying your taxes there because you are officially registered somewhere else. If you do that, it would be tax evasion. What you aren't going to be able to do is have international agreement of some high taxes for millionaires. There will always be places like Monaco, Singapore, Dubai and Bermuda where they will go if if the alternative is very high taxes in places like London. The only option is to keep the taxes reasonable, so some person that actually prefers London to Dubai, will choose London even if it's a bit more expensive for them from a tax perspective.
@johnwright93729 күн бұрын
You miss the point. The wealthy hold their money through companies, not in their personal names. They can live where they like as long as their money is elsewhere under another name.
@cyberfunk37939 күн бұрын
@@johnwright9372 The issue he talked about was personal taxation and how UK allowed at least in the past to live there without paying personal taxes on their "outside to UK" income. It's not due to company taxes outside UK changing that 10k millionaires left UK in 2024. Also, if you wealth is mainly in a foreign company, you obviously aren't going to be able to legally use those funds personally without it being tax evasion in most jurisdictions. It's either going to be taxes on the dividends or salary from the company. If you do some arrangements like taking loans from the company that you'll never pay back, it's also going to be tax evasion or illegal in some other ways. Some European countries actually directly tax you on profits personally on profits a company is making outside the country, if the jurisdiction is deemed as "tax evasion" jurisdiction.

Are you sure that microphone doesn't require phantom power (48v), Phil? It's odd to say you can't turn the gain up any more and most large diaphragm condenser microphones need it for a loud and good sounding signal. It should just be a push button on your audio interface or in the software sound mixer for it.

I think the biggest problem that Labour have created is the perception of doom in the way they have communicated their policies and their wider promotion or lack of it. The bad things people are associating with them are in relation to tangible things that are happening like the winter fuel payment but the positives are all wrapped up in promise and hope of growth and development with no pathway to actual outcomes !!

schools in the usa get, as far as i now, some money from the local district, some money from the state and some money from the federal goverment. the graphs i saw about this roughly implied a 1/1/1 split, but that may be just the average or something

In most states of America synthetic phonics was adopted by 2014, but a few red states remain defiant and their literacy rates are the lowest in the country. So it's not just that schools in poorer parts of America (although red states are poorer) get less funding but their poor perfomance in such a foundational skill as reading is due to insistence on teaching ineffective methods referring to long ago debunked research about synthetic phonics and such as look and say and quessing the content of a text from accompanying pictures by those who DIDN'T learn to read DESPITE such a method. In some states teachers are even BANNED TEACHING analytic phonics, never mind synthetic phonics! For those who are unfamiliar with the topic, here are 4 main pedagocics that have been used in 21st century. *Whole book/Real book method* Children look at picture book, possibly of a story they are familiar with, or they listen to teacher read and try to *guess* what the words mean from the content. The teacher does not point to the words as she reads. *Look and say* A child is expected to remember the word and all the letters in it by its shape, relying on a child's visual memory. Flashcards and chanting the letters ("Multiplication I spell m-u-l-t-i-p-l-i-c-a-t-i-o-n..") is heavily used for memorising vocabulary and often produces fast results initially but as the number of words, especially similar-looking words a child has to retain, many children start failing. This method uses graded *book band books* with high repetition rate of the same words. *Analytic phonics* Kids are taught phonics as incidental suplementary *after* they have been taught by look and say method. This method is better than none when a child comes across a word when he doesn't know how to read, but the temptation to fall back to guess the word as in whole book or look & say method is often too strong to resist. *Syntethic phonics* Children are taught the letter sounds from the very beginning (not just the 26 letters of the alphabet but also di-and trigraphs and longer letter combinations that form some 85% of the words, leaving only 5% for memorization, or part memonrisation = in many cases there is only one "rogue letter that is not true to the sound, while the rest of the word is regular) as building blocks for reading the word. The letters are not introduced in alphabetical order but in sets that can be combined into most words. Thus the child can read their first word on the second day and 103 words by their 6th day (first group). In reality, this method is often initially slower than analytic method depending on a child's phonemic awareness, but produces more confident readers in the long run, when the student habitually chooses to "sound out" the words as their first technique. Synthetic phonics graded readers are based on the graphemes they have been introduced and the length and complexity of the word. Some books are introduced after the child has been introduced to the first group (satipn) some only start from the assumption a child has been introduced the graphemes *to all the 44 sounds* of formal English) progressing to true silent letters, alternative spellings of a sound (ae, ay, ai - and their split forms like "magic e").
