As a Londoner my last resort for transport would be a black cab because they are the most expensive. If I had to take a taxi it'll be Uber because all the drivers use a navigation app which avoids traffic and more importantly costs about half of a Black Cab. I really don't care how many years you've spent memorising the streets of Central London just how much it'll cost to get me to my destination and Uber will always win.

I'm a delivery driver for nearly 15 years I get tired of heavy lifting and decided to try pco Uber after one month work I find my self cheap and slave doing fares of 5 pound in traffic earning 100 pound in 9 hours before expenses that's what I call slavery. +Kelvin Chase firstly there are more then 100k private hire drivers in London alone. Out of these 100k plus drivers, between 30k-40k work for uber. How the hell do you know that everyone who does bad manoeuvre is an uber driver unless your sitting next to them checking their documents while they do these illegal driving? To be fair I've seen a huge number of black cabs doing red lights and really bad illegal manoeuvres too, not forgetting stopping anywhere without using ommonsense. Boris was right (and i don't often agree with Tories, especially Boris) when he called them Luddites. The technology exists to make getting around London and other cities cheaper and faster, so why no use it? It's understandable that people don't like change to their working practices, but you have to move with new technology, otherwise technology will steam roll over the top of you. It happened to the music industry, the film industry and high street retailers, who all complained that the Internet was destroying their business models and it took them 10 years longer than it should have to compete with them, just through their short sightedness or refusal to embrace the new tech. Cab drivers and the operators now seem to be falling into the same trap.

I have a little story for you. In 1915 New York the horse population picked and horses were just about everywhere and anywhere. However, when the automobile introduced itself on the scene, a lot of people were a little bit skeptical. Some people even said that the horse will always be needed and this car/automobile thing will blow over. Fortunately (or unfortunate for some) we all know what happened after this. The horse population decreased thereafter and this wasn't because horses got lazy but autos were much more effective. Just like the horse vs automobile tussle in the early years of the twenty first century, I see one loser in this Cabbies vs Uber war. I don't get why should they study so hard for 5 years just to be able to be a taxi driver when they could just go to the University during that period of time AND use Uber to make money on the side. If not fully allowing Uber, the UK should do (at least) what Germany did, when you use Uber you are basically calling a normal cab and the prices are the same (except for the stupid credit card fee), that's it.

Héctor Aguilera couple of things. Even with a degree, there's no guarantee of landing a job in your field. With the knowledge, once you pass there's a job at the end. The knowledge is also cheaper to do than a degree, there's no entry requirements like a degree has .

Why is it whenever I get in the back a black cab I always forget to put my seatbelt on, whereas in any other car I always remember? Simple economics, Uber costs less for the customer. If the Black Cabs fares were on par with Uber then I'd consider using them but my biggest problem with the Black Cabs is the sense of entitlement they have on the streets of London.

Much as I respect the knowledge, and the people who sacrifice so much of their lives to do it; I also think that it's the driving force behind the death of the black cab. Modern technology has made it unnecessary to learn it, and it's stubborn refusal to die, is at least part of the reason why these cabs are so expensive. As for the cabs being an "icon," I agree, they are! But why must we necessarily get rid of the cabs just because we got rid of the test you have to take to drive them? It's sort of a "throwing the baby out with the bathwater" mentality; the idea that watering down the knowledge would result in no more black cabs. They'd still be there, in fact, there'd probably be more of them!

Colin Kennedy I would argue that it's diminishing returns. It's not that the knowledge is no better, it's that the sacrifices needed to get there don't ultimately make a big enough impact to offset the effort put into it. Cab drivers like the knowledge because it puts them in an exclusive club; but reality means that it just isn't as relevant as it used to be.

Hi everyone, I have just seen this KZbin clip and totally agree with the way that knowledge guy spoke about the cab trade. I've been on the knowledge for a while now, it's so much harder to complete today as there are more road changes due to cycle lanes etc.... When people say Tom toms or satellite navigation does the job now, that is utter nonsense as a cab driver you know one way streets, no right or left turns which navigation can't keep up. I see on countless occasions uber drivers going up or down one way streets which is very dangerous. Once again congrats to that guy on KZbin putting this out to the great black cab trade which is the best in the world.

The time of journey is relative it's the price- Uber journey prices are standard ad don't change no matter how long it takes to complete unlike black cabs (sitting in traffic jam in black cab the customer is paying with uber this isn't the case)

I am told the low lives used their freedom to increase their fares 3 fold. In the age of smartphone, u don't survive by memorizing u r city bloc by bloc as google made it obsolete. But then old boy city cabbies have HUGE value that I'd trust him when I say "I want THE BEST ma and pa bespoke shoe shoppe this city can offer!" , "I want to go to a quaint corner shop that's not a famous place and have authentic SHeppards Pie!" or something like that. Basically local knowledge that's off the tourist map. That's where old city boy cabbies shine- and that personalized suite of services is something google can't provide for next 50 years conservatively, so it is best to focus on that as u r USP rather than keeping it as "Hey! I memorized London maP!" Also, in India, city taxi folks have gotten creative to compete against Uber. They even found a match making service among passengers where the cabbie act as mediators, and they take touris to their home for an authentic home cooked meal (which tourists trust since they have "city taxi" label- Uber driver can't offer this experience as nobody trust him easy etc) . Instead of crying u lost u r USP, why not switch to a new one like what I recommended? Black taxi will continue to thrive!

Satnavs are very inaccurate in London. Uber is a predatory company. Not only do they have too many accidents - they have bankrupted an insurance company - they have also bankrupted the buses and the night tubes because of their predatory pricing and are bankrupting all the other legitimate taxi and private hire companies. Their drivers earn half the minimum wage after expenses and every time you get into an Uber you are supporting the very worst side of global capitalism which pays fabulous money to the few people at the top, and hardly anything to the people who do the work! Do we really want to have third world economy in our midst? Oh, and they don't pay tax either! BAN UBER FROM OPERATING ANYWHERE IN THE UK!
