24:18 This option still exists in Nautilus but relies on the contents of the ~/Templates directory and is up to distributions and users to add. Although I do find it weird that they don't at the very least provide a template for an empty text file, it's as simple as touch ~/Templates/'Text File'.txt. I'm even more surprised that Ubuntu doesn't provide a set of templates for its preinstalled software eg. LibreOffice docs, aside from the basic text file ofc.

A lot of the good stuff is just GNOME 42, so it’s a similar experience in Fedora 36. But Ubuntu still adds a number of their own refinements, which are nice. My favorite is the revamped dock, which is apparently just a tweaked Dash-to-Dock extension but it’s SUPPORTED by Ubuntu, so it shouldn’t ever break. That’s important. If only they would integrate and support a few more of the most popular GNOME extensions. Overall 22.04 seems to be a lot better than many people were expecting.

Not being able to create a file is actually a very weird Nautilus decision. Many distros fix that (unfortunately not Ubuntu) by adding template files in the Template directory (.txt, .docx, ...etc.) which u can find in your home directory, this way when you u right click inside of Nautilus, a new file entry will now appear where u can choose a template from the ones u created before. I find this templates thing very handy for creating pre custom files and not starting from zero.

Your review on Ubuntu is very honest. Most people just hate Ubuntu over Snap and I don't understand why. Ubuntu is for the users who don't care about apt, pacman, snap, flatpak. For those who may not be able to migrate away, you can optionally continue with an additional 5 years of support, when 22.04 officially goes End of Life in 2032 (ESM). Every Ubuntu release since 14.04 has supported this same approach, and works very well for those who have difficulty moving their infrastructure or application footprint to a new LTS release. For the rest, you can use `do-release-upgrade` to move between LTS or Development releases.

Ubuntu 22.04 plus the "unsnap" scripts is the best Ubuntu ever. In order to create a new file from the right click menu, you have to add it as a template in the templates folder. Open Gedit>New file> Save as>New text.txt in the templates. After that, the option will be there.

Advice that could’ve saved me 3 days of my life and some of my sanity for any beginners trying out Ubuntu: Once you install it check ‘sudo apt update’ and if you get any errors that don’t allow you to update because of the country mirror codes, type ‘sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list’ and hit ‘ctrl + \’ to replace ‘XX.’ Where X is your country code, hit enter and replace it with nothing (just hit enter again) then press ‘a’ to replace all and make sure it says “archive.ubuntu” before you save it. After that you should be able to update properly.

It's the biggest change in Ubuntu since they switched to Unity. They def fixed some the bugs in Ubuntu 21.10, which odd year dot 10 releases should be treated as betas. Firefox being a snap is probably the most divisive issue they have.

Agreed. They are easily removed, so it is no issue for me, but it sours a lot of people on Ubuntu in general (and we are at a point in time where it is fashionable to hate on Ubuntu anyway).

Firefox as a snap isn't really bad to my opinion, Because the guys behind ubuntu has control over wich version you can have. So that if (and i had this happen to me a few times) Mozilla brings out a new version of firefox, cannonical can make sure the ubuntu repos has the right dependency versions so that firefox can work

I love ubuntu! I’ve only used it for two days as it’s my first experience with linux. But I’ve made great use out of it! For example: my Modified Nintendo Switch, I don’t have a use for it yet, but it’s neat! Another use I have for it is putting it on my dads computer after I accidentally corrupted his windows bios after changing a setting in windows and powering off improperly… and then deleting the bios…. and not being able to fix it for months until I figured out what linux is by putting it on my switch….. I’m rambling, aren’t I?

@redgeoblaze37522 жыл бұрын
I think most of the hate is just from Arch/Mint Fanboys. I use Arch (btw) and I could never see myself using Ubuntu anymore, but I still hope for it's success, and respect it in a way. It's the gateway drug most of us used to get into Linux. Some releases recently had some issues though, like when it would favor snaps over apt at some point. I don't know a lot about that situation, but I assume it was fixed quickly.

I don't think the complaints about firefox as a snap package were even about the speed, rather the fact that it's run in somewhat of a sandbox, while a lot of people installing ubuntu want to quickly customize gnome with extensions, and there are browser extensions that let you do that really easily. But while firefox supports those browser extensions, they just won't work in snap, and that's by design. So if you want to quickly browse and explore what gnome extensions have to offer your most user friendly bet would be to install firefox natively instead Oh and of course for the less tech savvy who might be following a little tutorial on youtube, there's no user friendly error here that says "Gnome shell integration is not supported in the snap distribution of Firefox", you have to figure out for yourself why it's not working.

Can't create a new file? yep, that's the Gnome, where they focus more on aesthetics instead of functionality, what's even more bizarre is that nautilus used to have that option back in Gnome 2, but for some strange reason the Gnome guys decided to remove it, in fact they should really call nautilus a file browser instead of a file manager because browsing files is all its really good for, if you want a good gtk file manager then choose caja or nemo, even the lightweight pcmanfm has better functionality than nautilus, its the main reason why I can't use Gnome, it just lacks customization options, I'm currently using LXQT, not only is it faster and lighter than Gnome but its also more customizable too, you want to use another window manager like Kwin instead of openbox? LXQT gives you that option right in their session settings control panel, you can't do that in Gnome, your stuck with their default window manager which lacks smart window placement.
@Sjoerd19932 жыл бұрын
It's a bit weird it works like this, but they didn't remove this functionality at all. You just need to put an empty text file in the templates folder and then it works as expected.
@benjy2882 жыл бұрын
@@Sjoerd1993 It is pretty weird, it should be a standard feature of every file manager, its not just that though, there's a whole lot of features that were removed from nautilus, just use nemo or caja to see what nautilus used to be like, its like the Gnome guys have deliberately tried to dumb it down.

For people wondering, the ONLY way in GNOME to have right click new document menu is to create in ~/Templates documents that you want in said menu. This is from Nautilus in GNOME 3 onwards. So you have to create a .txt, a .odt, a .doc etc in your ~/Templates because the GNOME team is obtuse like that

Also, this happened to me, if removing a Windows 11 partition during installation, you may find yourself with an error saying that the kernel couldn't be informed of the formatting and the installer will quit. This is not an Ubuntu error, it is Windows doing, but at this point Windows will have been deleted anyway, reset, start the process again until the disk is fully free and the installer will eventually go through installation even in UEFI mode
