UConn has won national championships with their last 3 coaches. UConn is the best program in college basketball over the last 25 years. 5 national titles in that span which is 2 more than any other program. There's more parity and it's harder to win a national title in today's game, and during Uconn's run than it was 50+ years ago.

If not for an incredible run by George Mason, this could've easily be title 4 for Jim Calhoun, but not a knock at consistency, 5 players from this squad selected in the 06 NBA draft (a record at the time) 06-07 As a result of the previous draft, the first truly down season for UConn. Finished 17-14 07-08 #16 in the country, #4 in the Big East, NCAA first round, I remember that San Diego finish vividly. Remember the Duke tournament upsets in the 2010s? 08-09 #5 in the country, #3 in the Big East, NCAA Final Four. UConn executes down the stretch against Michigan State, this could've been #5 for Calhoun 09-10 another down year after another big draft year. Finishes 18-16, NIT second round. 10-11 #10 in the country, wins Maui, wins Big East Tourney, Wins National Title, on the back of Kemba Walker. One of the best single post season performances by any player in NCAA history 11-12 20-14 record, NCAA first round 12-13 Sanctioned from post-season play, some big players transfer out, end the year 20-10, first season under Kevin Ollie 13-14 #18 in the country, first year in AAC conference due to conference realignment, National Champs 14-15 NIT First Round, first glimpses at Kevin Ollie recruiting in the AAC 15-16 25-11 record, AAC Tourney Champs, NCAA Second round 16-17/17-18, truly down years for UConn, including a year that vacated wins from one season, Kevin Ollie fired 18-19 First Dan Hurley year, still recruiting in AAC, finished 16-17 record 19-20 Finished 19-12 because of COVID shortened post season 20-21 return to the Big East, #3 in the Big East, NCAA first round 21-22 #21 in the country, #3 in the Big East, NCAA first round 22-23 #10 in the country, #4 in the Big East, NCAA Champs According to these results, there's 5 truly bad years between the 99 title and the 2023 title, all because of graduating/drafted players or conference realignment (fuck college football). I'd put this resume up against any of the blue bloods. They were consistently in postseason play, they consistently were securely above .500 winning percentage, they were consistently ranked in the Top 25 in the country. There wasn't a period of 6-7 years where they were truly bad. The Kevin Ollie years were the only truly down years since pre-Calhoun, and that was less than a handful of seasons. If you want to put UConn at the bottom of the list of blue bloods that's fine, but they are blue bloods now. Period.

As of today in 2024, UConn now has 6 national championships and if you add the UConn women’s 11 championships, they have a combined 17 national championships for their basketball programs by themselves. That is unprecedented levels of success that you don’t see an entire program with what Jim Calhoun and Geno Auriemma brought when they were first hired, and obviously the greatness/ success has carried over w/ their consistency.

As a Tar Heel fan, sure I would welcome UConn to the Blue Bloods. Great Program. The one small issue is what the meaning of Blue Blood is. Its not only the ''color of blue'' (of which the name comes from) but the fact that the history, going back decades, with all the success of the programs. Even when not winning the ncaa, a great season with talented players is part of the deal. So the remark about UCLA being pretty much out of it, even though true, had its Wooden era that was remarkable in every aspect. The Blue Blood tradition is steep in history and tradition.

Nonetheless UCLA is still considered a blue blood because of the sheer amount of titles they possess and having been to the title game and final four a total of 10+ times. The only team that isn’t among the blue bloods anymore is Indiana. Only 6 total title game appearances, and only 8 total final fours not to mention 0 natty’s in the last 36 years, 0 title game appearances in the last 21 years, and 0 final fours in the last 21 years. Compare that to the actual true blue bloods like KU, UNC, UK, Duke, and UCLA where all have been to the title game and final four a total of 10+ times.
@wiltchamberlainisthegoat138 ай бұрын
UCLA did go to 3 straight Final Fours in 2006, 2007, 2008 losing in all 3. However, college basketball is not like pro sports where it’s win a championship because nothing else matters. In college basketball, it’s WAY harder to win the national championship than to win a Super Bowl or World Series because THERE ARE WAY WAY MORE TEAMS. In college basketball, making a FINAL FOUR is a HUGE accomplishment. Every year, college basketball fans look at all-time FINAL FOUR Appearances.
