I'd say they're more directionless. Outside of the core business of access points & switches they seem to be constantly throwing new products against the wall to see what sticks, all the while they can't keep items in stock. It's hard to blame the chip shortage for inventory issues when there is always plenty of silicon for the early access store.

That's a very good point. That would explain why it seems like their priorities are always out of whack. They have a few products now, like the dream wall, where I just don't see a circumstance in which I would deploy them.
@focusedelectronics Жыл бұрын
I’d agree. If they’d spend half the time they do throwing darts at a wall with odd items, they could keep actual products that people are interested in available.

@@simple_networks I have/had few deployment opportunities for Dreamwall, like for example small dental office. Went with UDM pro + talk and wifi AP's around. It's just a pity that here in EU right now getting hands on one is difficult and unreliable. I'm not going to offer customer deployment on a product that's a unicorn. It needs to be available.Heck it's easier to get hands on Unify talk products than to get a hands on dreamwall.

I’d agree with them wanting you to be part of their OS. I don’t see any reason why they wouldn’t want you to. Only problem is you can’t get half the items when you need them…. Fix the supply Ubiquiti and people might buy into your eco system more…

I think your observation is spot on. I've been using and recommending Ubiquiti almost from its beginnings. Until last month, I had no reservations about that recommendation for home or most SMB installs. The one thing that I just ran into that has caused me to hesitate now in recommending their UniFi line is that the latest U6-LR WAPs that I deployed have a very apple-esk 'feature' if it is powered by anything other than a UniFi PoE switch (I did not have a suitable non-UniFi PoE switch on hand to try but I assume that I would still see the message as I plugged them into several different UniFi-branded PoE injectors, including the 60 watt PoE++ injector, and it still displays the 'warning') it adds an entry to the config section that recommends using a low power mode to avoid shutdowns. Plug it into even a first gen UniFi PoE switch and the warning isn't there. Obviously a scare tactic to sell their switches. Part of their apparent shift to a walled garden approach. Too bad...

so for clarification you do know that one of the old Apple Executives is part of Ubiquiti ?
@simple_networks Жыл бұрын
You mean "is", right? In which case yes, I did know that!

Fun fact, former apple employees founded the company

if they stayed focused with networking wifi, cameras, access, power delivery, then partnered with a respeced firewall company.. sonicwall/fortinet they would be DAMN hard to beat for price/performance.. that said they get a good firewall it would be hard to dispute

In Canadian Store Cloud Key is under OS consoles

Great, video. I just bought in…but in a small way. Cloud Key Gen2 + and G4 Doorbell. My main concern is that I hope I don’t regret buying the DM SE instead (home and small photography business set-up). We’ll see. Hoping they don’t stop support for the Cloud Key!

I wouldn’t be surprised, the founder of Ubiquiti Networks is an ex-apple engineer 😅

I actualy Swich my home network from Synology to Unifi and I looking for what devices I intrested to buy I find the same as You on EU UI store but I think You kinda wrong about category changes on UI store website and I think that is good for new users of Unifi who start to go in Unifi SDN. Forexample myself. When I starting buying unifi devices I buy a APs then swiches and UDM SE at last seplaceing Synoology Router mesh system to Unifi. On my point of wiew better way to bulding network is to buy a new network devices with probably longer life time of updates and support then buy a old device wichout good hardware power to run new functions forexample IPS/IDS or new WPN types of servers. another thing: How long will be supporeded for exanple USG on newer versions of Unifi Network? - for me is not good to buy old unifi hardware. - About UCK Gen 2 plus I think meybe that is good move to locate that device on UNVR dection on UI Store for me I probably Use that device as UNVR if I buy a IP camera 1 - 4 for te setup like this: UDR as router and AP, small poe Swich G3 Flex and UCK gen 2 plus - that is only a small example becouse UDR have low power CPU and Network and Protect is a long term died for that device (I tested it - I buyght UDR ad my first unifi router and I was disapointed) secound reason is this On UDR You have only 128 GB SSD for protect and limit for 2 cameras max. BTW Before I swich to UDM SE I use a Docker image of Unifi SDN hosted on my Synology NAS to manage my unifi devices thats why for me personaly buying UCK gen 2 Plus nis not a good option

I absolutely agree. And to your commenter below, they (imho) are doing tactical "shortages." Ethical? Not in the least bit. Smart? Absolutely. They have taken ahold of the "prosumer" market and are running with it. It makes sense, not every Tom, Dick and Harry needs (or can afford) a Cisco Meraki, but they also don't want their Charter modem/router combo to handle their security for their home network.
@focusedelectronics Жыл бұрын
Maybe so maybe not I guess, seems odd though to have things like their door bell pro out of stock for 7+ months now at this point. I would assume more people would buy if they had stock available instead of launching some EA thing every other week.

I don't think this is much of a change of direction. They have pretty much always been: Ubiquiti first, everything else if we have some extra time waiting for suppliers.
@FriscoBoatersGarage Жыл бұрын
This is not news at all. They have always had the cloudkey in the background but is used for the USG Pro stuff, not the consumer level dream garbage. Its more for a business solution and we buy that stuff through a hidden website.

I have a first gen cloud key. I'm much better served by a Debian VM running Unifi counsle now. But this is in my home with under 60 network devices.
