They still continued with the investor conference after he died and posted up the application for his job only an hour or two afterwards on the same day. At least they have the same callousness towards life to their own. But that puts forth a question. Are we okay with being treated this way? Like numbers on a spreadsheet? Obviously the majority are not, considering the outrage in this country.

@cory23e - 100%. I was coming here to write this. While I’m not military, I trained in multiple martial arts disciplines with judo being my strongest style. The way I was trained was likely similar to you in that it was made VERY clear to us that once a person loses consciousness, a ticking clock begins. From that point on, their brain is not receiving oxygen and the longer that clock runs, the more permanent damage you are causing. At two minutes, significant brain damage is likely, and at three minutes, death is all but certain. From the implementation of a blood choke, in my experience it takes roughly 10-20 seconds for the person to lose consciousness based on multiple factors. If my concern was truly the people on the train, I’d have let go after he lost consciousness. As you know, when the hold is released, it’s not like the person wakes up and is ready for combat. They are usually confused and it takes them a while to get their bearings. So releasing him would have provided time to restrain him in a joint lock to prevent him from hurting anyone. Continuing the hold for six minutes is intentional killing someone. If the guy wasn’t trained, maybe I could see it, but no one who is trained would ever keep someone in a chokehold for six minutes unless killing the other person was their goal. And anyone who brings up adrenaline as an excuse has never been in a dangerous situation. Adrenaline will distort time, but six minutes with no additional threats to monitor and an unconscious opponent will still feel like a very very long time. Had that jury been filled with martial artists and military personnel, people with knowledge and experience when it comes to fighting and combat, there is no way he is found not guilty. As for the UNH CEO, he’s responsible for the deaths of more innocent people than Fat Man and Little Boy, so I have no sympathy for him at all and I only hope that jury realizes that there’s no penalty for “wrong” answers.

But I’ve seen so many people denied access to rehab and put myself and my family into medical debt going through treatment in the past despite my mom’s high deductible insurance. There’s a good chance that they’re only looking out for their Democrat buddies rather than someone who’s wealthy, as I can’t see them caring this much if it was Elon Musk who was bumped off. If anything, the problems you see would only get worse under a socialist or communist system as power gets consolidated into the hands of the few to oppress the masses.

OK, tiny thought experiment. A 2008 study puts UNH at 26000 claims denied. This has most definitely gone up. But for simplicity sake we'll say they rejected 26000 claims this year. If even 1 percent of those claims (260 people) died due to their claim being denied (this is also most likely MUCH higher) that would put our dearly departed CEO at BARE minimum somewhat responsible for the unnecessary suffering and death of over 200 people. Keep in mind, his claim denial rate increased exponentially to about 30 percent and it's not 2008 so they most likely had claims in the 10's of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands. He is not "somewhat" responsible. He's highest on the pyramid, and should be treated as such. He's responsible for deaths of innocent people. He played stupid games, and won a stupid prize. What happened to Jordan Neely was appalling. Being abandoned by his father at 8, having mental health problems not addressed by the system or BLM when they were known. His mother was murdered when he was 14. After his assault of an elderly woman he was given the opportunity via rehab, a place to stay, free food, and as long as he completed the program his assault charge was going to be reduced. He walked out after 13 days, and a warrant was out for his arrest. NOBODY in his family or life did anything for him, and they allowed him to delve further into a horrible situation. Now, AFTER his death, his father, family and BLM are screaming for money and violence. They didn't step in before, they didn't care before. They only see the opportunity in his death to grift and play the race card. It really is a tragedy that noone in his life cared about him until they could use him. It's criminal, and it's even worse when the sentiment is touted by privileged grifters trying to ride that gravy train made of his blood online. If you all actually cared, you'd be volunteering and donating to shelters. Not trying to collect a paycheck and clout from his death. If the people screaming the loudest had actually DONE something for people in his situation, he never would have been there in the first place. If the politicians these people voted for in these large cities actually did anything of value, they'd have actual, working programs in place. Instead you have multi-million dollar money laundering schemes like Newsom put into place in california. So get off your soap box and actually do something of value, go participate in a solution, go volunteer to help these people. Go involve yourself in action, and stop expecting everyone else to foot the work to fix the problems you grift off of.

I used to run a significant portion of a large homeless assistance org in the SF Bay Area. I have always been pretty leftist, even before I was exposed to the writings and ideas that now form my political stance and have underpinned my career, I remember being *horrified* by things that the people around me cheered (Guiliani's tanks spring lightly to mind, I think I was in middle school at the time?) But I cannot even remotely express the way in which working face to face with hundreds of unhoused people in the beginning of my 20s set the stage for an entire career in social justice, and utterly reshaped how I saw the role of systemic injustice on people on the street, and later in pretty much every issue. First, let me say that I agree with Leeja entirely about feeling unsafe and how much it sucks. I am now disabled, I have a C3-5 incomplete spinal cord injury and am wheelchair dependent outside of my house. I am also a recent survivor of long-term domestic abuse, something not at all rare in the disability and chronic illness community. The fact that crime has always been correlated with poverty does not mean I want to give up my safety and freedom to move through the world without fear of assault--something I already have high anxiety about because of my marriage. With that said, I wish I could take the Ben Shaboingo's of the world and put them through a week at my old job. While some people passed through or only showed up occasionally, there was a core group who visited our free dining room every day, and I got to know some of them and their stories really well. So many Americans have this narrative around "the homeless" as though they are a monolith and not only is it inaccurate, it's reductive. I had MULTIPLE clients who had an assessed intellectual age of 10yrs old or less--but without family to help them navigate the system, they ended up sleeping under overpasses. Also, how do you apply for benefits without an address? What if you can't read? (Unrelated to that job, I had friends who graduated Oakland High who couldn't read this very comment.) How do you apply for a job when you haven't had a real shower in months? I saw multiple people with raging cancers which were going untreated because they couldn't get care. I had one woman who had trouble getting work due to a facial disfigurement her husband had left her with. This is the very definition of injustice, particularly in a nation as wealthy as the U.S. These are humans, man--and I think that is ultimately the most difficult barrier to leap in truly changing things. So many Americans see those in need as a nebulous idea, not *people*. But they are people, and none of them thought they would end up where they did any more than anyone reading this does right now. They all have childhood memories and favorite popsicles and tell funny jokes....and not one single one of them was where they were out of laziness. Being unhoused is beyond brutal--no one would CHOOSE it over a job and an apartment with a cat waiting for them when they get home. Part of me feels like if more people had the experience I did of truly getting to see the situation out there, we could affect more systemic change--but let's be real. If the ruling class had any empathy to begin with, it wouldn't have taken me 4½yrs and almost losing my life to get out of my marriage when it got really bad, right? Anyway, I'll roll off the comments soapbox (thanks for having a ramp!)....the dehumanization of people in need is something that sits permanently in a very tender spot in my heart. I had clients 20yrs ago that I still think of all the time; I wonder if they are alive or not, if they suffered, if they knew that they mattered to me....the powerlessness in the face of such a huge issue was genuinely difficult on my mental health. I won't stop doing everything I can--even if that is just annoyingly hopping on every comments soapbox I can and pointing out that each and every one of these people were loved and valued by someone, and deserved far far better than we ever gave them.

Something about him being the hero we deserve, but not the hero we need. We need a nonviolent solution. What Penny did was fine, right up until the threat was subdued and he kept doing it anyways. Self defense is doing the absolute minimum to subdue or escape a threat, it's not carte blanche to kill someone who was a threat. All Penny had to do was stop once Neely was no longer a threat, as the people around him told him to do. How the jury didn't think this was murder is beyond my comprehension. Self defense stopped as soon as Neely stopped. Also we could get into all the other things that could have been doing to keep him restrained after taking him down besides using a choke hold, but that's a whole other can of worms.

Daniel Penny's a Marine, specifically trained to know when a blood choke goes on long enough to kill somebody. He knew exactly what he was doing and deliberately chose not to stop. That's murder in my book, and he shouldn't have been acquitted. That case and the CEO case are two complete different things. One was the murder of the mentally ill, the other was the assassination of a CEO who caused more deaths than that mental guy could've ever hoped to across his entire life. Not the same. Edit: to those of you defending Penny, please note that several bystanders pleaded with Penny to stop, one of them even outright calling out "you're gonna kill him now!" The video shows Penny keeping Neely in the chokehold a full minute after the latter had already gone limp. Police confirm that Neely's pulse was faint when they got to the scene, and Neely was soon after pronounced dead-on-arrival at the hospital. The medical examiner confirms that Neely died due to the pressure exerted on his neck by Penny, a trained Marine who understood precisely what he was doing. Penny killed that man, and he shouldn't have been acquitted.

Jordan deserved better. He needed help, and while the others felt unsafe, that is not a reason to physically do such an act. Anyone who has worked in mental wards and actually understands it, knows during a meltdown any physical restriction has to be very specific and cautious, without lethal threat. And there are other methods to try before resorting to it. This strikes me as very similar to cops in schools killing autistic kids (especially if black) because they had a meltdown or broke a rule and were pinned down for it instead of given ANY support on calming down with known and proven methods of mental health support.

This video was very well done and comprehensive and I agree with you for the most part, however I do have a problem with what you said about Josh Shapiro signing “literal bombs to kill people in cold blood in an attempt to resolve policy differences and express an ideological viewpoint” (15:27) I would like to point out that the bombs in question were sent to Ukraine, which is actively fighting a defensive war against Russia after Russia illegally invaded its sovereign territory. Ukraine is using those bombs to defend itself from its attacker, not to “kill people in cold blood” as you suggested. Maybe you didn’t know that the bombs were being sent to Ukraine and perhaps thought they might be being sent to Israel instead, at which point I would completely understand. It’s an easy mistake to make. I’m not trying to accuse you of anything or come off as aggressive, I just wanted to point it out. I enjoyed the video and found it pretty enlightening. This comment will probably be buried lmao

To answer the question in the title: sometimes, but it doesn't have to be. The establishment refused to help the vulnerable and stop the evil insurance company. They should see it coming. Daniel Penny isn't a hero. There is no justice chocking a homeless guy in crisis to death even in the given context
@Xershade
@Xershade 2 ай бұрын
Yeah see self defense was a defense, right up until the person he was choking out stopped being a threat. You can't defend yourself from a non-existent threat. That's what the jury clearly didn't comprehend. What he initially did he might have had a justification for, what he did after the threat was subdued and people were telling him to stop is not. Meh, always the OJ route for the family.

Yeah, she's following the racial narrative a bit too tightly. While race certainly played a role, as it often does, it doesn't strike me as significant to the proceedings as the media and the public would have you believe. Daniel Penny killed someone, albeit perhaps not intentionally, so he should probably have caught a charge like so many before him. It's really quite easy to turn a simple fight into a manslaughter charge.

As an activist and independent journalist, I've been supportive of homeless people for almost 30 years. Something has shifted though in recent years: as a low-income 60-something year old woman, I've been THREATENED many times when I didn't immediatly give money! One homeless man SPIT IN MY FACE when I said "It's the end of the month. I'm sorry." Another struck my head & then shoved me to the ground. In ALL these incidents the violence (or threat of it by YELLING at me) included me being called "An OLD WH*TE BI*CH" I still care about homeless people...but, there are REAL reasons that people can be AFRAID of them.

I don't want violence to be the answer, but what is the point of making a reasonable argument with those who do not listen to reason? It is blindingly obvious that dead people do not pay insurance premiums, do not book follow-up appointments, and do not buy additional drugs. Keeping your customers alive tends to be a prerequisite for repeat business. So when investors won't invest and instead take a money now approach - even if it sacrifices their ability to continue to profit and kills people, there is a line crossed. Even by their own logic of profit over people, they are not making sense. There is also a big difference between protesting a singular business or a government. A government can't get up and relocate and no law they pass matters if there is no one to carry it out. Large corporations are far more flexible in that regard.

Let us not forget Kyle Rittenhouse who crossed state lines with a weapon and was dropped off by him mom for his mission of a night of vigilantism. MAGA elevated him to Rock Star status, raising millions to pay his defense fees (and probably leave him wealthy), showcasing him at multiple events where he strutted onstage with light shows and celebratory music, and then promised him a congressional internship. I don’t know if he got that position out of the spotlight but his momentary fame surely messed with an already twisted mind. That level of public folk hero worship was hideous but completely normalized.
