I am so glad I went with a 3500 Dodge Van built by Alex and Sarah. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, has ever broken, and I have been on the road for over four years. I used to plan my routes and stay at campgrounds, and sometimes I still do. However, I often stay on BLM, National Forest, or rest stops. I can park on the street in cities and towns and have even slept in my van at night with no hassle. I would change two things: having a shower(it takes up a lot of room) - I used Planet Fitness or Camp showers 99 percent of the time. The second thing is my Refrigerator; it works great but is basically on the floor. I have to get on my hands and knees to get stuff out of the back of the Refrigerator, which is a bummer at my age. Well, I love your channel and learn new things all the time. Thanks! 😎🚐🥾

Hi Robyn, yes, I'm very happy with my 2012 Roadtrek RS Adventurous and I've had it for 7 years. There's no perfect RV. If it has wheels, it has problems. Although we've had some issues, the Roadtrek is very well made. We tour and travel; we do not live in the campervan. We don't need a lot of power, but, we do have solar and a generator. One of the best things is the OCCC.... abundant cargo capacity with the dual rear wheels. One thing I have to say is.... rent a van and see if it's right for you. Changing your rig is very expensive, you've been very lucky with resale. Not everyone will be that lucky. Good videos.

If I were to purchase a rig on this list it would be Ram Pro-master then putting a grocery getter lift with rear locking differential so I could still tuck myself into the mountains. I looked at multiple options and was not happy with any of them. I had a list of needs (power to work on the road) and wants (indoor toilet). Because I was not able to find anything filling a lot of that list - I built my own in the end. I 100% love my 5 X 10 converted cargo trailer that I pull with my 4Runner. I know how to fix it all. Breaking camp is a breeze. I can lock up my trailer and run into town or to attractions and my clearance is high enough I can find camp spots most can not get to (which is good because I'm not a real people person). I will let you know that I took a lot of that list and saw how the industry was doing it and built it into my rig. I actually have a indoor and outdoor bathroom but no plumbing per se (no freeze issues). I have a covered outdoor kitchen (fully powered with refrigerator) so not to have cooking odors while sleeping but I can pull parts of that in if I choose to cook inside. I actually heat with wood pellets and have propane as a secondary source. No A/C but 4-wheel drive gets me high in the mountains. And as for working wherever - I have Starlink and built the ultimate power system for my needs. Now, I am a no-frills girl. But many have commented that my CCT is a very homey travelling cottage. I have a lot of storage because I have the two rigs and both can carry decent weight.

I began full-timing decades ago in a 31' Airstream pulled with a Suburban. Got around 10 miles per gallon. At that point, I was doing seasonal jobs taking a month to meander to the next location. So most of the time I was stationary. The space and layout were wonderful for that lifestyle. Kitchen big enough to cook holiday meals, canning foods, etc. Storage and living space are big enough to pursue indoor hobbies without constantly moving them. Life changes next brought a '70s era VW comping van into my life. Poor mileage for the size, lots of mechanical issues, was very driving in the mountains. It's a fun weekend rig or brief vacation. Not great for full timing. Life brought another break from it to provide end-of-life support for both parents. Now looking towards a van. Would love a truck camper but the cost to purchase both makes a van the best option for me. I won't be pursuing as much seasonal work. So I'll be driving more frequently making mpg, ease of parking, and finding camping spots more important. I have found that longer stays cause me to want more living space. Frequent travel keeps me busy enough that I have less time for the activities I need more space to pursue.

Yes, it would be a truck camper for me for a no-tow rig you can park. For some reason I'm just not a fan of the boxiness of vans. Truck campers may be smaller but somehow _feel_ larger being separated from the driver cab. I like the two separated.

After owning over a dozen rigs I've become a huge fan of Truck Camper. I use my truck for day to day and then put the camper on for comfortable travel anywhere in a nearly normal vehicle footprint. Took the truck camper to Tuktoyaktuk (Arctic Ocean) and all over Alaska last September and I wouldn't want to do that trip in any other rig. We take extended trips into western USA and all over on the regular. We now have an Arctic Fox 1150 with a full length slide and it's completely fantastic. Tons of room. edit: Important caveat because this "best of" would depend entirely on your truck. We have a Ford F450. Personally I would never take extended trips with a TC with anything smaller than a one ton dually.

Just can't help but think the simplest life is a small home on 10 acres. A large garage and a small truck camper. Robin, you do a great job of not loosing money with these changes and repairs. At the same time, there is no way to build equity like there is with a home on owned land.

Some of us have all that and are ready to play the camping/nomad roll for part of our life. Keeping the weeds at bay and not being able to travel long distances because the landscape needs constant care, especially water gives home ownership challenges also. If I lived where it rains frequently it might be possible to spend 2-3 months traveling at a time in the warmer months of the year. Not true for those of us who live in the desert.

Husband and I have been in a 37' Class A (Newmar Bay Star). We've been full-time since November 2019...still love the rig. We spent several years beforehand looking at different options for us and had thought it through in terms of type and floor plan. This has a bath and a half, washer and dryer. It's big and tough to get into and out of a gas station (and we tow a Jeep). But we're comfortable and travel slowly. We added solar and lithium batteries, so boondock easily except in the summer. If I were a solo traveler, I'd definitely want a campervan, but for two people the Bay Star is a winner.

Neat video. I built my own rig and let me tell you about repairs. Oh wait there aren't any. I have 630 watts of solar, AC, heat, Microwave, TV and 30 gallons of fresh water. I forgot a dorm style refrigerator/freezer. Twenty two feet long and a gas engine. I did just replace the air filter at 22,000 miles and of course some oil changes. Set up and breakdown is a snap and I can get in to parking spots easily.

Robin- There is a fairly new but widely accepted way to recharge your house batteries. It has been done for decades in the marine market. That is to add a second high power alternator, following the engine maker's specifications, that is used only to recharge the house batteries. These can easily be over 200 Amps at 48 volts, so a 48-to-12 volt converter may also be needed. But this means an hour or two of travel or idle time can recharge a very large battery bank--and solar panels become irrelevant. Obviously, witn a towed trailer you will need to plug in a connecting cord. Some vans can be ordered with this factory installed. Not a solution for everyone, but a reasonable alternative for many.

Unless you hat the noise of an engine or motor. Thank you for the idea. Great for many but, I'll stick with solar.

ME! I have a Mini Winnie 25ft. I can go anywhere and sleep 8 if necessary. Had mine 10 years this year. There’s a reason there are soooo many on the road. I have a HUGE basement, so I carry plenty of solar for our needs. I rarely pay for a camp when I’m home, but can usually find low cost state parks or national parks when I have to. We chose no slides to cut down on the number of things to go wrong and have never missed all the ‘bells and whistles.’ In our previous 10 years, we had a tiny T@B, and the real reason we moved up was the set up hassle. We ain’t getting any younger and love the ability to usually just plug and play.

Interesting that you seemed to like the campervan the most, it is the largest growing segment in RVs today. My Roadtrek RS Adventurous is based on a Sprinter 3500 cargo van and converted by Roadtrek Motorhomes. I would say that the only thing you have to realize is that there is limited space. We just have learned to take less stuff. I would never consider living full time in the rig; it's just too small. And, you're right, fuel mileage is extremely important.

We bought a 2016 30’ 5th wheel from Outdoors and have been on the road since April. Nothing’s broken structurally but having 8yo technology we have a few glitches that we deal with work arounds. Our fireplace gives heat and so if we need warmth we use it. A couple of times we needed to use the furnace (April/early May in southern Alberta & Montana this year was crazy cold). It’s 12’5” tall including the ac so haven’t had issues yet. It’s 8’ wide & our RAM 3500 diesel dually is wider! It also hauls like a dream. We chose a fifth wheel for the stability in towing & the dually to add to the towing stability. Semis passing & most winds don’t move it. Any wind that would knock a semi around, we shouldn’t be on the road! If I were solo I’d take a good sized Ram van that I don’t feel claustrophobic in. And I can do my hobbies without having to change things out.

We've lived full-time in two different 40+ feet fifth wheels since 2008. We only boon docked during blow-and-go times while we were in transit, which meant for us parking lot or Harvest Host overnights. Regarding propane usage v. electricity, we only use propane when we have to and for our stove top. Our second rig came with something called Cheap Heat, which was added after the initial build. That gave us a choice to run the heat by electricity v. propane. Many times in a park, if you stay a week or a month you get a discount so you pay electric, but often the discounted rent was more than the electricity cost which made the convenience and availability of using electric Cheap Heat v. propane the way to go. We've got two 40 gal tanks and I only use propane for the stovetop now and I probably filled only one tank of propane in close to five years. NGL, where we live right now the electric bill is higher than the rent in summer, but I'm not strong enough to wrestle the tank out of the bay to get it to the curb to be filled. Cheap Heat was an awesome add-on and no one told us about it; the prior owner put it in and I'm so thankful. We do have a propane generator which is a good thing, but if the power went out for extended days we'd need to refill our propane tanks to run it continuously. I'd have to get help to do that.

Travel trailers can be similar to the Wayfarer van, the simpler you go, the fewer problems you're likely to have. The fewer slides, complicated systems etc, the better and often less expensive. If you go with smaller teardrop style TTs you can find smaller better quality manufacturers which will also be easier and less expensive to tow.

So I was an outdoorsy person when I met my husband but I wasn't a 'camper'..... been there done that in a tent in my younger years and was over it! But when I met my husband he had an 18 ft bumper pull travel trailer that he kept on the coast to spend weekends when he wasn't working. As soon as I knew we were going to be serious, I quickly talked him into a fifth wheel because I already had a truck and had been hauling cattle with a gooseneck trailer. So our first fifth wheel was about 20 ft or so but after a couple of years we traded up for a 24-foot, then a 29 ft, then a 30ft gas motorhome and finally a 40 ft Diesel Pusher when he retired. We took one big trip in the 40 ft and when we got home he was diagnosed and passed away 5 months later. I didn't have a problem driving but I did not like the maintenance on something that large. Besides when I go camping I spend most of my time Outdoors anyway and I did not want to take a house with me every time I camped. So I took the 40-footer out for one last camping trip on my own and knew for sure then it had to go. I waited about 5 years and then I got a 7 ft teardrop to pull behind my truck. The setup is so easy and it provided all I needed: a place to cook in a cool place to sleep. But after 2 years and me getting older I realize I would now wanted a camper with a bathroom so now I think I have my final camper and I'm very happy with it! It's a 20 ft fiberglass travel trailer that has simple amenities and no propane to deal with. I don't live in my campers and I don't care to Boondock, but if the weather is nice, it's doable. And of course I like having my truck since I've always had a truck and they always come in handy

I LOVE my options which I have had for over 9 years. First, my van. Although I’m doing four months across country in him and third of the time in hotels, he’s usually just my weekender. The van is a beast and can tow either my 19’ Shasta, which I usually summer in, or my 24’ Lance, though it kind of stays at my home base. When I tow the Shasta, I have a vehicle to get around in or even to take off in for another weekend. How I got so lucky to come up with this combination, I do not know.

Omgosh, thank you so much Robin!!! That was an EXCELLENT breakdown on winners and losers!!! I totally agree on all your research/experience!!! Had a Class C, 9 mpg on hwy. Now have a 24' trailer. But I want to go toa Wayfarer Camper Van.

This is a great video looking at all your RVs. I'm going with a small Escape 5.0 TA fiberglass 5th wheel. I like the idea of parking the 5th wheel and going to see sites with a truck.

So lucky with our Winnebago Aspect 27k motorhome. Yep, regular maintenance ain't cheap but we have just been downright lucky with repairs, etc. Crap on gas mileage but would rather spend it on that than repairs. Lucky, lucky, lucky. Fingers crossed it stays that way.

Love my 2017 class c. Solo sr 70 yr old. I can just go and have my creature comforts. 24 ft it’s fairly easy to handle. I think the smallness of a van would make me crazy.

Great video! Had no idea you've had the variety of camper's shown today. Thank you for the review. It was well put together and thought out. Thumbs up!😎👍

Yes, I agree, “It was well put together and thought out.” We we get to benefit from that knowledge. :)

Husband and self have a 19’ traveltrailer. We’ e modded the heck out of it and do love it. But….we are looking to get a van for freedom from rv parks, quicker set up/break down time and super easy bathroom/lunch breaks!

Wow! Thank you so much, Robin! I've been living in my 28' travel trailer for a year and am very happy, but I am staying in the same place for 6 months at a time for various reason - a big one is that I hate towing and hooking up and unhooking it. I am thinking about getting something smaller in the future and traveling more. I was attracted to those class b+ campers. I'm so glad I watched this video.

Great points you have made! I have a 2500 Promaster 159 that I built out. I love the fact if something goes wrong, I can figure it out:) Just looking forward to taking longer trips than weekends... Thank you for posting great content!

About repairs, my grandma used to say 'throw money at the problem'. If you can afford it, don't worry about it. If you have to do your own repairs, listen carefully to Robin 😊

1 toyhauler TT 36ft, 1 fifthwheel, 1 class C, two travel trailers, 3 live aboard boats, 4 truck bed campers, and a couple tents. My wife and I are the only users. Need to tow a 5k boat, need to launch and retrieve a boat daily when camping, need to go exploring in a vehicle when camping. Often on the move, often staying for 2 weeks. Going back to a "LARGE" truck camper in 4 months from my 22' travel trailer.

Great presentation. I learned so much. I’m retired and want to see the USA with My dog in vacation mode and 4 day weekends. You sold me on the wayfare van. Plus I can park it in my driveway and not pay for storage.
@inthesky78363 ай бұрын
wayfare is just a built out van... those like mine can be built out by many other builders or get it custom built or used on craigslist. Solo wise, its the best option

Thank you for that little bit of info on the Starlink. We just purchased a Bluetti 200L and we're hoping it can keep up with our Starlink always being plugged in. 👍

For me it comes down to two questions. Do you want to boondock or go to campgrounds/RV parks? And do you want to leave camp and come back? If leave and come back you need a towable, truck camper, or tow a separate car. If you want to boondock you need to access remote areas, so preferrably smaller with 4wd and high clearance, so van/class B/truck camper. Some people can get a fifth wheel back in tight spaces, but don't just assume you have those skills. Answer these two questions first and you can figure out the rest.

I chose a small travel trailer and a 4Runner. I didn't want to have to break camp every time I needed to go somewhere. Camp is exploring a local area for me. I also wanted an SUV as a daily driver and not a truck
@kimdagnillo82463 ай бұрын
Love the 4Runner but the mpg is bad, then you pull and get nothing
