I usually wait at least two months before I buy something. But it really just works out to having a Christmas list of stuff I want that I slowly move through because 99% of the time I still want the thing two weeks, two months, or two years later.

I think one overlooked thing when it comes to FOMO in this case is the disproportionately high levels of neurodivergent people in the hobby, which often makes them more vulnerable to aggressive sales tactics. Especially ADHD which is massively prevalent within the Warhammer community

It's funny that crowdfunding projects like Kickstarter tend to be solely a FOMO thing too. Back now or miss out the biggest bargain of your time ! Even if you'll never use all these 100+ miniatures dumped at you. I still have hundred of miniatures from an old Raging Heroes crowdfunding project in boxes. Sounded like a great deal at the time years ago, but their only purpose so far is to gather dust in my storage room. When I backed it, I wanted to build a full female imperial guard army. The time I got them sent at my home, my projects changed and I ended up with models I suddenly had no interest into. Nowadays, I tend to stay out of Kickstarter and the like...especially if they're physical products.

It's definitely both. Corporations create artifical FOMO as a predatory tactic to people with addictive personalities, especially since hobbies like this are actually a crutch for people who are recovering alcoholics, gamblers, etc.

@@doubletire I'm going to guess you genuinely have zero idea what you're talking about. I've seen recovering alcoholics drink hand sanitizer right in front of me and act like it was nothing, these are the kinds of people that can get sucked into a hobby and become just as attached to it as they did with a past vice. I know two people who have had to sell (or felt compelled to do so, at the very least) personal possessions to fuel the FOMO, which I admit is insane but there's a reason GW and big companies do it. They don't give a shit about your home life, they just want your money in any way they can get it.

Fomo is toxic, I was really tempted to buy the new blood angels box set.. but then I snapped back into reality and realised I’d be paying £140 ish for 2 models I want and a bunch of rubbish I don’t need. I’ll gladly wait till the full release

It obviously works for them (well that and the lure of the 'deal'). But I always say unless I want all the models in the box it's not really a deal.
@sonicwingnut
@sonicwingnut 6 ай бұрын
While I actually do want all the Blood Angels box, I got around that with other releases by just selling everything I didn't want then keeping the cool mini I did want - so I got Vashtorr for nothing, Angron for £20, and actually paid for some armies by splitting Age of Darkness and Leviathan boxes. Rather than scalping with those big boxes you can sell stuff for way below retail prices and still make a profit.
@piotrjeske4599
@piotrjeske4599 6 ай бұрын
Well it is a few things. Some stuff comes in a limited box and then is not seen for months or rarely ever. Then there is the "core" w40k player being a 35+ dude , who is either casual (doesn't care about rules, but wants models NOW) or pro (armies have 2-3 month windows , where they are top , so you need to get them fast to enjoy playing the army/build). And then there is more general stuff , which goes beyond GW. People brains not feeling the money spent with digital transactions etc

The Kill Team season 2 short runs really put me off. To the extent that I didn’t buy anything from season 3 - Bheta Decima. I mean, I wasn’t impressed with the Bheta Decima terrain/setting, but I also wasn’t interested in having to almost buy before I tried.

I had been pretty critical in the last few Star Wars related videos, but this one was a good talk. I have noticed that I have been far happier with the hobby in general by just stepping back and slowing my purchases, and even selling stuff off I know I had purchased likely due to FOMO years ago.

I definitely have found myself unhappy when I’m playing the competitive guys. I don’t want to play at that high a level, but I also want a chance. I’m probably going to see how I can dial in on the group I want to play and make that happen. I don’t need tons of purchases but I’ll probably be excited for the stuff when my existing army comes back around for a new kit

@@timunderbakke8756 Can always play alternative rulesets with the minis you do have. Stargrave has a fantastic Solo/Co-op campaign where you are playing against space zombies and trying to survive. Grimdark Future and Xenos Rampant are very fun games that uses 40k or really any other minis you and your potential opponents have and lets you play relatively casual games with them.

It’s probably both , but to say fomo isn’t messed up wouldn’t be correct either. It’s designed as a psychological tool to prey on customers who find it hard to just say heck no. It’s about the shadiest practice or one of them. However the more you resist the fomo the less you want to buy long term, so it can be a double edged sword as once you feel left behind you just don’t care about keeping up anymore. People need to be careful on how much they pull their fomo stuff or else make customers resilient to it and just stop buying much altogether , like myself , I haven’t gotten nearly as much just because of all the fomo crap.

It’s both - GW does limited releases to drive sales that are higher than they would be. Think about the blood angels box set. How many people would buy everything in the box over time? Most won’t - it’s just “the value” and the ability to get all the products first. My answer is to wait and say “do I actually want everything in the box” and if the answer is “no”, I don’t try to buy it.

Related to FOMO is the fear that you will lose out if you get rid of something you are no longer enjoying or using. Have plenty of minis and games that just never took off and they collect dust (some built and some still in boxes). It is hard to let go because there is that similar emotional investment. Some is sunk cost but some is just that fear that as soon as it is gone, you will need or want it.

I dont have fomo, but I see others with it. I buy box sets if I want all the models. Otherwise I don't get it. When my favorite faction gets their codex. I don't have a desire for the limited edition cover. If I do get it. It would be because it came in a box set and I wanted every model. Otherwise I'll just get the regular codex.

I hate the fact that I experience FOMO while buying dead games on Ebay. Confrontation, AT-43, and even a little bit of Warmachine lol...sigh. Like it's dead...why am I afraid of missing out? (My argument is that because the models are OOP, it actually is a finite limit out there, soooo that deal might be the best deal lol...I hope I'm not the only one in this aspect)

I think whatever GW is doing is the opposite of fomo. With all the big bocks coming out I don't care about any single one anymore. I own 4 Necromunda Gangs, I play in two campaigns, I didn't get the new necromunda because it was drowned in a sea of other big boxes. And honestly, these days I feel like I am getting better value from other companies, because the other reason I think GW is doing the opposite of FOMO is that not only does it diminish my interest, but it also kind of diminishes the worth on the table. By the time a normal person has painted up a big box, the models within might already be unplayable bad.

For me, it’s the books, not so much the models. I feel like I need to buy the books despite having so many still left unread. I’m reading constantly but I just hate having to wait a year for GW to release the paperback. If the book is based on a faction, It doesn’t help that there is something else released to get me itching to read the background

"fomo" gets really overused it seems like. even a store having a holiday sale is "fomo" in the sense people discuss, because it instills a "sense of urgency" due to the sale not being eternal. it really boils down to a lack of self-discipline or poor impulse control.
