@johntthurmon as someone who went to law school, it definitely has a well defined logic, Within its own system. But the POV of law school leaves little room for questioning the status quo. So its not surprising that someone who wasnt jaded by some of the horrendous things we learn there would shun humanist principles.

Why hasn't accounting been mandatory in the schools like Adam Smith implied? Smith's Wealth of Nations has been free on the Internet since 2001. Search it for "read, write and account" and you will find multiple instances not "read, write and arithmetic." He used the word 'education' Eighty Times. Apparently educators have failed to notice this. Why haven't Socialists been suggesting mandatory accounting?

I like Mr Kaplan 's opening. I hope he's correct in that even the poorest don't really need to revolt. Objective conditions are not that bad. Yes, I am poor in comparison with the 1% but I'm far from actual poverty.

The professor complaining that 100% of his income is taxed, whereas if he were a Consultant or RE Developer he'd be able to pay tax on only 80% of his income, is completely neglecting the fact that his salary is guaranteed until he retires (assuming he has tenure), and that he'll have a defined benefits package FOR LIFE upon his retirement. The Consultant or the RE developer can lose - literally - EVERYTHING in one bad deal. The Consultant or the RE developer might have to endure several years of earning ZERO DOLLARS before snagging a big contract or commencing construction on a property. And they get ZERO retirement package. They have to save up for their retirement. Given inflation, at 65 I'd want at least 5 or 10 million to feel remotely comfortable. That said, I'm poor and I'll have neither the gold-plated retirement package, nor the $5-$10 milly in the bank. Of the two, I side with the people who make it in private business. Professors and other government workers make it all sound so easy, knowing they have guaranteed six-figure salaries and guaranteed high-five-figure retirement packages. Very easy for them to shit on people trying to make it.

To me, it depends what is meant by wealth inequality. If a small percentage of people have a huge amount of wealth, but most people have a decent, middling standard of living, I don't see how it's an issue. It's more a problems when you've got a large group of people that are extremely rich, while the rest are very poor. Luckily, the second example is not the case in any modern first-world nation that I'm aware of.

@@jaceking5938 Homes are not unaffordable, they are more expensive, and it seems that a lot of it has to do with strong regulations on construction and allocation related activities in urban centers. More homes owned by less people also means cheaper rent at the very least. Isn't it normal that older people in society have more power overall? Has it never been the case that middle aged and old men had most of the power? Would it be good for teenagers to have a bunch of power in society?
