being different is so important. when i was a student in university, i sat in a lecture hall of 500 students who were pursuing the same exact degree with the same exact courseload as me. felt like a room full of clones. thinking about how to differentiate myself...i decided to focus by seeking out research opportunities, projects, and competitions that i could participate in order to build my experience and learn more about myself and what I like. it was valuable to try out frontend/backend/hardware dev, physics research, and even econometrics during these years, as it helped me realize i didn't enjoy them, so i didn't force myself to do it for the sake of finding a job. i found my interest in data engineering and infrastructure and my enjoyment and curiosity for it enabled me to work on such projects for long hours. i read books about DE for fun! and after graduating, i landed a six-figure job in big tech doing data engineering and data science. moral of the story, find what you like, work hard at it, be strategic about finding the right opportunities, and reap the rewards afterward.

Im currently building a note taking application that can import files to save within the application, or you can type them out within the application and export the notes as RTF or PDFs. It can also take in audio files and convert them into text/transcripts. And the last feature ill be implementing is it will be able to take audio or text files and have chat gpt api spit out consolidated/summarized notes. I know it is a big project but im coding 20-30 hours a week and im a quick learner. Im dedicated to completing this project fully. Im starting React in about 4 qeeks as well. I get recommended to boot camps that say "it is hard to find a web development job so I created this boot camp." There are dozens of bootcamps now. I would say they are going off out dated information when web development was popular in the 2010s. It is better to go into networking and cloud computing. If you know someone at a web development you will be fine and have a job but if you are trying to get your foot in the door then I recommend networking or cloud computing since those jobs are near as saturated.

TLDR: The barrier of entry is higher now to get into tech than it was a few years ago. So you need to know more to get hired. He goes on to make a false dichotomy by comparing a company looking to hire a webdev with a homeowner looking to hire a plumber. He states that the homeowner is willing to pay more for a plumber who can fix the problem fast even if they have to pay more, but he fails to mention that trade jobs have apprenticeships. Someone who's applying to become a junior developer is applying to the equivalent of an apprentice plumber position. Surely the market cannot sustain an environment where the bottom rungs of the ladder are missing indefinitely.
@cristian-florea-coding
@cristian-florea-coding 11 ай бұрын
I see your point. what if we switch the plumber with heart surgeon. Which one would you pick: one that just graduated magma cum laude or one that has 30000 successful operations made in the past 15 years?
@Jwhiz24
@Jwhiz24 11 ай бұрын
@@cristian-florea-coding come on, that analogy doesn't work either. You cannot become a heart surgeon directly after graduating med school. It requires additional years of residency (i.e. on the job training under a mentor) before any board will certify you to perform heart surgery. I do see what you're trying to say though. If all things are equal, you will take the more experienced person. Yet It's like you're intentionally missing my point. A career is a ladder that one climbs as you gain experience and competency. Last time I checked, ladders which are missing rungs are considered broken. const employmentPractice = () => { If (experience === inflatedExpectations) { return interview } else { return swift kick in the nuts }}

Thanks for the levels of sophistication analysis, great added value here! However I do find a gap in your reasoning, if level 5 REQUIRES 5 years of experience and you don't have them what do you do? Give up on the market? My solution to this issue is very simple, but it's not a silver bullet. Most companies ask for X amount of years because of the wrongful association of EXPERIENCE = SKILL. You can bend this to your advantage, if you can figure out what they are looking for and prove to them that you can provide that value. The caveat is getting your resume past HR, who might just look at your experience and automatically discard you, but if you find a company which looks beyond that you might have a shot.

I'm not a professional, so take this with a grain of salt. But I felt compelled to respond to your comment. My concern would be that the ATS (applicant tracking system) that companies use in HR departments would screen him out due to a lack of a relevant bachelor's degree. This process is automated; his application would be thrown away before a human would lay eyes on it. If he could get a human to view his application materials from the start, he MIGHT stand a better chance IF he's highly skilled in ways that the company needs. This is why networking is so important. It might help him sidestep some of the formalities and barriers that external applicants face. As a junior, he has to convince the employer that he won't need much training, won't bog down his teammates and superiors with questions or poorly implemented work that they'll need to clean up later, won't leave or be fired before the company can recoup the expense of hiring him, and won't be a net loss to the company. That's a LOT for someone with no formal education to promise and deliver on in the absence of years of self study and independently produced projects of a certain level of sophistication and purpose. It's terrible what the market for developers has become. And it's an unfair nightmare for juniors who dedicated years of their lives to the pursuit of this career. But my guess is that your son is going to want and need any and every advantage he can get. At the end of the day, he has to answer two questions: How will he keep himself from being screened out? And if he's not screened out, what makes him a more attractive candidate than those with relevant degrees?

Back when the market was easygoing, making an app for learning purposes with your own requirements and used by yourself was good enough, it showed that you were really interested in Software and could be taught easily for the job. But nowadays, they need people who can do the job on day 1, they have no time or money to train you or take a risk on you. So unless you can build an actual app that is used by many real users, you won't be getting noticed because the market is saturated.

Odin project in my opinion is the second best free resource after "FullStackOpen", main reason being Odin Project is too long, if you learn everything it will take a long time + no one needs to know everything, just look at job descriptions and learn what they need, why learn everything. I know this comment is months old, but... I agree that you might not have a good foundation. You might want to consider taking an introductory programming class at a community college. You'll be following a set curriculum, most likely have a text book, and be given weekly assignments that are scoped to that week's lesson. And the most valuable part of all is the feedback you'll get on each assignment combined with access to a teacher who can answer your questions. I can't tell you how valuable it is to learn the fundamentals in a structured way. Because learning bits and pieces from different curriculums here and there can cause a novice to walk away with a fractured, hazy understanding of the concepts. Because they don't quite have enough context to parse the information in a way that's meaningful to them. For example, you might find documentation to be very cryptic. But the more you know beyond the bare minimum, the easier understanding the documentation becomes and the less formal instruction you need! It becomes easier to teach yourself new things once you have a solid foundation in the things that came before it. So, don't give up because you find the material to be dense right now and you haven't retained as much as you would have liked. Maybe give an evening class at a community college a try. I personally think in person would be best for a novice, but online classes could work too IF the professor does a good job of laying out the material and offers recorded lectures (or holds live, synchronous classes at a certain time that works for you). Always remember that it's a marathon, not a sprint.

Prioritize learning the backend first. The market job market for frontend devs is hopeless. Been coding since 2010 (mostly frontend) but the amount of people trying to get into it is just ridiculous. My advice? Find a stack/technology where online resources are difficult to find. Right now tutorials/guides for backend stuff aren’t as flooded as it is in the frontend. Yes, most backend roles needs a bit more experience but at least you know how to guage how much stuff you really need to learn just to offer a business value to a company.

I don’t think it’s any easier to get hired as a back end dev. If anything, employers are more likely to require a CS degree and/or relevant experience for back end roles. I think anything programming related is very hard to get into. Heck, even entry level IT jobs like support are hard to get into for people without experience.
@unhash631
@unhash631 7 ай бұрын
@@user-ql5jk2bt9c You said it yourself. Just get a CS degree and an internship and you’re all set for an entry-level backend role. I personally know a few people without thorough knowledge about common programming principles but they still got in. That’s how much backend is needed by a lot of companies. I’m not saying that frontend isn’t important. It’s just less of a priority for them. A lot of enterprises have problems in their operations that don't even need a UI but people aren’t flocking to them because the solutions aren't using trendy technologies like ReactJS. Moreover, there are more opportunities for you to even move into more specialized roles when you start with backend. Are you really passionate about frontend? Go fullstack. Do you love working with data? Data engineering. Do you like deployment and integration systems? DevOps. It’s much easier to shift to these roles once you have a few years of experience in the backend.

As an employer I might well be willing to hire a highly skilled junior developer. I would rather pay someone less qualified 20k per annum than pay a senior developer 200k per annum if I know that the former can do a decent job. @@cristian-florea-coding By 'junior' I mean not having spent much time as a developer (6 months to 2 years). They are junior because they don't have much experience. @@alfiecollins5617 A "highly skilled" employee who produces attractive and functionally robust web products should be compensated at a rate of $10 per hour? A person who is driven enough and intelligent enough to become highly skilled will not stay long with an employer who values their contributions at $10 an hour. Or even $20 an hour. And I believe you already know that. If an employee is making valuable contributions to your company, then they should be compensated relative to the value they bring. To dock their pay based on the number of years they've been in the profession is exploitative. And I think you know that too.

usually that phrase means senior level skill set not literally senior level. Too many bad devs these days so companies need to ask for more. sad but true. there are jr dev jobs infact lot of them but if you compare requirements to pre covid jr devs it's a significant difference. One way to counter it : think before you learn, make projects dont just follow tutorials or roadmaps, make you own after studying job descriptions, various curriculums. If people just start to think again before learning this phase will pass. these days everyone makes the same projects, same clones, same portfolio honestly I don't give a crap about protfolio websites. Show me something that works. My personal experience -- made a product tracker which scraped data from e commerce sites and showed results according to the costumer, real life application -- people who are not well versed with how to use mobiles or web apps (people in rural areas) can buy stuff. This was not what I wanted to make but the original project was too complex and by tinkering stuff I reached to this one. Cleared by 2nd ever interview in my entire life with pay equivalent to 4+ times national tech avg. and 10+ times national avg pay. Sadly the company shut down recently but I know I can do it again. So honestly you need to have senior level skill set to get entry level job. I think that is what the video is trying to say as well.
