@@angelncarroll1241 Hi, I’d be happy to help. WIC needs to know the income for the household. If your boyfriend lives with you, you have to tell your WIC off how much he makes unless you are already receiving food stamps or Medicaid. If you’re on food stamps or Medicaid already, you automatically qualify for WIC and do not have to report the household’s income.

WIC helps with basic food essentials and formula. It's not like you can eat only WIC food to survive, you don't get that much, especially with a newborn. It's just formula or food for mom if you're nursing. We are using it while we pay off our debt but hopefully it isn't forever! My husband is our only income and he makes $20/hr or more, and we still qualify. Food stamp guidelines and WIC guidelines are vastly different. We haven't qualified for food stamps in 5/6 years

I said no to child care assistance when it was offered to me, not because of pride, but because we didn't need it. This particular welfare is limited and there is a waiting list that you can be on for years before you recieve it. I was able to get around the wait list according to a social worker. I knew I made enough to pay for daycare and I had someone who could watch my child for me, so it wasn't needed. I told the social worker that there is someone else who need it more and it would be wrong for me to get it over them. She actually tried to talk me out of it. This was 3 years ago, and I still haven't recieved any welfare and still living a comfortable life without. If people live within their means they can make it. Pride get in the way when you think that low income apartment or that old ride is beneath you, so you over spend on something to impress those who don'y help pay your bills.

I, for one, am very grateful for WiC. Between job losses and an unexpected (but still welcomed) second child, this program has done for us what it was originally designed for. Do people abuse it? Sure. But I'm not ashamed for making use of a resource that is available to folks like myself. For those hating on the whole waste of taxpayer money, maybe start doing what the government is doing and take care of your neighbors. We all live in communities where there needs. Some needs we can meet and some needs we need met.

One can work an entire life paying taxes and gleen little in return. There is no reason to feel guilty for taking advantage of programs designed to help instead of handicap. It doesn't make one less of a man to receive funds to help ensure a quality start in life for one's child. (Ceasing work and contribution to society altogether, expecting everyone else to pick up the tab is called "living on the dole," and isn't responsible.) Accepting help when needed, and giving back, as called upon, is being blessed in both directions.

I wish Dave Ramsey had told him more about the program itself. It's literally giving low income parents eggs and milk so they can have it in the house while they have children *under the age of five*...as in, these kids are still growing and developing rapidly and it's not a good time in their lives to fast. I believe the gov't should support parents in being good parents, aka. "grow strong bones!"

I am a breastfeeding mother. WIC really assisted me with support on breastfeeding. I recieved calls asking me how it was going and it gave me someone to call with any questions. It was a subtle supplement which my family really appreciated. They also give a free check up for your child every six monthes. One of the things they monitor is iron, which they saw my little had a lower count. I made sure she had more iron rich foods and the next check up, she was up to normal levels.

WIC is to help pregnant women, mothers, and children so they can have good nutrition. The main benefit is food stamps, EBT. If "buckling down" means limiting healthy nutritious food for his pregnant wife, then I would recommend WIC. However, if they have bad habits, especially smoking, these need to be stopped. First of all, the mother and child will be healthier. Second, the money they were spending on tobacco can now be directed towards groceries. Often parents ignore this and say , "We don't have enough money for good food." When they do, but they are spending it on unhealthy habits.

Everyday you work, the government takes from you to fund this program. Your need is what this program was designed for, and you will pay for it the rest of your life, whether you use it or not. Use it, and know that good Americans want you to have it. People like you who were brought up right and don't want to freeload are the salt of the earth, and I take my hat off to you with sincere appreciation. But understand. You are NOT freeloading. This is what WIC is designed for, you work so you pay into the fund, and you deserve to use it without shame or reservation if you qualify. Think of unemployment fees, that you and/or your employer pay into with every paycheck you earn. It is a government program that acts as insurance, and you are forced to participate. If your company goes under and you are out of work for a few weeks, you collect the unemployment check just like you would collect an insurance check if someone hit your car. There should be no shame because you funded the program, you are not trying to scam society, and you aren't making it a way of life. If everyone had your ethic and attitude toward this, America would be a greater country. Use the benefit and feel good about it. :) Finally, Uncle Dave talks a lot about beans and rice, rice and beans, and he is right in most cases. Here, I think it does not completely apply. This is a program to feed your baby nutritious food. WIC helps fend off disease and gives babies a better chance of developing strong minds and bodies. If they miss out as babies, they could suffer the rest of their lives. Tighten your belts all you want, but do not tighten your baby's belt. You have a good heart and the right attitude (one of pulling your own weight), but WIC is about the baby, not you. I wouldn't tell a freeloader not to use WIC benefits, much less you, because babies shouldn't suffer, no matter if their parents are contributing members of society or not. :)

Not only has it become a DEPENDENCY but an entitlement to these people who keep cranking out kids they can’t afford to take care of. Welfare has become their income revenue stream. We, who actually act responsibly, are supposed to somehow apologize for our success and line up to give more of our paycheck to people who have no intention of ever working.

This program is for low income pregnant women and their babies, until the age of five. I suggest that you take the help and make an extra effort to get out of debt or save some extra money or something. also, you can freeze cheese to be used later in lasagna and such. it gets crumbly but it's usable. So if you have freezer space, don't feel that you have to use all the cheese right away when you get it. Develop a backlog, rotate your stock so that when you no longer qualify for WIC, you have some cheese on hand.

I used WIC and when my son got older I paid for his lunches ...still nothing compared to corporate welfare with that too big to fail ideology...I've still paid way more taxes than I'll probably ever get in return from any government assistance...

This is one of the topics that Dave is wrong about. Absolutely is a moral decision. The money for government programs is taken from taxes, involuntarily. It is much different than someone giving you money in an act of Charity or even different than food banks which is food that is given voluntarily.

A couple freely giving money in a church as a charitable action is not nearly the same as a government-run program funded by taxpayer dollars. One is actual charity, the other is using a program funded by involuntary taxation. not the same at all.

Absolutely not. Buckle down and do it yourself. You won't have the government on your back and you'll feel better and stronger going forward by doing it yourself. Going on one government program is like a gateway drug.

I made 36,000 when my wife quit working to stay at home with our 1st baby. We decided we would be the ones to put food in our child's mouth before any other niceties for ourselves. We were able to do just that. Four children later and over double that salary, I look back on that time as a win as a father and provider for my family.

i think if people knew how easy it is to get WIC they'd get even more upset. My wife was told by the social worker at the hospital when we had our 2nd that she could get on WIC and i was like how, we make 55,000? Apparently they dont go back very far on your income check so if its a 2 income household and the woman takes off a week or 2 before delivery the income will look alot lower than what it really is which qualifies.

185% poverty level is the cutoff. It is one program that is intended for the lower middle class. It is very specific as to what is allowed for purchase. It is almost pointless unless you formula feed.

What good is an income that you had before the baby if you have the baby and no longer get that amount of money? That's one of the few things that makes sense about the program

If you work for and spend post-taxed money, by all means don't stress over WIC. You've already paid into it. You'll never spend more than you are going to contribute in a lifetime, meaning the government will still win. I may not pay taxes voluntarily, but maybe I would if I knew that more of it was going to be used for low-income families trying to move ahead in this brutal world than for political pet projects, earmarks, and kickbacks.

I would've asked what he's doing to increase his income. If he falls on a certain income bracket then the state should fund some kind of vocational course or take classes to get licensed in some trade while the gov. picks up the tab. So if you accept wic to help with food then you will not have to work as much overtime so you can take these classes. That's what I did. I was earning 20k, I got on food stamps, the state funded my cdl school courses that lasted about 6 months. I got my cdl class A. Then within two weeks I started a job earning 60k in my first year. No more food stamps, no more living check to check. Since then I've upgraded my license to work with hazmat and now I'm in a good union making 70k with full benefits and pension. You can do it if you refuse to tell yourself you're stuck. Breaking out of my comfort zone was the hardest but most important task in order to do this. What ever it takes.

Drew...please don't tap into WIC if you can possibly avoid it. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. Government assistance should only be used for those who absolutely can't make it on their own incomes and only on a temporary basis. Too many people get on welfare when they don't have to and then rely on it much longer than they should. It is good to hear you have plans to better your income. Good for you. Keep plugging away...you can do it.

If it's through the government it's not voluntary. Taxpayers are forced to find this. So yes, it's immoral to accept this. Charity, such as church donations are fine. People are volunteering to help. Whole different thing

I agree with your conclusion, but do not agree with the method of which you got there Dave, there is a major difference between charity within a church and welfare programs ran through government. Charity is voluntary, taxes are not.
