Then when I got hungry again, she would present the same plate and said i won't be getting anything else until I finished what was on the plate. So thanks to her patience, I don't have any food problems, I can eat practically anything put in front of me. My sister was more difficult, but my mother put it also into perspective for us. I'm taking a Poverty & Nutrition class at my uni and they made a very interesting point that we usually imagine a very skinny person when we think of people who are food insecure but in reality they can also be bigger set. We also tend to think they "don't miss a meal" but actually cheap/affordable food tends to be unhealthy and whatever they can afford (junk food) stores up. The correlations between obesity, poverty, & food insecurity really go hand in hand... it's much deeper than a "eat something healthy" especially in the demographic areas of low income communities.

@@stary3136 If they would just cut down the portion sizes to half, to normal sizes, they would cut their food budget in half. Look at the sheer _amount_ of food they buy. They buy a ton of cheap food, instead of just buying less food, and thinks they save money... Drinking water from the tap instead of buying soda or juice saves you some money. Baking your own bread, with rye instead of sugar and wheat. If you live in a rural area, and not in an apartment, there is probably some plot of land by your house where you can grow some veggies. Cutting out thing that aren´t really food, like chips, candy, cake, chocolate, ice cream etc also saves you a lot of money. Taking the bike or walk instead of taking the car everywhere, would save a lot of money spent on gas. I think the "healthy food is expensive" is a convenient excuse a lot of people use to eat a triple amount of cheap foods instead.

I think the issue here as well is how we are defining healthy eating. Healthy eating starts with portion control, and choosing foods you like that give that feeling of fulness while staying within healthy portions with what you like to eat based on your daily activity. Suggesting people eat low fat foods or "eat healthy foods" gives the idea that they have to abandon the foods they like for foods they may not like...which isn't necessarily true
@zhong138
@zhong138 2 жыл бұрын
Healthy eating begins by cutting out sugar. Specifically fructose from your diet. Take it on a very very limited scale or completely cut it out. A lot of the low fat food is crammed with sugar to make it taste better.But diet is also affected by social conditions almost all processed food contain fructose and if a family is unable to afford fresh food its going to be hard as well.
@pearldiver6949
@pearldiver6949 2 жыл бұрын
@@zhong138 nowadays it’s low sugar, a couple of years ago it was low fat (which is why companies now use a lot of sugar lol). Ofc for nutritional value you should balance your diet, but to begin with, managing your caloric intake is the most important first step to losing weight. 1000 cal of low sugar is still 1000 cal.
@zhong138
@zhong138 2 жыл бұрын
@@pearldiver6949 but calories are always not equivalent though. Countless studies have proven relying solely on calorie counting has been proven to be a stupid way to plan your diet .its helpful but calorie intake is not the only factor that determines the quality of your diet.( ask any actual medical professional they'll tell you the same.) So while any excess carbohydrates will make you obese there are certain reasons why fructose is very dangerous. I would suggest you watch dr lestigs video "sugar the bitter truth" on youtube. He does oversimplify the processes a lot but i think he does a fine job of explaining why fructose is more dangerous than any other carbohydrate we consume and how calories are always not equivalent.
@ayedrey
@ayedrey 2 жыл бұрын
@@zhong138 not true. Research shows calories in calories out. Of course it's not the only factor, but in regards to diet it's paramount
@zhong138
@zhong138 2 жыл бұрын
@@ayedrey again what i'm saying is that all calories are not equivalent. If all we had to do for a healthy diet was count calories them fruits ,vegetables or fructose syrup shouldn't have any difference in how it affects our health as long as you maintain calorie intake amount. but i'm pretty sure you don't need me to tell you that's not the case. I'm not saying calorie intake and excercise doesn't matter. But calorie counting is in no way paramount and my reply was in regards to what a healthy diet means. The truth of the matter is that our body processes different substances differently even if they are of the same calorie content and have drastically different effects on health and metabolism. Even sugars of equal calorie have different effects and benefits. In summary human body cannot be simply explained using basic physics it needs a bit of biochemistry too.

I live by the 80/20 Rule: The rule works on the theory that 80% of consequences come from 20% of causes. So 80% of your weight is determined by WHAT YOU EAT and 20% is attributable to the EXERCISE. I load up on 4 oz salmon, chicken, and beef only once in a blue moon; and TONS OF VEGGIES, berries & other fruits. Walking 3 times a day is also part of my routine. I have to live by the 80/20 rule because I’m 50 years old and only 4’ 11” …in order to maintain my weight at 105 lbs. I pray these children were able to lose the weight and live healthier lives. 🙏🏽

I'll never forget when I wore yoga pants and leggings for about 4 years because I had given up trying to find a pair of jeans that fit me right. I was a size 12 before the pandemic. Now I'm a 16. It's the biggest I've ever been and the most depressed I've ever been. I think a lot of my depression comes from having a very low self esteem. Because even when I had only gained 10-15lbs back in college, I became a recluse. I didn't want to be seen. And it's just spiralled from there. But I wanna get back to some kind of normal.

3 years ago I gained 20 lbs in 2 months due to my thyroid. I was unaware I had developed a thyroid problem. I paid for a trainer at the gym for over a year and didn't lose significant weight. I then tried intermittent fasting in Jan 2020 and I lost 30 lbs. in 8 months. Try it. It's hard the first 2 weeks but then your body gets used to it.

@@TelmaFrege I don't think my doc is fully convinced about fasting, but she is aware of it. Her big thing she told me was not to overeat when i do fast. Unfortionaly, the 16, 18, 20, 24 hrs just kept me in a small narrow range, so I thought, I still have high amount of insulin to prevent anything, I need to fast more. Im currently doing a two day fast and in one day already Im down 3 pounds!! The funny thing is, my doc says losing 5 poinds in 3 months is good!! I thought, I can lose that in 3 days!! As for exercise, the doc did say that it wasnt good for losing weight, but it is good for muscle. I liked to do sprints on the track, not real big on long distrance, not sure why. As for "my plate", I only eat one a day, mostly protine, 3 eggs, sausage or baccon, small bit of hash brown and toast, and the doc says to cut my eggs, to one or two, because its protin, and cut back on meats too cause it has . . . wait for it . . . FAT in it/higjly processed . . . but mainly it has fat in it!! Suprisongly she said NOTHING about the hashbrown and toast with butter and jam, which i usually eat last anyway. I only drink water. I should measure to see what Im drinking. I think doc says 60oz a day. What half your waight in oz a day. I heard that a few years back. Oh this is funny: the doc says this cute little saying, and i love it!! Its something like: Whats on the plate determains the weight!! So my thinking was: Well if theres nothing on "my plate" I CANNOT gain weight . . . its PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIABLE!! Its sad that the healthcare people dont know about fasting, or if they do, they dont tell us about. As for the government, they screwed up big time on this one!!

In my country, industrialised and junk food was extremely expensive when I was a kid, so my parents couldn’t only afford veggies, fruit and some meat at times. My parents never bought us soft drinks or boxed juice, and we just got the cheapest biscuits at the local supermarket. When asked my dad to get us some Oreo -like biscuits, he would tell us he’d rather not purchase such a thing because he didn’t trust the creamy part that was the filling of the bickie. Having been raised in a third world country had a couple of advantages… My mum had me go to the supermarket by bike to buy veggies practically every day and that’s when I learned how to identify vegetables because whenever I bought something wrong, my mum would make me go back and buy the right one she had asked for.

Haven’t watched it all, but I really feel bad for Jaylen’s mom. When my mom was a new mom and just gave birth to my older brother, she thought that everytime her baby cried, it was because he needed his diaper changed or that he was hungry. Of course, this meant my brother became a huge toddler (60 lbs at 2 years old). It wasn’t until she moved to the USA that she realized what she was doing and was able to reverse this. Still, he struggles so much more when it comes to controlling his hunger and suppressing his appetite in comparison to me (someone who has never been overweight). My mom felt even more guilt about how she raised my brother once I was born. I never had a problem with weight control because when I was upset and not hungry, that I would literally throw the food or drinks given to me. It took her a while to understand that sometimes babies just want to be held by their mom, and always blamed herself for not learning sooner so my brother didn’t have such a hard time with his weight / health.
