How self-obsessed and race-obsessed do you have to be to think this is about you? It's about common sense and historical accuracy. It doesn't make a lick of sense for there to be black people OR (caucasian) white people in Japan. It's feudal Japan. The country literally was in isolation for centuries until Commodore Matthew Perry opened up trade relations. It just breaks immersion and is such obvious DEI to throw in a black character where it makes no sense. If you think this is the first time a black protagonist has been in AC you must have never played this series before. It respects history and culture from all over the globe. Newsflash, not every culture and history is about black people.

Companies have wrote Inclusion Policies for everyone to read, at least Prime has, so you can go count those boxes yourself. In this case I doubt they picked Yasuke because they thought his story was interesting, they picked him and the woman because they check two high-value boxes. Rumor is they made them both gay, and that means even more valuable boxes will be checked. More boxes filled, better the ESG score. Better the ESG score, cheaper loans from entities like Blackrock investment group, who are openly talking about forcing this check-box mentality to companies, who then force this virtuous ideology to their customers. The problem is that they’re breaking series conventions just to have a black MC. Altair was half Muslim and Christian in the Crusages. Ezio was an Italian Medici during the Papal peak of power. Connor was half native and half European in Colonial Revolutionary war. Kenway was a European Pirate in an era setting dominated by European pirates. And when we got a setting where we freed slaves we played as African Adele who IMO was better than Kenway. Etc etc. All of them were made up fictional characters. No one batted an eye when Bayek, an Egyptian, was the main for AC Origins. And let’s be real if a Sub Saharan AC game released would people complain if the MC was some known historic white guy? Yes. It would be just as dumb. Or if Connor was Chinese in AC3? Yeah… that’s stupid. But Yasuke is fine because he can play the race card which is lazy. FYI Chinese soldiers served in the American Revolutionary War so we have more info on them than Yasuke. And EVEN THEN it would still be stupid. Seriously ask yourself what your kneejerk reaction would be if ACIII was announced all those years ago and it was a Chinese guy. FYI I’m Asian and even I think it would have been dumb AF.

Altair, Ezio, Connor, Kenway, Shaye, the Frye Twins etc etc. are based on no real historic figures. Yasuke is. Be honest, if the Revolutionary War starred a Chinese guy you’d think it was dumb. We all would. But if it’s black then suddenly it’s ok. AC ALWAYS followed these conventions for their main character. It’s not racist guy to just want the normal expected thing. I also complained when Ezio was the main character in Constantinople and I disliked how they did that for Ezio but didn’t allow Connor to go to Paris for Unity. So your racism attacks don’t work on me when I have actual consistent logic whereas you just keep playing the race card with no actual counterpoint.

I didn’t ignore them, they’re just don’t apply to me. You believe the only reason anyone can dislike Yasuke in AC must be racism. I’m offering you a valid viewpoint you missed and your kneejerk reaction was to call me a racist. Here’s a real life example. Ubisoft has a game called For Honor where Vikings, Knights and Samurai fight each other. When a Roman fighter, Gladiator, was announced for the Knight faction, I complained. Why? Because Romans are not Knights. Instead I said they should have had an Aksumite Epire warrior since the gladiator’s trident and shield could be an Aksum light infantry spearman. Aksum was a medieval Ethiopian Empire of African Warriors that was Christian and helped in the Crusades. So was I racist against White people when I said Rome didn’t fit the Knights but the African Aksumite Warrior would? But now that I do the same for Japan I’m racist the other way.

I'm Japanese, so I use the translation function. This game is really influential, and facts are altered and plagiarized. Japanese people are angry and complaining because the main character is black. This is racism in Japan! Or white people pretend to be Japanese and post racist comments. I learned that there are such opinions and articles from overseas. And that there are people who mistake it for fact. I understand that it's too late to stop selling it now. There may be people who want to buy it at this stage. The original good thing about games is that people who want to enjoy them can enjoy them. There are many Japanese people who don't mind if the main character is black. I wish they could just enjoy it. But there were too many problems that I couldn't forgive. There are many plagiarized images on the screen. People from old photographs of historical Japanese people are appearing as non-player characters without permission. The screen shows all four seasons at the same time, cherry blossoms blooming in early spring, out-of-season rice planting, plants that only exist in autumn, and when I found it, I thought it was a comedy game and laughed. In Japan, a torii gate is a barrier that separates the sacred world of a shrine from the secular world where humans live, and indicates the entrance to the sacred world. It is definitely not a village gate. Moreover, in an advertisement for the game aimed at Japanese people, the subtitles displayed on the screen were in Chinese, not Japanese. It was also strange that the catchphrase of the advertisement was written in another language. Some people felt that they were being mocked. If this game is based on historical facts and the real Japan, it is unacceptable that the content is full of misunderstandings and prejudices, the creators have no intention of learning about Japan, and the distributors have a bad attitude towards the game. Also, I just don't want the game company to treat the content of this game as if it were real information, intentionally spreading misunderstandings and prejudices against Japanese people all over the world. But in reality, Japanese people are just pointing out mistakes and facts, and for some reason they are called racists. They keep being called that. They just pointed out plagiarism. They just checked the history. They just pointed out something strange on the screen. For many Japanese people, the fact that Yasuke is a black protagonist is no longer relevant. Our voices as Japanese people are being ignored so much that some people are starting to mistake us for racists. This is because the game company is directing the world in this way by answering articles and interviews. Also, Yasuke certainly existed in Japan for a short period of time before Oda Nobunaga died. I couldn't find any records of him as a samurai, but he was definitely one of his subordinates. There are few documents about him, and he wasn't well known in Japan until recently. But it's an undeniable fact that he was with Oda Nobunaga, who is famous in Japanese history. When I first found out about Yasuke by chance, I thought it was a romantic story of history. If the game company had at least said from the beginning that it was a Japanese-style parody fantasy game, I don't think Japanese people would have been so angry. I don't really care if Japanese people are killed on screen or not. It's just that people who enjoy it can enjoy it. It's fiction after all. But the game company is intentionally stirring up Japanese anger. If this game is based on historical facts and the real Japan, it is full of misunderstandings and prejudices, the creators have no intention of learning about Japan, and I don't want the game company to treat the content of this game as if it were real information and intentionally spread misunderstandings and prejudices against Japanese people all over the world. Just by pointing out mistakes and facts, some people are starting to seriously misunderstand Japanese people as racists. Japanese people want to preserve the facts and history left by their ancestors as accurately as possible. And above all, they absolutely do not want to be treated as a race that has discriminatory opinions. And yet, I read in an interview that the production team made statements that made it seem as if Japanese people were racist. The production and sales teams said that this is a historical fact, and that Japanese people who complain are racist. The production and sales teams repeatedly made statements that could be interpreted as discriminatory against Japanese and Asian people, revealing the dishonesty of the creators one after another. Even these are only a small part of the problem. There are even tweets from the official website that hint at punishment for Japanese people. But if we Japanese don't speak up now, discriminatory behavior that denies humanity just because of skin color is truly incomprehensible from a Japanese moral perspective. I hate being treated as a racist who does such incomprehensible behavior the most. I also find it very unpleasant that Yasuke's name is used just to cover up the terrible treatment of the game as a whole. I feel like it's denigrating the people who lived through that era. It's just a game. But the attitude of the game company distorts the identity of Japanese people. So at the very least, please do not believe that Japanese people are a racist group. Please, that's all I ask. I apologize if there are any typos.

Yasuke was indeed a fascinating figure, but his life and story have been severely misunderstood and misrepresented. Yasuke was brought to Japan by Portuguese traders as a slave, not a voluntary traveler seeking adventure or glory. His life in Japan was marked by his service to Oda Nobunaga, who was intrigued by Yasuke’s unique appearance and strength. However, the claim that Yasuke was a samurai in the traditional sense is historically inaccurate and misleading. By portraying Yasuke as a black samurai without proper historical context or research, Ubisoft is contributing to the ongoing misrepresentation of non-European cultures in the media. This simplification and romanticization of a complex historical period are not only intellectually lazy but also culturally insensitive. It is an affront to those who value historical accuracy and the respectful depiction of cultural heritage. Furthermore, the response from Ubisoft regarding the criticism - claiming that the backlash is due to racism or that Japanese people do not care - is not only dismissive but deeply offensive. This response shows a complete lack of understanding and respect for the voices of the Japanese community. Ignoring the concerns of the very people whose history and culture you are depicting is arrogant and unacceptable. The petition calling for the cancellation of the game has garnered significant support, with over 50,000 signatures. This is not a movement driven by ignorance or racism, but by a genuine desire to see Japanese history portrayed with the dignity and respect it deserves. Your dismissal of this petition as the work of "white people" further alienates your audience and demonstrates a shocking level of ignorance.

Yasuke is a character who appears only briefly in Nobunaga's story. He appears as a slave in the Catholic Church. Nobunaga had never seen a black person before, so he assumed Yasuke's skin was dyed and had him wash it. He was surprised that the color did not come off, and was amused, so he made Yasuke his servant. He was just like an English footman. A year and a half after hiring Yasuke, Nobunaga was killed in a rebellion by his subordinate, Akechi Mitsuhide. Yasuke was also captured by Mitsuhide, but because he was a servant, his life was spared and he returned to the Catholic Church. His whereabouts after that are unknown. That is all that remains in the records. In other words, Yasuke only served Nobunaga for a year and a half. To begin with, Yasuke was a servant and not a soldier, so he did not receive combat training and had no opportunity to participate in wars and accomplish great feats. By the time Yasuke served Nobunaga, Nobunaga had already become a great power. What Nobunaga needed was not an inexperienced soldier, but a living ornament to demonstrate his power, and a footman with a distinctive appearance was the perfect fit. The key point is that the historical Yasuke had almost no fighting ability, no samurai family name, and no samurai education. And the Japanese men of that time, even if they were not samurai, participated in battles on a daily basis as foot soldiers. There was no way Yasuke was a warrior. That's why it's ridiculous for the CEO of UBIsoft to claim that this game is based on historical fact. The Japanese feel respect and admiration for the existence of samurai. That's why they feel indignant that Yasuke, who is an insignificant person in historical fact, is treated as a samurai. For the Japanese, Yasuke was a blank slate until now. We have sympathized with his turbulent life. From now on, he will be an object of loathing. This game was the trigger.

I am not claiming that he was Nobunaga's slave. He was a slave of the Catholic Church. He was presented to Nobunaga and freed from slavery when Nobunaga made him his servant. It is recorded that Yasuke was treated naked and as a spectacle before being presented to Nobunaga. This treatment shows that the Catholic Church treated Yasuke as a slave. Yasuke was captured 15 months later in Akechi Mitsuhide's rebellion, but many of Nobunaga's samurai and servants (Yasuke's colleagues) died in the battle. Yasuke, however, survived. Akechi did not take his life, and returned it to the Catholic Church with the disdainful words, "Such an animal is not worth killing." This may be a sign of Akechi Mitsuhide's mercy, but it shows that Yasuke did little in the battle. If he had caused damage to Akechi's soldiers, Akechi would not have been able to save him. If Yasuke had the fighting ability and the will to fight, he would have died in the battle with Akechi, and even if he had survived, he would have been killed. Even if Nobunaga had given Yasuke his freedom, he would not have been obligated to die after only 15 months of association, but it is wrong to treat him as a samurai.

Even in a world with magic apples, if Altair starts climbing the walls, the townspeople will say, "He's crazy." Yasuke Samurai's actions in this game are so crazy that real Japanese people say, "He's crazy." What if you slurping coffee at afternoon tea in the Harry Potter world? the audience says"He's crazy." Magic is no excuse.

As a black person I don't think we look like monkeys , I think some people have a certain look and some DO NOT but that applies to all colors and ethnicities . This obviously meant to be racist joke made me chuckle for a bit the monkey in the samurai gear bruh kinda funny. PLanet of the Apes but japan that would be awesome and fun to watch. As far as historical accuracy goes the crossbows earliest recorded history was in 400bce china and Assassin Creed 1 is set in 1191 so Altair could have had it . Some believe the reason he does not have it is because he throws it away after using it in the trailer or The weapon made the missions too easy so the devs took it out. Definitely was not due to historical bullshit.

I would push it back onto you and say you're the racist here for wanting your race to be the main character of a game that takes place in another country in another time period. You're being racist towards Japanese people. Congrats. You agree with a racist company. How do we know they're racist? Because their gameplay shows Yasuke riding a horse through a Torii gate which in Japanese culture is then followed by a Shinto Shrine. That is the entire point of a Torii gate. But in Shadows, they just have one that leads to an open village because clearly they just thought it looked cool, but not actually respecting the culture. How are we meant to respect your culture when you don't respect others?

Assassins Creed is a fictional series not a documentary. There’s been many other historical characters in assassins creed that weren’t historically accurate. But they weren’t black so no one cared. Assassins Creed Odyssey’s cannoical character was a woman and women weren’t aloud to even be Spartans. It’s even depicted in the game except it didn’t apply to her but no one cared because she wasn’t black. Yasuke isn’t even the main character he doesn’t even have a hidden blade and I’m personally upset about that. Naoe is the assassin character in the assassins creed game but gets no recognition because she’s not black.

On May 15, 2021, I watched "Black Samurai: Yasuke, an African Samurai Who Served Nobunaga" on NHK BSP's history program. In that show, Yasuke participated in Nobunaga's conquest of Koshu (the battle in which Nobunaga destroyed the Takeda family) and the Tensho-Iga Rebellion (the battle against the Iga ninjas). Furthermore, at the time of the transformation of Honnoji, it seems that only Yasuke hid Nobunaga's head and buried it without the Akechi army knowing. Yasuke also acquired Nobunaga's death mask (some temple keeps it) If the Akechi army had discovered Nobunaga's corpse, the history of Japan might have changedYasuke left Japan with great success.

The documentary program is closed to the public in Japan. The production was directed by Thomas Lockley. He is an English teacher and novelist, not a historian. The program was created in response to the success of the novel Africa Samurai, but there is almost no historical data on Yasuke, and the program was based on the novel. A professor from the University of Tokyo participated in the historical supervision, but he recorded in his blog at the time that "there were many incorrect expressions in the historical view, so I asked the program to correct them, but it was refused due to someone's wish. This was not a problem in Japan because the program was a pay TV broadcast and had few viewers. Also, as mentioned at the beginning of this article, the video is private in Japan. Why is this? I am astonished that novels are now becoming historical facts in all media in Japan without our knowledge. It is especially blatant in Western Europe. Investigations are underway in Japan to compile a time-stamped summary of the dissemination of misinformation outside of the ACS. Unfortunately, because the information is in Japanese, it is not as diffuse as it could be. ACS is just the tip of the iceberg, and we are not talking about short-sighted conclusions because a black man is the main character. Rather, we are considering the possibility that there are people who want to take advantage of Yasuke, who is black. For the Japanese, it is about altering history, and for blacks, it is about manipulating emotions and using Yasuke for financial exploitation. It is double racism.

As a Japanese person, I'm asking you to please play this game as a work of fiction. Don't think you understand Japanese culture because of it. Seriously, the historical accuracy and everything else are completely messed up. Why were Nioh and The Last Samurai accepted by the Japanese? Because Nioh is complete fantasy; no one would complain even if the protagonist were an alien. The Last Samurai is quite a realistic story. Tom Cruise serves as 'our eyes' in the film, and it's not strange for a foreigner to be present during that era. The Japanese characters in the movie are authentically Japanese, and the samurai are true to their nature. A white man influenced by outdated Japanese samurai traditions, who is eventually accepted and becomes a samurai, isn't really a problem, is it? Why do we hate Assassin's Creed's Yasuke so much? Yasuke came to Japan as a slave, and Nobunaga, who saw a black man for the first time, took him in and kept him for a year and a half. After that, he disappears from history. That's it. We have nothing against the black Yasuke; he was even mentioned in our textbooks as a curiosity, but it ended with a 'Oh, that's interesting. But some joker spun a story called 'The true story of the legendary African Samurai, turning it into something like an isekai fantasy, and made Yasuke out to be a historical hero. Then came the long-awaited Assassin's Creed set in Japan, the dream collaboration of ninjas and assassins. We finally get to play as a ninja assassin! But then, the protagonist is Yasuke, a historical figure only unknown to the Japanese. Swinging a club, he crushes and kills Japanese people like insects, and is hailed as a hero. Why, when the protagonist has always been a local before? They were looking for 'our samurai,' someone who could be our eyes, meaning not Japanese. Okay, Europeans, Chinese, Egyptians, and Native Americans are all part of the world, but Japanese people are incomprehensible aliens from another realm.

@@NerdStorm92 You consider that having a native japanese male protagonist is uninteresting enough to gather western audience so its better to put a black foreigner person so the Afroamerican community can have their own "Gaijin" experience where the foreigner has to FREE the japanese island. But I will be real, them making him gay I’m not cool and they could have just went ahead and used another protagonist and let yasuke had his own separate story like they do most of the dlc. I also think it’s kind of pandering as well because they absolutely did not need to include that hip hop music in his fights scene either when the dudes African. Miles don’t count because he’s clearly into music, in the modern times, in New York so that was perfect for him, but not here.
