Hi, I have a 2005 Nissan Sentra and have code P0420. I am in California and if I install this, will I pass California smog test? Do I have to install the spacer on both the exhaust manifold O2 sensor and the catalytic converter O2 sensor or just the catalytic converter one? Finally, does each sensor use both spacers or just one each? I've seen some videos where people use both and some where people only use one so I want to make sure. Thank you!!

hey Nathan I cleaned out the idle air control valve with the gum out carb/choke cleaner the past Sunday is still idling like crazy when I put it park on cold start after 15 min warm up or a cruise then set it in park. the needle idles to about 4 thousand rpm I believe.

I notice a tiny crack on my air mass sensor boot and I am also running an aftermarket cold air intake filter with aluminum pipe.

CoolinKofi I would start with a new boot, then look into all the vacuum leak possibilities, including the ccv and spray around the intake manifold gasket to see if thats a possible leak, disa o-ring and all that stuff

has anyone tried the lacquer thinner method in the gas? I still haven't put my plug foulers on because one side of my 740il the heat shield needs to be hammered for it to fit, but I saw this fix and the lacquer thinner method on KZbin as well. I have both p0420 & p0430. I can smell gas/fumes when at a drive thru window. It's not the rotten egg smell though.

Great video!! Now I have this problem on my E90 320i petrol since like 10 months. I went to the BMW dealer, they told me that the Catalytic Converter must be changed, a 3.000 euro job. The car has only 125.000 km on the clock so I said no way, because the car is still driving fine so I don't see the point. Can anything else get worst, besides this faulty code? Thank you!

If you experience power loss it could be getting stopped up but thats extremely unlikely, adding fuel injector cleaner to the gas sometimes help, most of them have enzymes that clean the converter

No power loss at all. In the mornings when I first start it up, then put in in the 1st gear release the clutch and not push the gas at over 1800 rpm the car will shake. Just at taking off. And this is only for the first 10 min. Then it's gone. I asked here and there, but no one can tell me what's wrong. Actually I also wanted to give it a try with the fuel injector cleaner, but i really thought that won't help that much. Now, I will.

Kenny Springer Maybe a silly question, but did you clear the code? Also, there are certain engine codes that, even after you clear them, will only clear completely for inspections after you have put a certain amount of miles on the vehicle. Always put anywhere from 30 - 100 miles on a vehicle after clearing a code before you get an inspection.

hmmm I've a quick question... if you use this method to trick/fool the rear O2 sensor would this also prevent the engine management light coming on regarding any other issue.... as the sensors not in direct flow etc, hence possibly preventing uknow of a more serious matter with your car?? I've just replaced my cat, kinda guessing there's a leak at the downpipe gasket due to being very flimsy compared to the old oem... so once that's replaced (the gasket) I'm hoping no more engine management light as it never came on before.... however I'm thinking maybe due to the cat being aftermarket it's also possibly tripping the p0420 code.. as I've read else where this is possibly down to the sensitivity of the sensors etc.. any thoughts

+Nathan's DIY Garage Noticed this in the video too, but there is no high part to these codes at all, it's only below threshold efficiency. 430 is for bank 2, 420 for bank 1. At least on the Cadillac, part of this commonly happening is that the ECU has been programmed to be too sensitive from the factory and now if you can afford it, you can have GM re-flash your ECM to a lower threshold for these codes, they finally can just stay off without these kinds of tricks applied. On those it always was a false alarm until a cat actually would die and then of course here comes these code for it. The re-flash actually fixes a lot of other problems with errant codes on the EGR system too. You change it because it's bad but the ECM can't know that it's been changed so it runs the new EGR valve with the old divisor ratio which just keeps setting the same EGR code. Disconnect the battery and touch cables and now the computer will re-learn the limits of the EGR valve to settle on a new divisor and no more codes. The re-flash makes this all happen each time you turn on the key. Which is the way it always should have been to start with. Nice one, I know a Cadillac that might get a pair of these installed.

It will pass the computer test, but if the inspector is a hard ass and decides to do a visual inspection, they will see the spacer and fail you for cheating.

Hey Mark, I am wondering the same as I put one on post bank 2 and now i just get p1093 every 500 miles. Honestly, the anti fouler will rust a bit and will not be very noticeable unless it is a OCD inspector. Take it in on a Friday at the end of the day when everyone is more worried about what vice they will do that weekend. I agree with Bernd Buskus I cannot afford these kinds of cars anymore so I will not sell it to anyone and eventually turn it back into a BMW dealership.

I have a 2005 BMW e53 and the post cat o2 sensors are huge. I bought the biggest spark plug adapters I could find. I had to drill them out to fit in the sensor head. Still got the P0430 code. I even stacked two spark converts with the 02 sensor, but I still get the code. Any suggestions?

To rectify the problem I replaced new Catalytic Converter OEM and all 4 sensors but no luck than I changed the Bank 1 sensors with Bosch genuine still no luck. Wouldn't a plugged cat end up affecting your engine regardless of O2 sensor readings? Since it would create so much more back pressure the more its plugged

+Grimfate20 Well in this case they are not plugged, they read slightly lower flow if the car was burning anything prior to getting fixed, alot of the time just putting some miles on the car is enough to clear the converters, a few cases the light will come on after a few days or even weeks of driving, this will insure that will not happen, especially if you need the car to pass inspection, also like i stated if you are running open exhaust or a higher flow exhaust this will be useful.

+Grimfate20 The code isn't for a plugged cat, it's for a cat that appears to not be responding to ECUs rich / lean cycling. That cycling is really a test to see if the cat is still working. This device alters the exposure, temperature and timing of these passing gasses to the post O2 sensor. For any one of the three reasons above, now the ECU sees that the cat does respond well enough to keep the money light off. I don't know which one it is, but for $5 I don't really care, I'll give it a try. A plugged cat will cause this code, but that's not what the code is about. Google 'false 430 code' to see the scope of the issue.
