I think the confusion is HDD/SSD. Most newer/younger IT people have probably primarily only dealt with the newer SSD technology, so they gravitate towards "never defrag". Well, with SSD, that's 100% correct. But not every pc out there has SSD. In my daily business, it's about a 50/50 mix, even still. Plus, IT people think they know everything quite often LOL

Defragmenting a heavily fragmented HDD (and almost full) can be helped by first cut and paste the largest files to another drive, then defragment the HDD, and afterwards cut and paste the largest files back into the HDD.

Also, if you copy the file back to original fragmented drive wouldn't it already be "defragmented" that file only I mean. I like this discussion lol
@AskYourComputerGuy2 ай бұрын
@xdsmastermia nope. Fragmentation occurs as a file is written to the drive. Theoretically though, if the drive is not defragmented after moving the file, then when written back, Windows will likely just write the majority of it back into the large "gaps" it was removed from. If the drive is defragged after moving it, Windows now has large spaces to fill, but likely closer together (versus scattered all over the drive). Hope this makes sense 👍

I always tell my elderly clients that a fragmented computer is like using reference books in a library and after using them, putting them back on the trolley... not the shelf. It takes longer to find the info in the jumble of books when you need it again and you can't remember which book it was in.

When a hard drive is empty, it will have the fastest performance. As it fills up, it will slow down for writes (and reads, depending on which files you are reading). That is because when a hard drive is empty, it writes to the outer most portion of the platter's within. And since there is more real-estate, per rotation, on the outer section of the platters, more data will be written and read per rotation. An empty (or nearly empty) hard drive might read and write data at 260 MB/s. Sometime later, if you have only a couple of gigabytes of free space, and you save an 800 MB file, it will probably write at 150 MB/s, or close to that. That is a big performance hit. Nothing is wrong. It simply takes more rotations of the platters to store data at the inner portions of the platters. A long time ago, I searched for a program that would let you specify which files to put at the front (outer edges of the platters). I never found such a program (but I lost interest and haven't looked recently -- there must be a utility that does that). Defragging does not optimize for the above. It simply makes your files contiguous. Defragging relocates parts of files so that each file has no gaps between the bytes that make up the file. I am not sure why our host recommended a 3rd party defragging tool? Windows has a built in defragger, and will accomplish the same thing as 3rd party tools (as far as its core function is concerned). The tool that our host recommended has paid options. I suspect that he will receive a commission for folks that choose a paid option. Nothing wrong with that. But if you want to use a free version, I suggest that you use the defragger that is built in to Windows. The more 3rd party software that you install, the slower your computer will run, as more registry entries are made, and more services are started, etc. Also, with 3rd party software, it might do more than the reason you installed it. It might phone home. Or, it might not. No way to know (unless it is open source). Why roll the dice, when Windows has a defragger?
@AskYourComputerGuy2 ай бұрын
All correct, except...I don't get anything from recommending Defraggler. Not a penny. Secondly, Windows defrag does work. I trust and prefer the more graphical interface of Defraggler. Sincerely..."The Host"

Thank you for the video. However, I am very confused and concerned about SSD NVMe drives. I've just built a brand new desktop for gaming purposes mostly, and when I have put both of my NVMe drives onto the motherboard everything worked fine booted up and checked using defraggler software. I have used the software for years as well with great success. Here is my question. Both of my NVMe drives when I initially scan them showed over 50% fragmentation and they were brand new drives. In that case, I did defragment both of them got them down to under 10% and everything was fine. I would like an explanation or an alternative for what I should do for NVMe SSDs when brand new ones come with 50% fragmentation. I do understand the read and write limits of SSDs when you hit that limit, they just die. This is a well-known fact. However I have not had any problems defragmenting my SSDs. If you could please elaborate on this more as now I am concerned plus I just really want to know more about this. Thank you very much!
@AskYourComputerGuy2 ай бұрын
Great question! Long story short, windows uses a process called trim to automatically optimize SSD/NVME drives through a process called TRIM. it is complicated, but I always equate it to memory optimization versus physical drive optimization. If one was so inclined, they could Google TRIM and learn about how it works. But I will always stand behind never defragmenting an SSD or NVME drive. You won’t likely see any immediate damage by defragmenting an SSD, and these drives are getting better at lasting longer, even if defragmented, but you will see a shortened lifespan
@JonDisnard2 ай бұрын
If one has an actual hard drive, as in spinning disks, and the filesystem is running fat32... Then perhaps, maybe, in theory... Fragmentation might be an issue. Otherwise it's probably not an issue. That's because modern SSDs are nonlinear, and fragmentation is an intrinsic effect of the underlying storage, and that's okay. By design modern SSDs are fast because they are nonlinear, they fetch data quickly because they don't fetch in straight lines. That said, one can defrag a modern filesystem on a modern SSD, and it might be slightly more optimal. On an SSD one wants to run the TRIM command.

If your primary drive is an HDD (not SSD), it can absolutely (and likely will) help!
@johnhpalmer60982 ай бұрын
Should help with that, and more. Remember, this is ONLY for mechanical hard drives. SSD's, it's not recommended you defrag as it'll reduce the write life of the drive, however, keep in mind that most modern (read, in the last couple of years or so), most SSD's have very high amounts of write times, and can last years reading and writing to and fro. Early SSD's were quite limited with write speeds and would wear out fairly quickly so keep heavy writing tasks to older mechanical drives, and even now, most SSD's there is no real need to defrag them anyway as they are much faster than mechanical drives ever hope to be. Mechanical drives are best for longer term storage and for audio/video/game storage, not for programs and OS tasks. Use SSD's there for certain.

With Windows, NTFS will try to write files using the fewest areas of free space. This becomes more difficult when the drive is nearly full or the free space is fragmented. Files that grow over time can become fragmented if there is no free space immediately after them. File downloads, video encoding and Windows log files can be prone to fragmentation.

Great question, one that I get asked often. Windows built-in utility claims to "work great", and I won't argue that it does work. But I've also repaired hundreds of computers, running Windows with "optimization" enabled, that were 20/30/60% fragmented. In my opinion, that doesn't pass the sniff test. Defragler 100% works, also provides a visual representation of fragmentation (for those of us who are visual creatures), additionally it allows for scheduling, allowing a user to control the optimization themselves. If you're happy with how Windows is handing your drives, then no, you don't need this. But I have fixed countless "slow pc" issues just by running this software. And because my job is to provide trusted advice to novices, it also is a way to help people understand which software is safe and trusted, as I have used it for years with zero issues 👍

I put Win 95 and Linux Mint on it. He started out mostly Mint because we could not find the software he needed at the time. Eventually we got most of it. One thing was the printer, which worked on Mint very easily. Meanwhile, I fixed up a shared file area for the two. Linux enforces good file management. Windows does not, esp Win 97.

OK Scott. I'm very confused. I have had Defraggler on my PC for years. Going by your instructions. I find I have 2 SSD drives listed on Defraggler. BUT: I know for a fact that when I bought this, it was an SSD and a HHD. I checked Speccy and that shows 2 SSD drives. How can that happen? Change? May I email you personally?

Yes you may. What I would do is go to device manager. Under drives and storage, you'll often see the model of the drive(s). Google the model number and then you'll see exactly what's under the hood 👍

Lie an ssd does not need defrag

You obviously didn't watch the video. I say this multiple times.

Not if you have an older computer with mechanical hard drives...probably more relevant than ever, considering years of being written to and from. All about the individual user 👍
@artifactingreality2 ай бұрын
@@AskYourComputerGuy possibly maybe but I really wouldn't worry about it.

@artifactingreality well, my clients pay me to make their computers as fast as possible. For those with HDDs, this is an important first step 👍

@@AskYourComputerGuy Doesn't Windows do it on a weekly schedule anyway?
@AskYourComputerGuy2 ай бұрын
Yes...but if it isn't doing a good job, what's the point of how often it runs?

Is the following statement correct: "Windows doesn't defragment SSDs - even if you tell it to do that, it simply optimizes the SSD's trim operations." That's the response I got when I asked at some point.
@AskYourComputerGuy2 ай бұрын
I'm not an expert on how TRIM works in relation to what Windows does or doesn't do. I personally don't think manually defragmenting an SSD makes any difference to Windows. You'll notice an SSD defrag take about 10 seconds, so I'm guessing there is no correlation. Interesting question for sure 👍

For SSDs, Windows has a trim command to optimize SSDs
@AskYourComputerGuy2 ай бұрын
As mentioned in the video...that is correct :)

I only came here to mention that this doesn't happen on Linux and that windows is a POS.
