These are only to tell if it's plastic and some are damaging to the stone. Heat destroys the color and glass is also very hard and can grind away the very fine tips. The way I've been recommended to heat test stones is to heat up a wire and touch them discreetly. fake amethyst I've seen is dyed quartz or low grade amethyst which you can soak in water to tell the difference.

Don't do any of these steps, why would you burn your amethyst? Amethyst can lose their colour if heated so they will no longer be amethyst but just simple quartz. And why would you scratch your drinking glass with a amethyst quartz? That drinking glass has the same market value as the amethyst.

glass is not that hard. Its level is between 5-6 on mohs scale (10 is diamond, 9 is corundum, 8 topaz, et.). Amethyst is roughly level 7. The higher mohs level of a mineral can scratch those below, but not above it. thats why glass is scratched by Amethyst crystals.

Amethyst is extremely inexpensive so there isnt really a market for "fake" amethyst and it doesnt really exist. Good shorthand tips, but for people that are actually in this field mapping clevage/structure and scratch test is what we would use as diagnostic criteria if you dont have the correct devices or materials to give definitive answers I'd focus more on properly identifying and recognizing crystal structure.

For a geologist, it's very easy to understand real & fake crystals by observing any rock. Also, there are a lot of lab grown crystals, I've come in encounter which are been sold as genuine crystals. People even now think & argue that those crystals are genuine. Although, thank you for providing with your valuable comment :)
@d.barrett578

@IndianCrystals Right. There are lab grown version of highly valuable stones. Corrundum (ruby & sapphire), diamonds, emerald. But quartz minerals are not worth enough to make lab grown alternatives. That is what I'm trying to clarify that you don't seem to understand. Also I work in the gem industry and I am a GIA Graduate Gemologist Student currently.

@@d.barrett578you literally just told on yourself without even realizing. You work in an industry for “gems” + they don’t consider quartz crystals expensive enough to replicate = their focus is/may not be on spiritually related or promoted crystals.

I was on a trip with a friend who has a degree in aqueous geology (hadn’t worked in the field in over a decade though) and on the beach I found a piece of what I thought was oceanic quartz. He said it was likely something else that I couldn’t remember. I had a recently broken pair of sunglasses so I took them out and asked if his theory would scratch glass and he said no. Some dyed glass is advertised as cut or faceted amethyst. But in the natural crystal form like this there wont be fakes that look convincing. If you learn the natural structure of the crystal or its "cleavage", you will be able to easily tell its real quartz with little to no other tests needed.

@@stimselner3737 Amber is one of the easier things to test. Amber is fossilized resin so its very light. But regardless it does not melt like resin. Cause alot of friction on the surface by rubbing it with a cloth and if it gets sticky or melts it isnt amber. The most widely used is the hot needle. Heat up a pin or needle and see if it melts and goes in easily. If it does go in easily and melt its fake, if it just goes in a little and smells like pine/tree resin it is real. Lastly if you have a UV light geuine amber florescent! It will glow a murky opaque light blue if its real!
