Tala Habern of course you can sympathise but we won’t be able to fully understand the issues they go through and what they find offensive. For example there was that thing not too long ago about a white girl dressing in a traditional Chinese dress for prom or something I think? and the only people who really found it offensive was other white people, a lot of Chinese people even said they liked it. So I as a black person found none of these offensive and I wouldn’t want someone white for example to come and say we find it offensive, I personally don’t support the black lives matter group either but that’s another conversation all together.
@ZennIRM5 жыл бұрын
@Tala Habern what do u mean by marginalized communities? probably from where u come from. but here, outside ur borders, we're not 'marginalized' anything. We're the majority here. and WE have our own minds thus have our own thoughts and opinions. we may not agree with each other but I bet 100% that if u ask someone in their own country, that they would say that they have more important issues to think of than what other people in other countries think of us. maybe in SEAN that they have stereotypes to their neighboring countries but only bcuz of they're near our countries and tourism (which is more political than 'costumes') .. but people halfway around the world. we don't care much and think that they like to oversexualize things for their own amusement or do whatever. but hey, we don't mind bcuz that's their culture and not ours. we stick to our own beliefs and respect others. but I digress.... if you think that ONE person of race is enough to speak for its majority than, for u to be that person of representative and saying things that u don't know about, should I say that a majority of u think like this and thus have such large egos to think u can say how we feel about it? wow... thanks for the enlightenment. ^^

Perhaps I'm wrong in my interpretation of this virtue signaling video but I have always loved learning about & embracing other cultures so maybe I just oppose the inferred moral of the story; If it is not your history/heritage/ethnicity you may not participate in any part of these other costumes etc dare you possibly offend someone.

This is the only part that bothers me. The costumes i get. Even the rastafarian wig cause it's a religion and that's being disrespectful. But a non costume hair style? Blacks weren't the only ancient race wearing dreads or braids. It's bs. And yes i understand that blacks face discrimination when they wear these hairstyles (granted even whites are gonna face job place discrimination if they dread their hair). No this isn't right. But the answer isn't to ban all other races from styling their hair in a very basic way basically as revenge. Now if it were some complicated, non natural style like a crazy French 17th century pompadour I could understand how a race could claim it if it was historically important to their culture. But you can't claim something hair does naturally or a basic braid that makes hair maintenance easier.

I hate to break it to you, but a lot of things are offensive because us humans, are generally just really offending. So, it's perfectly fine to turn an outfit that has a specific cultural meaning-such as for celebrating your ancestors or mourning and turn it into one of those "sexy", kind of problematic costumes just because it means nothing to you? Plus, the costume isn't even accurate? Most imitated outfits, such as kimonos, were once handmade with care and meaning. Now its mass produced and available for 45 bucks at your local spirit Halloween alongside plastic statues of bleeding corpses and being bought by people who might not even give a Frick about its meaning in the first place?

@Glowingeyes995 жыл бұрын
That's the thing man! People end up living in USA and living in the culture here, that they don't even know the world as big and that there are many cultures out there! That Chinese girl probably doesn't know anything about her Country. But, the fact that she is Chinese she thinks she has a right to say what other cultures can or can't do in the world. She probably grew up in an urban city in the USA. Urban cities in the USA have their own style of culture too. So she lives on the other side of where her blood line comes from. Probably doesn't practice embracing her culture. So she ends up not knowing the difference between the Japanese costume or Chinese.

@@Glowingeyes99 This is a good example of why asian Americans feel supressed in America they cant even say a word or make a mistake . If u are chinese u can talk about asian experiences outside of being from china just just like an aboriginee or a Nigerian can be talk about the black experience or hip hop even if they never met an african american or been to america. Also ur very rude for sayin she doesnt know her own country. China has many different areas where the people dont speak the same language and some don't even consider themself apart of mainland china have u not heard of what's going on in hong Kong of course not. And could u confidently speak in front of a group of people about indigenous american culture and the real name of america other than the European one off the top of ur head ? No,then u dont know shit about your own country either. If u can tell me about the Vietnam war and pearl harbor but cant tell me about the americans that were japanese that were put into internment camps or u cant tell me about the massacre in Tulsa oklahoma where they bombed black americans u dont know your own american history because white is not the equivilant of the word american citizen.

Luckily someone from my family's history documented their journeys into a family book. But even if someone was a drunk Irish or a wannabe samurai for Halloween I'd hardly care. im a first gen Irish american raised in lots of celtic culture. Halloween itself is culture appropriation. It comes from ireland and is a big part of our culture. In rural ireland they still do 2,000 year old celtic Samhain ( Halloween ) traditions like dressing as saints to blend in, turnip lanterns and vegetables instead of candy. This year my family has decided too dress traditionally. And of course there’s always people being like ( There’s no such thing as traditional Halloween costumes ) How Halloween got around the world is a very disturbing story. Just wear what you wanna wear as long as you’re not making fun of it.
