Agree with Awardwin, why in the heck would I buy I house in a HOA neighborhood, I am A homeowner, I take care of mine, and the Code enforcers have never been to my home, Thank God I don't have to deal with that garbage, I can paint my house lime green if I choose too

Folks are very quick to denigrate all HOA's but it seems like misplaced rage.. You don't have to live an HOA.. But if you wish to, there are RULES. For some, that's the attraction.. Neighbors can really suck, and no one wants to deal with them--it's better for some to have an HOA do it, and do it forcefully even obnoxiously.. Noise is an issue for some.

K L they became a thing because people would buy houses then do obnoxious things to the house, park trailers and/or multiple cars running and not, not upkeep their property which dragged down property values of their neighbors and made the neighborhood look trashy. If the hoa is functioning as it should then it’s a good thing but when they get power hungry Nazis then you’ve got a problem that’s just as bad as a trashy neighbor

HAS are a nightmare started by builders to sell more houses. I stopped renting because I didn't want to be under someone else's thumb. They are worse than a landlord that keeps bugging you about every little thing! Plus you get these nasty warning lefthand they can fine you! Sometimes hundreds of dollars! Then you have to hire a lawyer at your expense and they can foreclose on your mortgage! Mine does background checks before you are allowed to move in so they can weed out people that don't think like they do. Be patient and look around for a nice neighborhood without an HOA.

Sound Chaser ...Thanks for resurrecting this comment :) it’s fun to look back at what I was watching two years ago! I was actually looking to buy a home when I made that comment. I ended up buying a home WITHOUT a HOA. I live in a gorgeous neighborhood. Everyone in the neighborhood voluntarily mows the few common areas that exist. That’s it. No HOA. No issues. Plus, there are already laws that pertain to having a junked up yard. The city will be on your butt if you let thing get crazy in your yard. No need for HOAs.

Its the anxiety and stress the self serving board members put people through. Biggest investment for many is the home, than you have corrupt voulenter's many with no business or management experience making bad decisions which end up being very costly because of there incompetence.

Real Manage is really bad. I am selling my home and will never live under a homeowners association ever again. The thing is, I am a 1950s conformist type of person. I blend in. Even I hate HOAs.

Very few really understand what they are getting into. Plus, even if you do read and digest the HOA documents before you move in your HOA can change the rules any time it wants. Plus, very few realize that special assessments can be levied at any time. Your HOA sues someone and loses: you pay.

And then there is a contractors HOA where there is no home owners involved in anything for up to 40+ years, the construction company farms out the management of the HOA in a sweet hand-off deal to a property management company and you have no meetings or contact with anyone. Somehow everyone skips over this headache when describing an HOA.

There is a 400 page book called a prospectus! It outlines the legal rights and power of the HOA. They cannot violate the conditions set forth in the prospectus! To be honest, I am more fearful of people attempting to turn my community into a slum or trailer park, than I am of the HOA!

+Dirt Beard Rule changes has to be done by a vote of the majority of homeowners and some rules cannot be changed, even by a majority vote! Such as they cannot vote to eliminate your vote. I am satisfied with the function of my HOA. The property values are up. People are begging to buy in, and if I didn't like where I live, I would just move!

Might be a good deal for some folks having their neighbours dictating to them but I prefer the way things are only having to deal with municipal bylaws without the added cost of another governing council adding more rules and diminishing my property rights further.

I don't understand the purpose of a homeowners association. We've got one and I didn't joint it. Why pay dues to something just so some people can get up and spout their silly opinions while we pay for the cookies and drinks. What's the point? Ours organizes Easter egg hunts, staring at a fire truck, meeting the police - things like this. I'm retired now, don't go to school or really have to answer to anyone anymore except the laws and rules of our country and the city I live in so why have people like this who can tell you what to do with your property? As long as the house, garage, mini barn and yard are maintain and look nice it's really no one else's business. If they are quiet and law abiding butt out of other people's business. We had a new couple move into a vacant house and some of the homeowners association members can't leave them alone - questions about where they are from, why they move so often and so on. In the meantime we've got a petty crime problem but the HOA never addresses this problem. How does staring at a fire truck improve the quality of our lives?

I think my HOA is the only good one out there. Really cheap and they keep the area nice looking. They even through a BBQ two years ago and it was wonderful. A lot of these other HOA's are awful though.

I have to sell and get away from. My HOA. They keep raising the HOA fee every year, they send me warning letters about the height and/or time that I cut my grass, how I park my cars, won't let me put up a fence, will not allow me to put a storage she in my back yard, will not allow me to replace my front door etc. They fine you for the slightest infraction, they don't seem to do anything but send out warning letters or charge fines for things a normal homeowner wants to do. I can't put up a swing set for my kids and I can't put my house number in a prominent place because all the houses are cookie cutter and have to look exactly the same. They are not on the side of the residents but was formed to help the builder sell more homes. No more HOAs for me. I've had it!

I live in a condo Assoc. Where the members are getting older. We have had a self governing board. We are thinking of voting to go to a management company. We are in Alabama. It is my understanding that the Association must maintain at least a four member board by state law. The President of the association wants to go to a three member board. We need a management company but because of this controlling president, it may get voted down.

In my opinion, HOA's are pointless even when they work. (which they rarely do) People need to just mind their fucking business and stop caring that Jim's shrub is taller than two and a half feet or Rob's son keeps leaving his big wheel on the sidewalk.. Sure it's an "eyesore," but no one is getting hurt therefor, no problem. Of course, if Jim was in his garage creating napalm to dump on unwanted ant hills, then that would be a different story altogether.

Our HOA isn't too bad. The fees do cover the pools playgrounds and walking trails. We have bike lanes and sidewalks that are maintained and for a sherif to patrol regularly. The only downside is if you forget to pull your cans in by the next morning you get a fine and yoy cant leave your cars parked overnight in the street. But overall I cant complain too much.
