Peter Jacobsen is truly in a league of his own. He's a hospitality savant, a man whose standards are so high that literally no current amenities can meet his nearly-boundless (but paradoxically completely reasonable) needs. Do not hate Mr. Jacobsen. Envy him. Emulate him. However impossible, strive to become him. Understand you can never fulfill YOUR OWN potential until you expect -- nay, demand -- 8-star service.

During the pandemic I was able to stay in at two 5-star hotels due to the prices being lowered as a result of lack of travelers and it was AMAZING. The grounds were so large the staff used bicycles to get around and the bathtub was carved out of large piece of granite. Another one I had my own private pool in addition to the tub being carved out of a piece of granite. It was a truly amazing and indelible experience that's worth saving up for.

Absolutely it’s so easy to tell 4 vs 5 For my Mexico City stay I stayed at the JW Marriott , beautiful lobby pool and modern rooms with friendly staff. No complaints at all. However my stay at the Sofitel Reforma was special. They made the whole experience effortless. They even brought in a Staff member from a local clinic to administer my covid test in the hotel. Anyone who’s stays in Mexico City and has a more liberal budget should stay at the Sofitel.

I think stars indicate expectations and user reviews show if those expectations are actually met or not. You can be incredibly satisfied with the amenities and service of a 2 star hotel, but you’d be horribly disappointed if you received the same care at a 5 star hotel. Also, as a rough indicator, I view 1-3 star hotels as places where you go to stay, whereas 4-5 star hotels are destinations in their own right.

I do not know where u re from, but here in Europe government officials give rating and the humber of stars is usually on a golden plague on a wall next to the entrance. Only those ratings are true, nobody cares how many stars gives a booking platform like booking

Eco-friendly is media gaslighting. If anything, eco-friendly for a hotel is a turn-off because it means low flow showerheads, less towels, and overall less amenities and luxury.

The mess of having to invent 7 stars is because people don't know how to use a scaling system. You're supposed to rate the best of the best as 5 stars but people rate average hotels as 5 stars. So if the scale is broken they need to add more stars, but that is just a temporary patchwork solution. As long as people don't know how to use the scale, you're gonna have to keep adding 8 stars and 9 stars in the future.

The problem with standardized rating is that it just shows you the facilities. For example you can find extremely high end hotels/resorts in muslim countries that arent ranked 5 Star because they dont serve alcohol. If only there was a system that also ranks the quality of the services and facilities

For my family is mostly the privacy and peace of mind that 4 and 5 star hotels offer, they treat you better, there’s more attention, if you have kids they tend to go out of their way to assist you and make sure the experience is worth the money.

Not true for 4 stars in Europe here - i have noticed very often they re more like 3 stars. For instance just recently stayed in 4 stars in Lisbon centre - that was not even near the 4 stars, and in spring stayed in 4 stars in Bolsano - that was more like 5 stars with amenities and the size of rooms and service. So usually it is hit or miss with 4 stars

Although there are different validations from different countries, I still bear in mind that the government shouldn't make any valuation on any services, let them be international ones - The Forbes Travel Guide. And I also like the idea that the distinction between 4 and 5 stars is the feeling of customers. It not only depends on immaculate services and design, but it rather has to hover around people's extra feelings. 5-star hotels always strive for excellence, and they attract tourists by their exclusive taste of accommodating.

When I travel I don't care about those stars. I look up what are the hotel's amenities are or what they offer, if it's something I need or want and of course the price. If it's too expensive for me then its a pass and if I think its affordable and within budget I go for it. Online reviews are also important to me.

So basically the ratings system is outdated but the legacy ratings agencies refuse to recognize this and criticize customer review platforms because the latter could mean the end of the former. There’s a middle ground that is not being exploited, combining the old school rating system with online reviews to create a single global standard, and the sooner that happens the better served travelers and hoteliers will be.

All bout business. Forbes sells own hotel equipments to hotel, sucks as in-room dinning cart. If hotel buys it . Most likely hotel doesn’t get negative point when inspection. Hotel needs to pay to Forbes to come inspection and if pay more, you get training class from Forbes. But still NOT EASY TO GET STAR! That’s what I heard from hotel workers..
