Nice for you to mention that there is turntables with preamps and that they only need powered speakers to work. Mentioned this on one of your videos actually. I bought the: AT-LP5 a while ago and they are connected to my Klipsch R15PM speakers and the sound is awesome. AT-LP5 bypasses the preamp so i have it set to phono and use my Klipsch R15PM's preamp.

One has to consider the type of phono cartridge being used as well. If you're upgrading from a Moving Magnet (MM) to Moving Coil (MC) type, the output voltage of the MC can be roughly an order of magnitude less than a MM type. This may or may not be sufficient for your existing equipment. A separate phono preamp for MC cartridges will then be required that is designed for these low output signals. This then gets wired into a LINE/AUX signal input in the original preamp.

And you should NEVER have the turntable's switch set to LINE while connected to your amplifier/reciever's PHONO input! It is the same as plugging a CD player into the PHONO input and you may blow your equipment!

My buddy had this problem and ended up just getting a new receiver. Turns out his preamp that was built in to the receiver went bad one way or another and it was just being bypassed. There was no switch or anything so he sold it to a friend with a pre amp and turntable who likes it very much now

You forgot a major problem as well. Many people are using vintage turn tables. Many of them had a different type of cartridge. There are magnetic and ceramic cartridges available. And your pre-amp needs to be for one or the other. The all in one RadioShack pre-amps that do both with a flip of the switch are not that good, and vintage as well.

I actually have the reverse problem. I have a stereo that has instructions that say to start off with the volume in the middle, well I can't do that, I'd either blow out windows or annoy neighbors. I have to set it to the second to third mark on the volume control and it is still pretty loud and clear. Oh did I fail to mention its an old Capehart console stereo cabinet from 1975 all original parts. Its about as old as I am.

Do you know what you call a "preamp" is called a "phonostage" in many other parts of the world, where preamps may not have a phonostage. Another issue you don't mention is MM and MC cartridges, and MC need a greater phonostage.

another consideration. I bought a receiver with a phono input. When I played records, I noticed that compared to the other out put sources that the phono played much lower (than say, cd's or even the tuner). I have since discovered that the built in pre amps in some receivers are simply not that amp'd. I bought an exernal phono pre amp and now have my turntable plugged into the corresponding line input (not the phono input) and low and behold, not only are my records playing louder but sounding better.

Hi vinyl eyezz, thanks for all your audio suggestions. I have tried many different combinations without success. I have a Sony record player with two switches, phone/line and gain (low, med, high). It is connected to my reciever in Aux port which is a Onkyo TX-SR393. My speakers are polk audio 150W. The setup: Record player in in Aux port Line is selected Gain is med. Record player is right next to reciever. Left speaker is 2 ft from Record player. I tried moving father apart did not correct issue. The ussue: When the volume on the reciever is below 70, no issues, but the sound seems too low for 70. At 70 and above, I get the humming. The Record player is fairly new so I do not think this is due to the stylus. I think the signal from the Record player is not enough and maybe a preamp is needed. This same Record player worked great at high volume when it was connected to a Bose system. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Todd

The opposite happened to me when I first hooked my Audio Technica LP-120 to a vintage receiver amp. I didn't realize that the turntable has a phono pre-amp built in. I plugged it straight into the phono input of the receivier, and when I turned the receivier on, the result was very loud. The amp had its own pre-amp, so the line signal coming from the turntable was too much. Thank goodness nothing got hurt.

No, you don't use a turntable that has no internal preamp with active speakers. Older vintage tables had no preamp so your preamps \ receivers had a built in phono preamp. Active speakers do not have a phono input.

Beginner here. I have a victrrola vta-65. It has internal speakers so I'm guessing it has preamp? But I have speakers plugged in via stereo system through rca. No phono/line switch visible though. But the front has a knob with Blu tooth/phono/radio. When i play through stereo with external speakers the phono speakers play as well. Although I can simply turn the internal speakers all the way down on the knob it doesn't completely mute it. Not too much of an issue since the stereo speakers usually make the audio from the player itself I'm wondering if theres something I'm missing here.

i have a classic phone with built-in speakers and my problem is not having low volume. my turntable is wayyy too loud! even at the lowest setting i can hear the music clearly everywhere in my flat, i can't sit in the room that has my turntable because it's so loud that i cant even hear myself and causes headache. my turntable model is lenco tt-34, since it has built-in speakers i dont have any of these other components. it doesnt have aux connection and there is no socket that i can connect headphones. it only has usb connection to record the vinyl. i am really new to vinyl thing and i bought a suitcase record player as a gift to my mom, since it didnt work properly i changed it with lenco tt-34. i dont really know maybe i'm being too dramatic about the volume, maybe i will get used to it. but is there anything that i can do? my mom likes a retro look on record players and she is only here for nostalgia. plus i'm on tight budget, i don't think she'll like all the modern components of record player setup. not seeking to be a professional in this field but i'd like to know if there's an option about lowering the volume. it doesnt have to be a technical solution, i'd appreciate sound isolation tips too. since i changed it with another model i dont really think i have the energy and the money to change it again, all answers are much appreciated, thanks guys.

Came here looking for some advice on increasing the output on my mm cartridge. With Other inputs, my integrated amp can be set at 1 or 2 for comfortable listening, but when the 'Phono' (pronounced FO NO) selected volume has to be turned up to 3 or 4... So, Preamp works, but just not 'loud' enough to match other inputs. Otherwise, yeah. didn't need any advice provided in this video as I lived through albums, tapes, CD's, and now MP3s.

My upgraded Sherwood turntable having a beast sound! However, i had two 7" lathe cuts that sounds on too low volume...so..it wasnt a setup mistake. That was exactly the low volume of a record. So that means the low volume can be an act of badly recordered product - but its easy to test your setup with other vinyls to make sure that was exactly that type of problem.

I finally got around to hooking up my ageing Project Debut II to my PC, so I could make copies of my precious vinyl that I could play in the car, or around the house through the wi-fi speaker setup (yeah, yeah, I know, sound quality and all that, but I have to take account of WAF and the separates system I used to have was just too much tech for her to bear!) I've hooked it up to a Project pre-amp, with the switch set to match the stylus type, which then feeds into a USB ADC and then onto my computer. The sound coming through is a little below what I'd like, but I can live with that as I can use Audacity to bump up the level a little to give me what I need. It's not ideal, though, as I'm never entirely sure that such post-processing isn't going to affect the quality. I'm fairly sure it's the ADC causing the problem, but I'm trying to do this with the tech I already have at my disposal.

Good job again, Jarrett!!! I have a question, both for you and the Vinyl Eyezz community: I have an Audio Technica LP 120 TT like the one in your video, and I absolutely love it!! However, lately I've been thinking that I would like to find an automatic direct drive turntable--but all the ones I can find are WAY too expensive, costing thousands of dollars. Do you or anyone else know of a good, reasonably priced direct drive TT? I should probably emphasize direct drive, because I'm not a fan of belt drive TTs. Any help you could give would be appreciated--thanks!!!

Hm, we seem to have really low volume on our two record players compared to playing CD's on the same system. My dad is knowledgeable about the sound set up, so there shouldn't be anything wrong there. The issue is mostly that we have to REALLY crank up the volume to listen to vinyl (and we tend to list to loud music, so maybe this wouldn't be an issue for everyone) but we have to set it WAY louder than CD's or radio. Which means if we forget to lower the volume and we play a CD, it's way too loud. Is this a normal thing or can this also be fixed somehow?

The only thing different was that i had moved it to it's permanent home in my living room. When i went to play a record i didn't realize i had put the plastic cap back on the needle. I sort of had this happen to me when I bought my first turntable. I wasn't ignorant of the existence of pre amps it's just that I set up my turn table looked around it saw no pre amp switch and since I knew it was built in I figured it was just already on. After checking the manual it turned out that switch was underneath the platter. It happened with one of my Project record player as well but that had nothing to do with the preamp being on or off, it just broke after a month or maybe less so the store gave me new one.

Why don't you have to use powered speakers or an amplifier when you have a receiver? You said the receiver has preamp, but where's the amp?

The receiver is the amplifier, all receivers are a type of amplifier :)

"Receiver" is simply the name for a combined tuner and amplifier.

I've had my LP120XUSB for almost 5 months now and I'm only now just seeing this! I thought the internal preamp was already switched on, I was probably getting mixed messages from Audio Technica's video tutorial

My first turntable was the Audio Technica LP 60 with a pair of Insignia Bookshelf Powered Speaker (pretty cheap right?). I noticed that the volume was loud enough where you could enjoy the music, but it want loud enough. I did some research and ended up replacing the speakers with the Klipsch R15 non powered speakers and a receiver. BOOM! the difference is night and day, I cant get over 75-80 volume level without blowing my head up lol. So yeah, even tough I technically had all four components, the volume wasn't that loud. just listenable, I think it had something to do with the powered speakers not being that powerful.

Thank you, man. I thought my record player was broken and was about to pitch a perfectly good player. My issue was the latter. You're right. That was stupid easy.

Just subbed! I have this low volume issue. Running an AT-LP120XBT connected to a Sony STR-DN1080. For some reason when I listen to vinyl I have to turn the volume up a bit more to get an equal amount of sound compared to listening to Spotify via wifi. Any ideas?

Hey Jarrett!... I have a question... I have an Audio Technica ATLP60XHP pugged to a pair of Thonet & Vander Hoch speakers (using the turntable built-in preamp)... But I notice that when I use the speakers with my phone plugged in, the speakers sound louder than the turntable (playing the exact same song)... Maybe the preamp is not powerful enough?... Thanks man, I appreciate if you can answer my question. Great Channel!

My vyinil gear setup is a Sanyo TP1024, plugged directly into a Sony RX-99 and the latter to the speakers. Do I need a preamp to turn up the sound?

I just bought the Pro -Ject & the volume was way too low on my Technics amp. Turns out the needle wasn't inserted all the way in. I than cranked The whole Power Slave LP! Sounds amazingly beefy & bassy! Never going back to CDs!

Still don't know wtf is wrong with my set-up. I know I triple checked if my receiver had a phono input (it doesn't) and so I set the switch on my TT accordingly. I have the TT connected to the receiver that is my main home theater receiver and everything else sounds fine at a reasonable volume (between 13 and 19 depending on the ambient noise in the living room. But with the TT I have to turn it up to 37 if I really want to *feel* it (after listening some more, I've found that 31-33 is probably just fine, but still that's a lot louder than everything else. Anyway, I just ordered the Pro-Ject Phono Box DC based on your recommendation in another video, so we'll see how that goes... AT-LP120X / Ortofon 2M Red -> Onkyo TX-NR616 -> Pioneer SP-FS52 Andrew Jones design floor-standing speakers

I turned my turntable to Line while a record played to see how the volume increased and I almost had a heart attack because it was so loud it scared the crap out of me!
